Self-Perception and Impression of Others

Issues of subjectivity and consciousness are dealt within very different waysw in the analytic tradition and in the idealistic phenomenological tradition central to continental philosophy. This book brings together analytically inspired philosophers working on the contintent with English-speaking philosophers to address specific issues regarding subjectivity and consciousness. The issues range from acquaintance and immediacy in perception and apperception, to the role of agency in bodily 'mine-ness', to self-determination (Selbstbestimmung) through (free) action. Thus involving philosophers of different traditons should yield a deeper vision of consciousness and subjectivity; oe relating the mind not only to nature, or to first-perso authority in linguistic creatures Questions which, in the analytic tradition, are sometimes treated as exhausting the topic but also to many other aspects of mind's understanding of itself in ways which disrupt classic inner/outer boundaries.

Reflecting on European colonialism in 1950 - at a time when discussions about what we now know as the European Union emerged in western Europe, Aimé Césaire wrote, . . . Europe is morally, spiritually indefensible. This idea is fairly commonplace in much of the post-colonial world and it has some purchase within certain academic and intellectual circles elsewhere. And yet, in the process of denouncing the widely noted presence of racism in Hungary, thirty-six leading Hungarian intellectuals have, in a recent public document, felt compelled to thank France, and through France, a generic, trans-historical notion of Europe, for what they saw as the latter's profound, longue-durée goodness. It is partly my concern for the economic hardship, political marginality, cultural discrimination, and social exclusion faced by the Romanies of eastern Europe and partly the precision with which the Letter articulates the topos of west European moral superiority - a central pattern of European identity discourse - that prompts me to raise the following initial questions: How is it possible to denounce racism by referring to Europe, especially western Europe, the main historic source and promoter of racism as we know it today? What purpose does the genre of the open letter serve and how does it function? How does the signatories' implicit project of geopolitical self-positioning relate to the theme of the West as an object to be emulated, long dominant in the modern history of east-central European ideas of emancipation?

The contribution focuses on the version of Stoic theory of appropriation provided by the Stoic Hierocles in II century AD. Though Hierocles' theory of appropriation is fundamentally consistent to the orthodox one, it is also somehow interweaven with Peripatetic ethical and psychologal themes

The purpose of the study was to examine the effect of sport skill acquisition in two selected sports on the self- perception of in-school adolescence. Experimental research design was adopted for the study. The Physical Self-Perception Profile (PSPP, Fox & Corbin, 1989) was administered on 160 participants who took part in an eight week structured exercise intervention using the pre-post- test method. The mean and standard deviation of the pre and post treatment PSPP score of male and female participants in basketball, badminton and control were revealed (= 96.50 ± 12.7;  = 80.58 ± 17.49;  = 73.83 ± 17.84) and (=100.68 ± 8.94;  = 95.71 ± 7.15;  = 73.74 ± 17.89), respectively. A Two Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was used to test for difference among means the result revealed significant effect in the pre and post treatment sport groups (<0.05). To determine the location of the significant effect, a post hoc analysis was carried out (<0.05). The study concluded that basketball and badminton skill training had a significant effect on the self-perception of participants irrespective of sex and age

This paper first focuses on the basic reasons of intolerance; and then maintains that classical notion of toleration common since John Locke and Immanuel Kant is insufficient for overcoming obstacles of living together with a peace and harmony in the present conditions of a multicultural European Society based on liberal democratic tradition in politics. The paper second tries to show that some philosophical justifications for toleration as indulgence, forbearance or endurance made by Hobbes, Bayle and Locke are also inconvenience and weak foundations for building and protecting a multicultural society as well as for preventing conflicts of civilizations. From this point, the paper third suggests that we need a notion of toleration based on the idea of justice and respect to other; and explicates it in details. The Paper fourth pays attention to the role and place of Islam and Turk identity in the making of multicultural Europe and points out some logical fallacies and discourse mistakes by some Europeans. The paper finally ends with a proposal that we should enforce the mutual and reasonable tolerance as rational agents who can see the world from other's perspective for a well-based multicultural society.

The research on international organizations (IOs) continues to be dominated by two distinctions: on the one hand, the distinction between rational choice and social construction; on the other hand, the distinction between IOs as arenas for states and IOs as actors in their own right. In this article I argue that these two distinctions structure not only our theoretical debates on IOs, but also what our theories aspire to explain: political conflicts in IOs. Through an in-depth study of two debates during a conflict in the world food organizations, I show how the distinctions were used to create lines of dispute. I conclude that research that itself establishes the distinctions on a theoretical basis is unable to grasp the logic of conflict in IOs, since it fixes theoretically what is contested politically. What is called for is instead a practice-theoretical approach.

This paper aims to establish a direct link between media content and its impact on the perception of physical attributes of a person. It explores the source of origin for the perception that surrounds body types that are viewed as acceptable. It highlights the psychological impact that people experience when their understanding of body image is distorted and their perception of self and/or others is modulated.

The present study examined the perceptions of cellular phone users and nonusers on issues relating to vehicle control and driver distraction. Participants were asked if they own a cellular phone; if so, how much they use it; and their beliefs regarding cellular phone use while driving, including actions involving the use of cellular phones which could potentially cause vehicular accidents and the need for laws. A total of 330 individuals participated; 72% owned a cellular phone. The results indi- cate that nonusers of cellular phones believed more strongly than users that cellular phone use while driving negatively affects driving performance and that talking on the cellular phone could potentially cause an accident, and they also had a greater preference for new laws limiting such acts. Cellular phone users, more than non- users, preferred no laws limiting cellular phone use and believed more strongly that other people driving while using a cellular phone were more dangerous than them- selves doing the same. Implications of these results are discussed. Actual or potential applications of this research include interventions that limit driver distractibility.

Abstract:

Consistent with the authors' suggestions for research on extensions beyond the self (e.g., to joint attention and group-related processes), we offer the hypothesis that the Self-Attention Network may facilitate attention to any person who is construed as similar to the self along key dimensions. On the basis of existing literature and our recent findings, we focus on the dimensions of personal relevance and valence. Further research on how these dimensions mediate attention to self and others has the potential to unify separate lines of research on the neural representation of self and others (i.e., social cognition).
