Studies on microbial characterization of cold-smoked salmon and salmon trout during cold storage were performed on samples available in the Portuguese market. Samples were also classified microbiologically according to guidelines for ready-to-eat (RTE) products. Further investigations on sample variability and microbial abilities to produce tyramine and histamine were also performed. The coefficient of variation for viable counts of different groups of microorganisms of samples collected at retail market point was high in the first 2 wk of storage, mainly in the Enterobacteriaceae group and aerobic plate count (APC), suggesting that microbiological characteristics of samples were different in numbers, even within the same batch from the same producer. The overall goal for this review is: To gather and synthesize project-specific information to educate Interagency Ecological Program (IEP) management about its fish monitoring program elements in California's San Francisco Bay-Delta and how the project products are used, and to help managers in making decisions about longer-term program priorities and resource commitments. Unlike recent reviews of program elements, no new technical analyses were completed as part of this review. Instead, this review relies on information obtained from completion of a detailed questionnaire (see Appendices A and B) with the assumption that much of the requested information already exists in a readily available form. This report serves to help IEP meet future planning and implementation challenges. It is does not identify specific program cuts nor provide technical review of sampling design nor establish program priorities. Movement of nutrients across ecosystem boundaries can have important effects on food webs and population dynamics. An example from the North Pacific Rim is the connection between productive marine ecosystems and freshwaters driven by annual spawning migrations of Pacific salmon (Oncorhynchus spp). While a growing body of research has highlighted the importance of both pulsed nutrient subsidies and disturbance by spawning salmon, their effects on population densities of vertebrate consumers have rarely been tested, especially across streams spanning a wide range of natural variation in salmon densities and habitat characteristics. The risk of infanticide may alter foraging decisions made by females, which otherwise would have been based on nutritional requirements and forage quality and availability. In systems where meat resources are spatially aggregated in late summer and fall, female brown bears ( Ursus arctos) would be faced with a trade-off situation. The need of reproductive females to accumulate adequate fat stores would likely result in a decision to frequent salmon streams and consume the protein- and lipid-rich spawning salmon. In contrast, aggregations of bears along salmon streams would create conditions of high risk of infanticide. We investigated consumption of salmon by brown bears on Admiralty and Chichagof Islands in Southeast Alaska from 1982 to 2000 using stable isotope analysis and radiotelemetry. While nearly all males (22 of 23) consumed relatively large amounts of salmon (i.e., >10% relative contribution to seasonal diet), not all females ( n =56) did so. Five of 26 females for which we had reproductive data, occupied home ranges that had no access to salmon and thus did not consume salmon when they were mated or accompanied by young. Of females that had access to salmon streams ( n =21), all mated individuals ( n =16) had δ15N values indicative of salmon consumption. In contrast, 4 out of 16 females with cubs avoided consuming salmon altogether, and of the other 12, 3 consumed less salmon than they did when they were mated. For 11 of 21 females with access to salmon streams we had data encompassing both reproductive states. Five of those altered foraging strategies and exhibited significantly lower values of δ15N when accompanied by young than when mated, while 6 did not. Radiotelemetry data indicated that females with spring cubs were found, on average, further away from streams during the spawning season compared with females with no young, but both did not differ from males and females with yearlings and 2-year-olds. Females with young that avoided salmon streams were significantly lighter indicating that female choice to avoid consumption of salmon carries a cost that may translate to lower female or cub survivorship. The role of the social hierarchy of males and females, mating history, and paternity in affecting the risk of infanticide and foraging decisions of female brown bears merit further investigation.

Multilocus microsatellite genotypes were used to infer kinship and relatedness in two species of Pacific salmon from three populations in Washington State. Even in the absence of direct genetic data from parents, clustering of individuals according to allele sharing and reconstruction of parental genotypes allowed resolution of full- and half-sib relationships among 135 chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) sampled as preemergent juveniles from 14 redds in the Dungeness River. Inferred reproductive behaviors included single-pair matings, polyandry in which females mated with two to three males at a single redd, polygyny in which males mated with two females at different redds, use of two redds by a single female, and use of one redd site by two females. Aluminium oxide nanoparticles (Al2 O3 NPs) are increasingly used in diverse applications that has raised concern about their safety. Recent studies suggested that Al2 O3 NPs induced oxidative stress may be the cause of toxicity in algae, Ceriodaphnia dubia, Caenorhabditis elegans and Danio rerio. However, there is paucity on the toxicity of Al2 O3 NPs on fish cell lines. The current study was aimed to investigate Al2 O3 NPs induced cytotoxicity, oxidative stress and morphological abnormality of Chinnok salmon cells (CHSE-214). A dose-dependent decline in cell viability was observed in CHSE-214 cells exposed to Al2 O3 NPs. Oxidative stress induced by Al2 O3 NPs in CHSE-214 cells has resulted in the significant reduction of superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione in a dose-dependent manner. Human disturbances to ecosystems have created challenges to populations worldwide, forcing them to respond phenotypically in ways that increase their fitness under current conditions. One approach to examining population responses to disturbance in species with complex life histories is to study species that exhibit spatial patterns in their phenotypic response across populations or demes. In this study, we investigate a threatened population of fall chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) in the Snake River of Idaho, in which a significant fraction of the juvenile population have been shown to exhibit a yearling out-migration strategy which had not previously been thought to exist. To further characterize the toxicological risk associated with chemical contaminants in Great Lakes fish, a multigeneration rat reproduction study was designed. Mature chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tsawytscha), collected during the Fall 1991 spawning runs from Sydenham River, Lake Huron, and Credit River, Lake Ontario, were filleted, lyophilized, and incorporated into standard rat diets at 25% (w/w) or 100% (w/w) of the normal protein compliment [casein, 20% (w/w)]. This resulted in diets composed of 5 or 20% (w/w) lyophilized fish and estimated daily fish intakes by the rats at levels approximately 15- and 60-fold greater, respectively, than the current estimate for the Canadian public for all fish and seafood.
