Sogdian Texts

This paper aims to discuss the philological ‘mechanisms’ used in translating Christian texts into Sogdian. In particular, it focuses on how different Christian theological and ecclesiological vocabularies were translated from Syriac. Particular emphasis will be given to showing how the Sogdian Church linguistically contextualized its theological and ecclesiological concepts. Section 1 offers introductory review of the composition of the texts focusing on the physical organization and philological structure of the texts, including short survey of research history on individual vocabularies. Section 2 discusses the translation mechanisms observed in structure of the texts. Section 3 provides examples of the 'Christian' vocabularies related to a selected major theological ecclesiological concepts and expressions.

This paper, published in two parts, presents the results of joint work on several Sogdian fragments recently discovered in the Serindia Collection of the Institute of Oriental Manuscripts of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IOM, RAS), written on scrolls with Chinese texts on the back, as is the case with most similar texts. Study of the Chinese texts on the other side has made it possible to identify them as belonging to the commonly-occurring Buddhist text of the Lotus Sutra (Saddharmapuṇḍarīka-sūtra), and to determine the order of all the fragments. This enabled us to join the new Sogdian fragments with some previously published ones, to determine their order and thus get a better understanding of the Sogdian texts of these fragments. It is also possible to note some features of the use of Chinese scrolls by the Sogdian Manichaeans (the cutting of the scrolls into separate sheets, the possible gluing of the sheets in a different order, etc.).

Sogdština byla jedním z významných jazyků středoasijské trasy Hedvábné stezky. V tomto jazyce se zachovala celá řada různorodých textů – osobní korespondence, diplomatická pošta, smlouvy různého charakteru, účetní záznamy, překlady náboženských textů tří náboženství (buddhismu, manicheismu, křesťanství), historiografie (např. texty týkající se nejstarších dějin Turkitů), pohádky, slovníčky a mnoho dalších. Význam sogdštiny je podpořen i faktem, že známe blízce příbuzný jazyk, který se dochoval do dnešních dnů – jaghnóbštinu. Jaghnóbština v řadě případů napomáhá k hlubšímu poznání sogdštiny a jejích dialektů.
Náplní přednášek bude postupný výklad základních gramatických pravidel sogdského jazyka, výklad gramatiky a historického vývoje sogdštiny. Studium gramatiky bude částečně založeno na učebnici sogdštiny, částečně pak na četbě vybraných autentických sogdských textů (krátké texty z hory Mugh v Tádžikistánu, jednodušší buddhistické texty, případně četba vokalizovaných křesťanských textů).

The paper gives a survey of the codicological variety of the Sogdian manuscripts in Manichaean script of the Berlin Turfan Collection. Book formats, paper/silk/leather type, re-used paper, scripts and plurilingualism will be examined and commented upon.

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate the role of Sogdian Buddhist monks in the
spread of Buddhism in southern China. Sogdians played an important role in
promoting Buddhism because they knew Chinese and Hindi, and they were not as
merchants who only carried goods but also they were carriers of religions such as
Manichaeism, Zoroastrianism, Christianity, and Buddhism. Based on available
sources, such as biographies of Sogdian monks, tomb inscriptions, and Sogdian
Buddhist manuscripts in Turfan and Dunhuang, this study shows how they, in their
role as religious messengers, spread Buddhism in southern China during the seventh
to tenth centuries AD.[in Persian]

Středoasijský Turkestán by se dodnes dal nazvat Babylonem jazyků – nejinak tomu bylo i v předislámském období. Zejména z oblasti Turfanské oázy v Ujghuristánu pochází celá řada textů v různých jazycích (íránských, indoárských, tocharských, turkických, sinotibetských aj.), tyto jazyky však vykazují zvláštní rys – jsou v různém kontextu zaznamenány různým písmem. Jazyková i písmová rozmanitost byla spojena zejména s administrativou a náboženstvím, významnou roli však hrají i další faktory. Fakt, že jeden jazyk je doložen v zápisu v několika různých grafických systémech pomáhá k hlubšímu poznání vývoje těchto mnohdy již mrtvých jazyků – příkladem může být čínština zapsaná pomocí sogdské adaptace aramejské abecedy, která vrhá světlo na podobu čínštiny před více než tisíci lety.
