"The paper focuses on the U.S. image as constructed by the
mechanism of communist propaganda and reflected in the postwar
media discourse. The late 1940s Romanian cultural press–
representing the area of interest of the study (as one of the most
used propaganda instruments of the regime) – contains a series of
negative stereotypes on the U.S. culture as part of a larger political
“campaign” (started by the Moscow regime and taking place in a
similar manner in the Eastern European countries) which marked
the beginning of the Cold War. Through a complex of
instruments belonging both to visual and written discourse,
Romanian post-war cultural press presented the image of a U.S.
decaying culture. The distorted image of the other - the different - is
complex and persistent, being constructed in opposition with the
self-reflection through different types of discourse (articles,
comments to pictures, caricatures and so on) and a large number
of subthemes (the decaying school system, the crisis of culture
reflected by the book market and libraries, the both decadent and
decaying literature, the general ignorance and disrespect towards
culture). Last but not least, the paper deals with the dominance of
some elements of discourse, as their impact had to have a double
dimension, both of Communist propaganda and anti - U.S
propaganda (represented by Voice of America), feature specific to
the post-war and beginning of the Cold War press discourse. "

ABSTRACT A detailed account of the background and process of Ireland's aid to defeated Germany. Underlines the role it played in the lives of ordinary Germans in the immediate aftermath of the war when Germany was ostracized by the world. Drawing on archival sources it shows that it was part of Ireland's pan-European post-war aid to the devastated continent. Initially it was misinterpreted by Allied public opinion but then its value was seen. Religious motivations played an important role as did the governmental argument that it was incumbent on Ireland to demonstrate a positive neutrality in the immediate postwar world.

The 100 Faces of War Experience has travelled to galleries, museums, and other public spaces around the country, where the paintings are accompanied by a personal statement and brief biography. • Filmmaker Ken Burns' hugely popular documentaries, The Civil War and The War, about World War II, have brought the stories of soldiers and veterans to millions of television viewers and to schoolchildren across America. • Founded in 1997, the Maine Humanities Council has developed a Literature and Medicine program. Using a specially published anthology, Echoes of War, dozens of health care facilities and Veterans Administration hospitals across the country have collaborated with state humanities councils to convene regular reading groups in which medical staff learn through literature to empathize with the traumas experienced by the veterans and severely wounded soldiers whom they serve. • The Minnesota Historical Society has produced an exhibition titled Our Lives, Our Stories: Minnesota's Greatest Generation and other educational programs exploring the experience of the generation that fought World War II. The exhibit later traveled to other states. • To spur public discussion and appreciation of the experiences of American veterans, the Aquila Theatre Company will put on free performances of ancient Greek dramas in 100 libraries across the country, primarily in underserved, rural and inner-city communities. The programs will use classical themes like " the returning warrior " to bring veterans and their families together with the general public for a shared experience of Greek theater followed by town hall style discussion of issues. • The papers of prominent American military leaders s are a vital part of our cultural heritage and NEH has undertaken to preserve and make them accessible to the public. NEH grants supported the editing of the collected papers of Superior, Wisconsin, include a fully restored P-38 Lightning Aircraft similar to one the museum's namesake flew in the Pacific theater. To preserve this and other treasures, the museum is developing a plan to improve storage of its extensive wartime collection. The Endowment has funded more than a hundred projects about military history, wartime leaders, and those who fought in America's Twentieth Century wars. It has also funded programs designed to be of particular interest and use to today's veterans.

This article examines the recollections of middle-class British housewives who experienced symptoms of neurosis, anxiety or depression during the post Second World War period. It specifically addresses the claim made by feminist commentators, that the banality and stultification of the domestic role caused mental illness in women. The oral testimonies suggest that, in many cases, housewives of the 1950s and 1960s found contentment in their role, identifying instead problematic interpersonal relationships or trauma during childhood as the cause of their symptoms. The article argues that the causes of anxiety and depression were more complex than has previously been suggested and seeks to provide a more sophisticated analysis of women's experience.

The goal of this study was to analyze the extent to which the visual coverage of the final stages (April/May 2009) of the long-lasting Sri Lankan Civil War relied on war and peace frames. After Mussolini’s regime collapsed, Italy rebuilt itself as a nation and a democracy. The Republican Constitution approved in 1948 rejected the ideologies of both racism and racial discrimination, which had been strengthened and made harsher by Fascism since the mid-1930s. Yet, despite this, racism and racialisation continued in the post-Fascist years. The article analyses how the presence of former colonial subjects in Italy between the 1940s and 1960s was perceived, represented and managed, and demonstrates that the hegemonic discourse of the post-war period still considered Italy to be a white and ethnically homogeneous nation. It considers the stories of people from Libya and Eritrea who applied for Italian citizenship and the life in Italy of some Somali students in the 1960s.
