During restoration works in two monuments in the Old Town of
Rethymnon, rescue excavations were carried out, that brought to light
interesting remains.
At Kastrinoyiannakis Street, the ruined church of the Holy Apostles was
completely unearthed. Three building phases can be discerned: In the late 14th or early 15th century was constructed the initial single-nave church. In the 16th century, another nave was added to the north, while the whole building expanded to the west. During the years of the Ottoman rule, the building was a part of a larger complex with residential use.
Further research at the Twin Building, in the Bastion of Ayios Nicholaos
of the Fortezza Fortress, revealed the foundations of an older construction within the building, possibly a house dated to the second half of the 16th century. Numismatic evidence from the deepest layers, such as the coin of Justinian the 1st, certify the use of Palaeochora’s hill, on which the Fortress was built, in the early Christian period.

Hieromonk Damaskinos is the most prominent painter on Mount Athos at the turn of the 18th century. He stemmed from Ioannina and he came to Mount Athos as a young painter in the 80’s of the 17th century, where he stayed all of his life. Having learnt the basics of the art of painting at a workshop, which had been invited to Mount Athos apparently from Epirus, separated from it and established a worshop of his own, which dominated on Mount Athos for more than two decades and used to undertake large scale works in lots of monasteries like Dionysiou, Docheiariou, Vatopedi, Karakallou and the Great Lavra as well as in Skyros island. He himself has also painted numerous icons, which are kept in various athonite monasteries as well as in churches in Northern Greece, Bulgaria and Cyprus and in various private and state collections in Switzerland, Russia, Greece and Lebanon.
Damaskinos worked in a transitional artistic period on Mount Athos and he incorporated trends from various artistic origins. At his time local painting activity on Mount Athos had just started again after an abrupt cease for more than two decades and was caracterized by awkwardness towards the paintings of the old masters due to the lack of painters capable of teaching the following generation of local artists.
He developed his own distinct style. Having stayed at Docheiariou Monastery for a relevant long time he indulged in the work of Tzortzis, who had painted the main church of it. He scrutinized his paintings and his iconographic programme and was extensively influenced by him. Besides, he studied the works of the other masters who had worked on Mount Athos in the 16th century, Theophanes the cretan and Frangos Castellanos, and borrowed specific elements from them. Avoiding innovations he tried to keep up the byzantine tradition, as he saw it in the work of the masters he had studied.
Damaskinos’s eagerness to improve his work by studying the work of old masters is clear in his late works. He was heavily criticised by the well-known painter Dionysius of Fourna, who strongly disliked Damaskinos’s style of painting and guided young painters not to follow untalented painters like him but to study instead the works of old byzantine masters like Panselinos in Protaton. Damaskinos’s response was to go to the church of Protaton, where he tried to copy the late byzantine style of Panselinos’s works there.
Hieromonk Damaskinos, a man of knowledge and good grounding in Theology, has left a very important work that helps us understand this important transitional period in the athonite art and the procedures and turmoils that lead from the high-quality art of the masters who kept up the byzantine tradition in the two first centuries of ottoman occupation to the revival of it in the 18th century.

L’auteur propose une synthèse des architectures chrétiennes construites dans les Balkans, qu’il structure de manière transnationale afin de mieux surprendre les traits communs. Il retrace leurs histoire à travers deux grandes étapes chronologiques : celle des « résistances, médiations et adaptations, du XVIe au XVIIe siècle, et celle de la « naissance des éclectismes et nouvelles spécificités », aux XVIIIe et XIXe siècles. Au long de ce découpage chronologique, l’article examine l’art chrétien – notamment les églises – en conjonction avec les grands courants artistiques de l’Europe du temps, leur circulation et l’influence exercée.

Architecture and Art in the Balkans During the Ottoman Times - Organized as a national-crossover overview, this study of Christian architectures in the Balkans aims at defining their common features. Their history evolved in two phases: the “resistance, mediations and adaptations” (16th-17th c.), and the “birth of eclectisms and new specificities” (18th-19th c.). The author examines Christian art -most specifically churches – in the light of broad artistic trends in Europe at the same time.

The Building Housing the Offices of the Paros-Naxos Metropolis in Naxos
This paper presents the description of the building and the study of its construction phases, as well as the proposals for restoration, as approved by the Ministry of Culture. The building that houses today the offices of the Metropolis of Paros-Naxos in Naxos is located in Chora next to the metropolitan Church in the area called Grotta. It has been declared a listed monument by the Ministry of Culture. The building, which has a total plan    of 15x18m and a total height of about 10 meters, is surrounded by three sides of municipal roads, while to the east it has a mezzanine with another property. It is three-storey high but every floor is different in plan due to the inclination of the terrain and the particular building tradition of the Cyclades Islands. The basement houses the metropolis museum with an independent entrance to the north, the ground floor, which is entered from the wide courtyard, the offices of the metropolis and the first floor the metropolitan's residence.
The building is covered with horizontal roofs and whitewashed, as is customary in Naxos, hiding the different building phases. Its older part could be the one straddling the road to the south that could have been the lost castle “gate of the Greek metropolis”. According to a published contract a preexisting first core of the building was bought by the metropolitan Anthimos in 1744, probably the part housing today the kitchen. The building was extended later to the north, occupying the lower level of the site, an action probably linked with the construction of the nearby Metropolitan Cathedral in 1787. The building was again extended to the west probably during the last years of Ottoman rule, while some additions were made in the 20th century. A small addition
The building is in generally good condition, apart from minor humidity problems. However its internal layout was changed to serve better the needs of the Metropolis. On the top floor to the north few rooms were added and a semi-open space was created.

The small single-nave church of St Paul near Akamatra
in Ikaria is known for its non-figurative painted decoration.
The re-examination of the three written inscriptions
of the church leads to the conclusion that it does
not date to 1103/4, as was hitherto believed, but to 1612,
since their first letter is not ς΄ but α΄. The particular
form of the letter ‘α’ also appears in Ikarian documents
of the 17th century. The architecture of the church indicates
a similar date. Therefore, the non-figurative decoration
of the church of St Paul is interpreted as the
result of the inability to invite a painter, due to the conditions
of extreme poverty that prevailed in early 17th
century Ikaria.

Ο ναός του Αγίου Ιωάννη βρίσκεται στο άνω τμήμα του οικισμού του Ταξιάρχη, στον Δήμο Ωρεών της Β. Εύβοιας. Eίναι μονόχωρος, με ημιεξαγωνική κόγχη ιερού και καλύπτεται με δίρριχτη ξύλινη στέγη.                                         
Η σημερινή εικόνα του ναού παρουσιάζεται αρκετά αλλοιωμένη, τόσο από τις περιμετρικές επιχώσεις, όσο και από νεώτερες επεμβάσεις, όπως το νεωτερικό βάθρο με το στέγαστρο από σκυρόδεμα στη βόρεια όψη.
Η πρόταση αποκατάστασης περιλαμβάνει την κατασκευή υποθεμελίωσης, την κατεδάφιση του νεωτερικού στεγάστρου, την αποκάλυψη του περιγράμματος του χαγιατιού, λιθοσυρραφές, τοπικά ενέματα και αρμολόγημα, την κατασκευή νέας ξύλινης στέγης, αντικατάσταση των κουφωμάτων, αποκάλυψη του αρχικού λίθινου δαπέδου, καθαρισμό και συντήρηση του λίθινου ανάγλυφου διακόσμου, συντήρηση του αναλημματικού τοίχου, ήπιες παρεμβάσεις διαμόρφωσης στον άμεσο περιβάλλοντα χώρο και νέο Η/Μ εξοπλισμό.

The book is an extensive study of the Post-Byzantine frescoes of the church of St Stephan, in the homonymous monastery at Meteora, in combination with other Post-Byzantine frescoes in Thessaly.. The frescoes probably date from the first 3 or 4 decades of the 17th century.

The church of Agios Dimitrios in Aetochori, district of Pella, is a three-aisled basilica with a surrounding portico. The church has a saddleback roof, whereas the portico an independent lean-to roof, at a lower level.
A bell tower abuts on the NW corner of the portico. The overall dimensions, including the portico, are 29 X 19,15 m., while those of the church alone are 19,20 X 11,55 m., not including the apse. The walls are 0,90 m. thick, built with rubble masonry and mud. In the interior, a wooden iconostasis defines the sanctuary, while to the west a narthex is separated from the naos by a wooden shutter and lattice-grill. Two rows of columns, consisting of wooden posts of square cross-section
circularly shaped by lath, divide the nave into three aisles. The floor is paved with slates of various sizes. A wooden staircase leads to a gallery (gynaekonites). Entrance to the portico is made through two arched
doors on the east side and to the church through one door on the south and one on the west side.
Four phases are detected in the construction and decoration of church. During the first one (1842), the portico extended only along the southern and western side. In the interior, the elevated narthex reached to the western pair of columns and had trellises, but not a gallery. Painting only existed on the surfaces of the wooden elements of the roofs and arcades, and consisted of floral motifs and rosettes. During the second
phase (1866) the church was fully painted by Anastasios from Krusovo and his sons. Their presence in this region is crucial, as they painted five churches, from 1842 to 1888. The next, third, stage (1884) relates to the extension of the portico on the east and north sides, the construction of the bell tower and the paving of the church and portico floor. Agios Dimitrios is a unique example of church, as far as we know, with
portico on all four sides. This peculiar arrangement should be associated with the rise of the social role of the portico, along with the increase of the village population, some liturgical requirements, and the cold climate. The last phase (1928) consists of small-scaleover-painting of the murals.
The decoration follows astandard iconographic program of the era, developed in the central apse, two zones along the church walls and the wooden surfaces over the arcades. The modest means and limited capacities of the painters lead to a simplistic, often naïve expression. Thus, elements like standardization and repetition of the figures, which are short with large members, misconceptions and simplicity of the color palette, are inevitable. Moreover, the quality of the painted decoration shows inconsistency. Thus, sometimes becomes obvious the hand of Anastasios, a gifted painter showing meticulous care for his forms, and sometimes the hand of his sons, whose quality is lower, with broad brushstrokes and concise execution of the faces and landscapes.

Η εργασία αφορά στην μεθοδολογία τεκμηρίωσης και αποκατάστασης ξύλινων στεγών σε τυπικές εκκλησίες του 19ου αιώνα στη Βόρεια Ελλάδα. Οι εκκλησίες αυτές που ανήκουν στον τύπο της τρίκλιτης βασιλικής παρουσιάζουν μεγάλες ομοιότητες ως προς την κάτοψη και τις διαστάσεις τους, αλλά και ως προς το κατασκευαστικό τους σύστημα. Σε αρκετές περιπτώσεις μάλιστα, οι μεγαλοπρεπείς αυτοί ναοί είχαν κτιστεί από συγκεκριμένα οικοδομικά συνεργεία που προέρχονταν από την Ήπειρο και την Δυτική Μακεδονία. Τα παραπάνω επιτρέπουν στους μελετητές να χρησιμοποιήσουν παράλληλα παραδείγματα για την τεκμηρίωση της αρχικής μορφής συγκεκριμένων οικοδομικών στοιχείων που έχουν σε πολλές περιπτώσεις καταστραφεί ή αλλοιωθεί σε μεγάλο βαθμό, όπως είναι για παράδειγμα οι ξύλινες στέγες των εκκλησιών αυτών. Ως μελέτη περίπτωσης χρησιμοποιείται ο ναός του Αγίου Δημητρίου στο ερειπωμένο σήμερα οικισμό του Μοσχοχωρίου που βρίσκεται στο νομό Φλώρινας, πολύ κοντά στα ελληνοαλβανικά σύνορα.
Αναλύονται στοιχεία σχετικά με την τυπολογία και τις διαστάσεις των κατόψεων των τρίκλιτων βασιλικών της ευρύτερης περιοχής της Φλώρινας και των Πρεσπών, ενώ συγχρόνως, αναφέρονται δεδομένα σχετικά με τον σχεδιασμό και την υλοποίηση της κάτοψης. Η σχετική έρευνα αποδεικνύει ότι οι εκκλησίες αυτές «σχεδιάστηκαν» όσον αφορά την κάτοψη τους με την χρήση συγκεκριμένων αριθμητικών μετρικών προτύπων, ενώ η χάραξη τους έγινε πιθανά με την βοήθεια ορθογωνίων τριγώνων και η κατασκευή πραγματοποιήθηκε με βάση το σύστημα του τεκτονικού πήχη.
Τα κατακόρυφα δομικά στοιχεία των εκκλησιών του 19ου αιώνα είναι δομημένα από λιθοδομή με πηλοκονιάματα ή σπανιότερα ασβεστοκονιάματα και αρμολογούνται με ασβεστοκονίαμα, ενώ τα οριζόντια δομικά στοιχεία (ενδιάμεσα πατώματα και οροφές) είναι κατασκευασμένα με τοπική δομική ξυλεία. Οι ξύλινες στέγες ακολουθούν συγκεκριμένο δομικό σύστημα όπου υπάρχουν βασικοί φορείς που εδράζονται στις κιονοστοιχίες, και πυκνή τεγίδωση που καλύπτεται με πέτσωμα.
Η μορφή των υπό εξέταση εκκλησιών παρουσιάζει έντονη ποικιλομορφία, και ακολουθεί συνήθως με μεγαλύτερη ή μικρότερη πιστότητα τα ρεύματα της εποχής. Οι εκκλησίες των μέσων του 19ου αιώνα παρουσιάζουν σχετικά απλή μορφολογία ενώ αντίθετα οι ναοί του τέλους του ίδιου αιώνα επηρεάζονται από τον κλασικισμό και εμφανίζουν στοιχεία που παραπέμπουν σε νεοαναγεννησιακά πρότυπα.
Πρόκειται για μία σημαντική τρίκλιτη βασιλική, κτισμένη το 1871, η οποία είχε στο νότιο τμήμα γυναικωνίτη σε όροφο. Η ποιότητα της λιθοδομής και του αρμολογήματος δείχνει ότι η εκκλησία κτίστηκε από σημαντικό συνεργείο, που προερχόταν πιθανά από τα μαστοροχώρια της Ηπείρου ή από τα μαστοροχώρια του Ν. Κοζάνης. Τα ανοίγματα πλαισιώνονται από λίθινα μέλη και φέρουν ανακουφιστικά τόξα στο επάνω μέρος. Στη δυτική όψη υπήρχε προστέγασμα με λίθινους κίονες στη θύρα εισόδου, και λίθινος σταυρός στο επάνω μέρος, ενώ στην ανατολική όψη στο αέτωμα πάνω από το ιερό, σωζόταν κυκλικός φεγγίτης με ακτινωτή παράσταση, με δύο λίθινα κυπαρίσσια εκατέρωθεν. Τα λίθινα αυτά μέλη βρίσκονται σήμερα πεσμένα στο εσωτερικό του ναού, μαζί με αρκετά δομικά στοιχεία της στέγης και κάποια από τα ξύλινα μέλη που στήριζαν εσωτερικά την στέγη και διαμόρφωναν τα κλίτη. Στο εσωτερικό του ναού σώζεται μεγάλο τμήμα των αρχικών επιχρισμάτων όπου και διακρίνονται οι ζώνες του ενδιάμεσου πατώματος  και του εξώστη (γυναικωνίτης).
Η μεθοδολογία αναπαράστασης βασίζεται στα παρακάτω βήματα: Αρχικά πραγματοποιήθηκε βιβλιογραφική έρευνα για να εντοπιστούν τα παραδείγματα εκκλησιών της άμεσης γεωγραφικής περιοχής, τα οποία έχουν παρόμοιο τυπολογία, μορφή και κατασκευή στέγης. Οι ξύλινοι φορείς της δίρριχτης στέγης ακολουθούν παρόμοιο κατασκευαστικό σύστημα με αυτό που εμφανίζεται στον Αγ. Γεώργιο Κρυσταλλοπηγής (1891), στην Αγία Παρασκευή του Πισοδερίου (1848) και στον Αγ. Αθανασίο στο ερημωμένο χωριό Σφήκα. Συγχρόνως, χρησιμοποιούνται και πιο απομακρυσμένα παραδείγματα, όπως αυτό του Αγ. Γεωργίου στην Εράτυρα (1844), με στόχο τη σύγκριση των επιμέρους λεπτομερειών και την εξαγωγή συμπερασμάτων.
Η τυποποίηση των διαστάσεων της κάτοψης επιτρέπει τον καθορισμό της ακριβούς θέσης των ξύλινων κιόνων που διαμορφώνουν τα κλίτη, καθώς και την αναπαράσταση του εξώστη του γυναικωνίτη πάνω από την είσοδο. Η αρχική στάθμη της στέγης, ορίστηκε με βάση το σωζόμενο νοτιοανατολικό τμήμα του περιμετρικού γείσου. Οι θέσεις των βασικών φορέων, που τοποθετούνται ανά 375 εκ. καθώς και οι αποστάσεις της τεγίδωσης (75 εκ.) προκύπτουν από την ανάλυση των παρόμοιων παραδειγμάτων, της κάτοψης του ναού και του εμβάτη που χρησιμοποιήθηκε, ενώ η κλίση της στέγης (26ο) προκύπτει από την φωτογραμμετρική ανάλυση της ανατολικής και δυτικής όψης.
Παρά το γεγονός, ότι οι ακριβείς θέσεις των βασικών φορέων και των ελκυστήρων δεν είναι γνωστές καθώς δεν σώζονται ίχνη δοκοθηκών εξαιτίας της καταστροφής της ανοδομής, ο καθαρισμός του δαπέδου θα αποκαλύψει τις ακριβείς θέσεις των κιόνων και θα οριστικοποιήσει την μορφή της στέγης.
Οι ξύλινες στέγες των εκκλησιών του 19ου αιώνα στη Βόρεια Ελλάδα, αποτελούν οικοδομικά στοιχεία που παρουσιάζουν μεγάλη τυποποίηση, κατασκευάζονται με παρόμοιες αρχές και ακολουθούν συγκεκριμένα οικοδομικά πρότυπα. Με βάση την ανάλυση του δομικού συστήματος και τις λεπτομέρειες κατασκευής στεγών από εκκλησίες γειτονικών περιοχών της ίδιας περιόδου, γίνεται δυνατή η αναπαράσταση της μορφής της κατεστραμμένης και κατά βάση άγνωστης στέγης ενός σημαντικού και αξιόλογου μνημείου του 19ου αιώνα.
Από τα παραπάνω φαίνεται ότι σε περιπτώσεις όπου η εικόνα ενός μνημείου είναι ελλιπής, μπορούν να χρησιμοποιηθούν υπό προϋποθέσεις παράλληλα παραδείγματα μνημείων, με στόχο την ασφαλή ολοκλήρωση της εικόνας και την επιστημονικά τεκμηριωμένη αποκατάσταση της αρχικής μορφής.

This paper constitutes an effort to investigate the application of specific design and constructional tracing in post-Byzantine churches situated in northwestern Greece, mainly in the wider area of the town of Florina and the Prespa Lakes, covering a period from the fifteenth to the nineteenth century. Firstly, a review of the relevant previous studies concerning the investigation of proportions and constructional tracing in Byzantine churches is presented. Secondly, a brief analysis of the metric systems of the Byzantine and the Ottoman period is given in order to define the applied modules. Furthermore, the typology of post-Byzantine churches is analysed. The main part of the paper includes the investigation of the constructional grid and the proportions in several plan drawings, in combination with the use of triangular tracing (right triangles). The analysis is also extended to façades and sections, in order to demonstrate the standardisation of the construction. Apart from the above, the application of the golden section in some examples is also examined. Finally, conclusions are drawn concerning the design and application of models and tracing on the construction of post-Byzantine churches.

This study examines the building of the magkipeion (the
place where bread was made) of Megisti Lavra on Mt.
Athos, one of only a very few preserved old monastic
magkipeia. Following an examination of its building
phases and various features, a dating for the building to
the 16th century is proposed, as well as the graphic reconstruction
of its original form.

Η μελέτη διερευνά την εξέλιξη του αρχιτεκτονικού τύπου της τρίκλιτης βασιλικής εκκλησίας κατά τον 19ο αιώνα σε σχέση με τα προγενέστερα παραδείγματα. Επισημαίνει τα νεωτεριστικά χαρακτηριστικά και τις διάφορες παραλλαγές τους. Περιλαμβάνει ένα κατάλογο βασιλικών της εποχής αυτής που κτίστηκαν τόσο στο νεοσύστατο ελληνικό κράτος, όσο και σε περιοχές της οθωμανικής αυτοκρατορίας, στις οποίες κατοικούσαν ανθηρές ελληνικές κοινότητες.
The study explores the evolution of the architectural type of the 19th century three-aisled basilica in relation to the previous examples. It highlights the innovative features and their variations. It includes a list of basilicas of that period built both in the newly formed Greek state and in areas of the Ottoman Empire inhabited by flourishing Greek communities.

Στην ηλεκτρονική  αυτή πλατφόρμα ο επισκέπτης γνωρίζει τα θρησκευτικά μνημεία μέσα από σύντομα συνοδευτικά κείμενα και ενδεικτικές εικόνες (εξωτερικές και εσωτερικές). Η εικονική περιήγηση στους ναούς και στις μονές της περιοχής αναδεικνύει με τρόπο παραστατικό τον πολιτιστικό πλούτο και την πνευματική ανάπτυξη και αποτελεί το ερέθισμα για μία επιτόπια περιήγηση και φυσική παρουσία στα μνημεία του Ζαγορίου.

Τον 19ο αιώνα ένας ανανεωμένος τύπος τρίκλιτης βασιλικής κυριάρχησε για την εκτός μοναστηριών θρησκευτική αρχιτεκτονική στο νεοσύστατο ελληνικό κράτος και σε πόλεις και χωριά της Οθωμανικής Αυτοκρατορίας όπου κατοικούσαν ενεργές ελληνικές κοινότητες. Αυτός ο τύπος αντικατοπτρίζει νέα στιλιστικά ρεύματα και κοινωνικοπολιτικές συνθήκες, υιοθετώντας καινοτόμες αρχές σύνθεσης και μορφολογικά στοιχεία. H παρούσα μελέτη συνοψίζει τα χαρακτηριστικά που διαφοροποιούν τις βασιλικές του 19ου αιώνα από τις μεταβυζαντινές αντίστοιχές τους 18ου αιώνα.

In the 19th century a renewed type of three-aisled basilica dominated for the non-monastic religious architecture in the newly established Greek state and in cities and villages of the Ottoman Empire where active Greek communities resided. This type reflected new stylistic currents and socio-political conditions, adopting innovative compositional principles and morphological elements. This study summarizes the features that differentiate the 19th century basilicas from their 18th century post-Byzantine counterparts.

Οι μεταβυζαντινοί ναοί της Καππαδοκίας παραμένουν λίγο γνωστοί, γιατί επισκιάζονται από τους παλαιοχριστιανικούς και τους βυζαντινού. Ωστόσο οι ναοί που κτίστηκαν εκεί την περίοδο του Τανζιμάτ στην Οθωμανική αυτοκρατορία είναι ιδιαίτερα ενδιαφέροντες και γοητευτικοί. Αποτελούν μια αυτόνομη ενότητα, που εντάσσεται όμως στην ελλαδική ναοδομία την εποχή αυτή, με ιδιαίτερα χαρακτηριστικά. Στους ναούς αυτούς συνδυάζονται μοναδικά οικοδομικοί τρόποι της Ανατολής, δυτικόφερτα στοιχεία από την Κύπρο, χαρακτηριστικά σελτζουκικά, αρμενικά, αλλά και κλασικιστικά. Πρόκειται για μια αρχιτεκτονική που αντανακλά άμεσα το γλωσσικό ιδίωμα, τη γραφή και την ψυχοσύνθεση των χριστιανών κατοίκων της Καππαδοκίας και, εντέλει, τους εθνικούς τους προσανατολισμούς.
The post-Byzantine churches of Cappadocia remain scarcely known, because they are overshadowed by the Early-Christian and the Byzantine ones. However, the churches built there during the Tanzimat period in the Ottoman Empire are very interesting and charming. They compose an autonomous unit of churches, inscribed in the larger context of Greek religious architecture of that period with special characteristics. These churches uniquely combine eastern building traditions, western elements imported from Cyprus, typical Seljuk, Armenian, but also neoclassical characteristics. It is an architecture that directly reflects the linguistic idiom, writing and psychosynthesis of the Christian inhabitants of Cappadocia and, finally, their national orientation.

Il s'agit d'une présentation des résultats préliminaires du projet "Le dialogue interconfessionnel du bâti : architecture religieuse de l’espace urbain et périurbain en Macédoine et en Thrace occidentale au XVe siècle"  que je mène à l'Ecole française d'Athènes depuis septembre 2020.
