Porta Tiburtina – detta anche, a partire dal periodo post costantiniano, porta San Lorenzo – è un varco a singolo fornice collocato a est della cinta muraria edificata da Lucio Domizio Aureliano e Marco Aurelio Probo nella seconda metà del III secolo, laddove la consolare Tiburtina Valeria usciva dall’urbe per dirigere il cammino verso Tibur (Tivoli). Circa 100 metri oltre la porta, dalla via Tiburtina si separava la via Collatina, collegamento tra Roma e Collatia, nei pressi dell’attuale frazione di Lunghezza.

The Roman wall, of rectangular plan and rounded corners, following the canonical military model, is the major evidence of the fortress built by the Legion VII Gemina in León in 74 AD. The archaeological interventions developed throughout the decades have confirmed that the defensive system consists of two adjacent walls: the first one dates back to the Low Empire, while the other, attached to the previous one by its external face, is dated Late Third to Early Fourth century AD. We, too, must add an internal rampart (agger) corresponding to a previous defensive system. The 3D virtual restitution we have undertaken allows us to contemplate, with further detail, the features of this almost 20 meters wide constructive complex that has conditioned the urban development of the city of León.

En este trabajo ofrecemos una revisión sintética de los rasgos imperantes en las murallas, calles y redes de saneamiento de las ciudades hispanas de época antonina, análisis que forma parte de una aproximación global al proceso de evolución y transformación de estos núcleos urbanos en el citado marco temporal.

Abstract: The authors present the stages of the investigation of the linear fortification from southern Moldavia, stretching from the Pruth River to the Siret River (Stoicani–Ploscuţeni), as well as the opinions expressed on the dating and the historical context of the erection of this ancient monument: the Roman rule (C. Schuchhardt, C. Croitoru); Athanaric’s Goths against the invading Huns (R. Vulpe); the Carpi of Moldavia against the Romans (I. Ioniţă) or against the Sarmatians settled in Muntenia (M. Brudiu). Compared with other Roman walls, the fortification from southern Moldavia has the ditch to the south of the wall, and displays a rudimentary and nonuniform character along the approximately 100 km it runs — a reason for which the authors consider that a Roman origin of the monument cannot be upheld. After analysing the historical context, the authors consider that the fortification was raised from the initiative of the Dacian king Decebalus, in order to halt the Roman northward advance, after the latter established control over the present-day Muntenia and southern Moldavia. Three stages in the use of this fortification are proposed: (a) the Dacian period (up to the conquest of Dacia); (b) the Roman period, when the ditch is covered and the wall is used for watching the lands to the north (left outside the province of Dacia); and (c) a post-Roman period, during which the ditch is partially re-dug, with smaller dimensions than the initial one. The excavations conducted in 2013 at Băleni (Galaţi County) provided a series of data on the construction of the structure, the stages of its use, and the history of this monument.

Rezumat: În studiul de faţă autorii prezintă stadiul cercetării fortificaţiei liniare din sudul Moldovei – ce se întinde între râurile Prut și Siret (Stoicani-Ploscuţeni), precum și principalele ipoteze relative la încadrarea cronologică, respectiv contextul istoric ce a stat la baza ridicării acestui monument: în timpul și cu concursul administraţiei romane (C. Schuchhardt, C. Croitoru), în contextul invaziei hunilor împotriva goţilor lui Athanaric (R. Vulpe), de către carpi împotriva romanilor (I. Ioniţă) sau împotriva sarmaţilor din Muntenia (M. Brudiu). Comparativ cu alte fortificaţii romane ansamblul din sudul Moldovei are șanţul la sud de val și un aspect rudimentar, neuniform de-a lungul celor aproximativ 100 de kilometri – motive pentru care originea romană nu poate fi susţinută. După analiza propriu-zisă a contextului istoric, autorii consideră că fortificaţia a fost ridicată din iniţiativa regelui Decebal, în încercarea de a opri înnaintarea romană după ce Muntenia și sudul Moldovei actuale fuseseră cucerite. Sunt propuse trei etape de utilizare: (a) perioada dacică (până la cucerire); (b) perioada romană când șanţul a fost acoperit și valul utilizat pentru observarea teritoriilor nordice (rămase în afara graniţelor romane); (c) perioada post-romană în care șanţul a fost resăpat parţial, având dimensiuni mai reduse decat cel iniţial. Cercetările efectuate în anul 2013 la Băleni (judeţul Galaţi) s-au soldat cu o serie de informaţii relative la construcţie, la structura sa, la etapele de utilizare și istoricul acestui monument.

Se presentan los resultados de un estudio geo-arqueológico que ha tenido como objetivo, por un lado, la identificación litológica de los materiales constructivos que sirvieron para levantar el importante recinto amurallado tardorromano de Castro Ventosa, y, por otro, la exploración del origen de tales materias primas en su contexto geológico local, con el objeto de determi­nar las canteras de extracción y las distancias de acarreo de aquellas al sitio arqueológico. Todos los materiales de construcción, incluida la caliza necesaria para Ia elaboración de la cal utilizada como aglutinante para la fabricación del opus caementicium de la muralla, se encuen­tran en una radio de distancia inferior a 5 km.

During the past few years the roman city of Castro Ventosa
has come being object of archaeological activities to be
aimed to the valuation of its scientific and cultural virtues.
Although the human occupation of the site dates back to
Iron Age we deal here with the settlement of Roman
times, whose recognisable characteristics are an impres­sive wall of more of 1.130 m of length and 4 m of thickness,
recently discovered and restored. The last campaign of excavations, related here, have uncovered the western
door of the wall, which displays common characteristics
with other Late Roman cities (Asturica, Legio, Lucus Augusti, Veleia, etc.) from the northern half of Hispania
and, mainly, in its northwestern corner.
