Sexuality in Islamic History

One of the more controversial topics in the modern study of Islam, concerns the relative status of women and the treatment and civil rights of non-Islamic minorities within the context of Islamic law.  This qualitative research project will look at a very narrow topic within Islamic law which addresses both issues.  The aim of the research is to bring to light Muhammad’s teaching and practice on this subject through reading and analysis of primary source document references to al ‘azl and its rejection in the proper treatment of non-Muslim captive women.  If religious law (Sharia) is to change in the modern context, it must surely begin with the more problematical pronouncements found in the foundational texts of Islam.  The purpose of this study is to illustrate one such practice while attempting to answer the question, how is this aspect of the Prophet’s behavior (Sunnah) to be interpreted in the modern age?  My hope is that this study will benefit liberal Muslims who seek to reform Islam for the 21st century context.  It is not my purpose to offend any Muslim readers by this project, but to illustrate that all religions must find a way to deal with their darker texts in a globalized world where universal human rights across cultural and religious barriers will become the  most important issue of the 21st century.

The purpose of this essay was to identify the advantages of virginity and chastity for health as well as the negative effects of lack thereof. These harms, which can extend to familial and larger social consequences, have been examined from a biological and psychological perspective. The topic is supported by gynecological, biological, and psychological studies. If there isn't any specific research to support a certain inference, then it has been addressed using widely accepted scientific concepts. The essay covered the advantages of virginity and chastity, including how they can deepen relationships via fidelity and committed bonds, improve first sex experiences through novelty, lubricate and tighten the vagina, and protect against illnesses. However, relationships have suffered as a result of several partners or polyamorous relationships, vaginal laxity, and STDs. The practice of prostitution was also discussed, along with the social, psychological, and health costs associated with it. The study concluded that laws should be adopted to prohibit and punish extramarital sex rather than prioritizing the proposal of temporary band-aids to these issues, such as the promotion of condoms, STD treatments, etc., in order to protect individual morality, familial relationships, society from exploiting women, and health laws.

“Carnivalesque” is perhaps the best, if not the only way to describe what was going on at the Bab al-Saghir Cemetery that hot summer afternoon in 2008.  In front of the graves of the Prophet’s wives, Shi‘i pilgrims could buy Viagra, sex-enhancement creams, and massage oils.  Sexual mores were normally strictly guarded in Syria and medicines were usually available only at pharmacies.  Yet, there in one of the most historically and religiously significant cemeteries in Damascus, makeshift vendors sold an array of sex-related items.  In order to analyze this phenomenon, this article draws on Mikhail Bakhtin’s notion of the “carnivalesque.”  First, it provides a short background of Twelver Shi‘ism in Syria and explains how Shi‘i religious tourism encouraged the development of black markets.  Then, it examines how Shi‘i pilgrimage, which occurred all year around, but peaked during Muharram, fostered an attitude that liberated Shi‘is from prevalent social norms and emphasized “grotesque” imagery and practices, including blood, death, and sex.  In short, it follows Michael Taussig’s call for anthropologists to attend to the transgressive aspects of religious ritual.

Probleme contemporane socio-politice grave precum fanatismul de factură religioasă sau atee, islamofobia, excesiv uzitata ciocnire a civilizațiilor, analize crude și neconcesive ale statutului femeilor musulmane și occidentale, pasionate disecări multistratificate ale hedonismului și hipertrofierii raționalismului european, introspecții needulcorate și lucide sunt redate într-un stil uneori grav, filosofic, alteori plin de umor și duritate, țesând o scriitură vie, autentică, intensă, fascinantă, care se citește pe nerăsuflate. Romanul este complex și probabil fiecare cititor se va regăsi privilegiat în cel puțin una dintre temele abordate – libertatea, frumusețea, iubirea, îmbătrânirea. Eu îmi asum propria subiectivitate și privilegiul recenzoarei și voi discuta doar despre două dimensiuni umane fundamentale în jurul cărora îmi par a gravita celelalte teme: erosul și credința, unite prin dubla lor înrădăcinare în inimă.
Romanul vorbește din inimă, despre inimă, despre adevărurile sale monadice, simple, nediscursive, despre ceea ce rămâne din credință și iubire dacă lăsăm între paranteze mare parte din condiționările și contingențele socio-culturale și istorice care determină cunoașterea Celuilalt. Aici Celălalt apare sub forma unui bărbat musulman, musulmanul funcționând astăzi ca simbol al alterității absolute, al străinului periculos care, prin îndrăgostire, pune în criză tot ceea ce credeam anterior că am cunoaște despre el. Alina, povestitoarea, se îndrăgostește fulminant de acest personaj masculin enigmatic care refuză să comunice verbal semnificativ, pentru că el dorește „să o trăiascăˮ, nu să o cunoască. Minimalismul discursiv nu le mai permite minții celor doi să brodeze scenarii, supoziții și așteptări – pasibile de a fi veridice și, inerent, capabile de a te face să te disipezi în ele – legate de celălalt partener, iar cuplul își trăiește simplu, atipic și primordial relația mai mult în trup. Măștile sociale și veșmintele culturale aleatorii cad, nu-și mai au rostul. Îmbrățișarea trupului, a naturii și naturalului într-o societate occidentală încă schizoidă, simultan pornografică și somatofobă, coincide cu o întregire a ființei și o redescoperire de sine care transgresează în punerea în discuție a divinității. Ce mai e iubirea în acest context? Abandon absolut, renunțare la ego, trup care se deschide înspre conștiință și credință, extaz care coboară în trup și te unifică interior. În cazul Alinei, e implicit recuperată feminist, dar original femeia din ea și feminitatea. Ce rămâne din credință în cazul musulmanului Mehr și creștinei Ketevan? O recunoaștere trăită a unicității divinității, divinitate care nu poate fi decât iubire și care este regăsită atât în paginile cărților sfinte, cât și „în cântecul valurilor, de ce nu?”. O afirmație de altfel cât se poate de coranică, un leitmotiv al textului islamic fiind acela al semnelor divine prezente deopotrivă în Carte și în univers

This course aims to survey Classical Arabic literatures in poetic, novelistic, critical, autobiographical, and travel genres. Readings expose students to samples of original translated texts from the creative heritage of Arab-Islamic civilization. Creativity is defined as the venture of resolving cultural problems within available intellectual, cosmological, and literary means. Selections from the following will be appreciated, analyzed, and discussed:

En este artículo analizamos el uso de los afrodisíacos en una de las obras más completas redactas durante la Edad Media islámica, es decir, El manifiesto de los secretos del coito del damasceno al-Šayzarī (s. XIII). El objetivo principal de este trabajo es conectar la importante labor que desempeña el factor culinario y la higiene sexual en la sociedad islámica con las artes amatorias, recogidas estas en el género erótico árabe e islámico de 'ilm al-bāh. Este autor deja en nuestras manos un auténtico compendio sobre las artes médico-amatorias, recopilando, ex profeso, una rica erudición de autores precedentes y contemporáneos como Galeno, al-Ṭabarī, al-Rāzī, Avicena al-Ṭūsī o al-Tīfāšī.

How have they evolved as they return to the mainstream? What can we continue to learn about sexuality and gender from Muslim artists? This paper analyzes the judicial practice regarding homosexuality in two countries, Egypt and Lebanon. There is not a law against homosexuality in Egypt, but male homosexuals are punished according to art. 9.c of law 10/1961, which criminalizes the habitual practice of male prostitution. On the contrary in Lebanon, art. 534 of the Penal Code clearly criminalizes «against nature sexual acts», though, homosexuality is proceeding toward a slow but observable normalization in this country. It is clear that still homosexual acts are criminalized in both countries, but the approach is quite different: while in Egypt all the actors in the legal field adhere to a dominant discourse which focuses on the assumption that homosexuality is a perversion, in Lebanon competitive discourses are emerging, thanks to Ḥelem and other groups whose members define themselves as homosexuals and have a human-rights approach, contributing to transform the discourse on homosexuality in the Middle East.
