expulsion and forced conversion of Jews from Portugal. Many of those men
emigrated, others, lacking the financial means or convinced of their power
and social importance, stayed as New-Christians – at least apparently.
In the course of time, some of those men became real Christians
but much more maintained their ancestral faith, now hidden. However, and
regardless their true belief, they were not seen neither as fully Christians
nor as Jews in the rabbinical sense. In this dim universe, traditional
classifications are not completely suitable – something always is missed.
The only thing in common those men have is their Iberian Jewish origins.
They were sefarditas.
Caught between two competing and simultaneous allied forces –
King and Church – the sefarditas tried to find a way to survive, prosper and
ascending in a society of orders where each group had their own laws,
privileges and limitations.
Like all the Portuguese Society, they rely on family, friends and on
each other to do business, to marry and to practice the faith. In an
economical perspective, the sefarditas were transversal to all society,
ranging from the poorest to the richest. Nevertheless, the most notable of
them were merchants and financiers and they were in the beginning of
modern capitalism and in the take-off of the world commerce with their
houses and correspondents in all the major trade emporia."

RESUMO As relações entre Portugal e Itália remontam à génese da própria fundação nacional. Num percurso que se mescla com a História da Nação Portuguesa, os membros da Casa de Louriçal foram, ao longo dos séculos estabelecendo relações, trocando correspondência e visitando esse país para lá dos Alpes, deixando para a posteridade esse testemunho de uma convivência próxima nos documentos, imagens e colecções que hoje formam o seu Arquivo. No presente trabalho pretende-se identificar e compreender as relações de uma família portuguesa com os Estados e pessoas que atravessaram a História da península itálica, tendo como base o seu acervo particular.

ABSTRACT The relations between Portugal and Italy go back to the beginnings of the Portuguese kingdom itself. Throughout the centuries, the members of the House of Louriçal established relations with the transalpine country by exchanging letters and visiting the land, leaving for posterity a testimony of close acquaintanceship in the several documents, images and collections that comprise its Archive. The aim of this paper is to identify and understand the relations of the Louriçal household with the people and states of the Italian Peninsula using, for that intent, it own private collections.

No presente estudo faz-se a história comparada da castanha na alimentação e gastronomia portuguesas na longa duração. As fontes consideradas, na sua maioria escritas (tanto literárias, como documentais e técnicas), cobrem cerca de 26 séculos, da Antiguidade clássica, atravessando os espaços europeus historicamente ligados ao cultivo e aproveitamento da castanha, até ao Portugal contemporâneo. O vasto universo de materiais disponíveis obrigou ao estabelecimento de critérios precisos de seleção das fontes, condicionados pelo objetivo principal do estudo: estabelecer a pegada literária da castanha. Assim, o foco da análise recaiu sobre testemunhos escritos sobre o uso da castanha na alimentação humana, buscando para cada época a tipologia de textos mais abundante em termos informativos: para a Antiguidade, textos literários e médicos gregos e romanos; para a Idade Média, documentação régia circunscrita sobretudo ao séc. XIII; para as Épocas Moderna e Contemporânea, os manuscritos, livros e revistas culinárias. A estrutura do trabalho reflete as principais conclusões alcançadas: a castanha como fruto básico da alimentação de populações específicas e consumido em contextos de carência, em que funciona como substituto do alimento primordial, o pão (ponto 1: A castanha, um alimento de sobrevivência); a castanha como património gastronómico, moldado pelas preocupações dietéticas (ponto 2: A castanha, um prazer da mesa em diálogo com as normas dietéticas; ponto 2.1: Consumo da castanha no Portugal moderno, gastronomia e dietética); a cultura, o consumo e as conceções gastronómicas e dietéticas associadas à castanha para Portugal têm raízes em tempos anteriores à fundação da nacionalidade (ponto 1.1: Cultura e consumo de castanha na Antiguidade: herança clássica e realidade portuguesa); a identificação de um “receituário fundador” da castanha nos primeiros tempos da nacionalidade (ponto 1.2: Cultura e consumo de castanha no Portugal medieval); a castanha como ingrediente transversal tanto à cozinha tradicional portuguesa como à cozinha requintada de influência e inspiração estrangeira (ponto 2. 2: Consumo de castanha no Portugal contemporâneo: da “alta cozinha” à cozinha tradicional portuguesa).

Abstract: With this essay, we follow the footsteps of a late-medieval individual and the
manuscripts he produced. This study shows how fruitful a thorough examination of the
materiality of historical sources used by historians can be, which in turn can illuminate
both the social careers of local administrative officials and their intimate connection and
complicity with the royal administration. This work also encompasses the reform of the
municipal charters, one of the main legislative initiatives of the administrative machine in
the early Modern Age in Portugal, confirming that its planning and implementation began
earlier than previously thought by historians. Finally, by closely pursuing through the
centuries the transmission of the main manuscript sources used in this essay, one has a
glimpse of the bureaucratic procedures and archival organization during this period in
Portugal.
Resumo: Com este trabalho pretende-se biografar e cartografar o percurso de uma
personagem tardimedieval e dos seus manuscritos. O estudo evidencia o interesse de uma
abordagem da materialidade das fontes históricas que os historiadores utilizam, a qual
poderá iluminar não somente o percurso social dos oficiais administrativos locais, mas
também a sua estreita ligação e cumplicidade com a administração régia. Este trabalho
aborda ainda alguns aspectos da chamada reforma dos forais, uma dos principais iniciativas
legislativas da máquina administrativa nos inícios da época moderna em Portugal,
confirmando como o seu planeamento e início dos trabalhos precede as datas normalmente
apontadas pela historiografia. Ao se seguir cuidadosamente a transmissão ao longo dos
séculos das principais fontes manuscritas utilizadas neste estudo, entrevemos um pouco
dos trâmites da burocracia e da organização arquivística durante a Idade Moderna em
Portugal.

The Instituto de Odivelas (Infante D. Afonso), women’s military college established in 1900, was placed at the ancient Monastery of S. Dinis, founded by King Dinis, with the agreement of the Queen consort Isabel at the end of the 13th century. The Institute was created as an initiative of the Portuguese Royal House in compliance with the decree of dissolution of the religious orders that had determined the incorporation into the Fazenda Nacional and the consequent secularization of the monastery.
This article focuses on the history of conversion of the monastic complex, the pros and cons of this process, its ideological significance and its practical relapses. It will also be an occasion to launch a proposal of valorisation, in order to restore visibility and accessibility to the Monastery of S. Dinis of Odivelas, classified as “Monument of national interest” already in 1910, taking in account the important heritage it still preserves.

RESUMO Este trabalho visa inventariar a documentação manuscrita existente na Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal com relevância para a História de Itália e das suas relações com Portugal e respectivos territórios ultramarinos. Foram percorridos os principais fundos e colecções com documentação desde a Idade Média até à Idade Contemporânea, sendo os resultados organizados topograficamente de acordo com as cotas da instituição. ABSTRACT This project sought to inventory manuscript documents preserved at Portugal's National Library which are relevant for the history of Italy and its relations with Portugal and Portugal's overseas territories. The main library collections and stocks containing documents dating from the Middle Ages to the Contemporary Age were examined and the results have been organised topographically according to the institution's call-numbers.

In 1995, the Portuguese National Archives (Torre do Tombo) bought from someone hundreds of documents belonging to the Casa de Abrantes but an inventory of such documentation was never available to researchers in the Reference Room (only the inventories related to previous acquisitions). Having bought a mimeographed copy of a list of those documents made in 1982 by Maria José Leal with a view to its acquisition by the National Archives, I share here its contents with fellow colleagues. The documents should be requested as TT, Casa de Abrantes, 2.ª parte, item x. Nevertheless, I was informed at the National Archives that not all the documents made it there, since the seller eventually decided to keep a few of them with him.  The main families represented in the documentation are Silveiras, Lencastres, Vasconcelos de Esporão, Castelos Brancos, Góis, Lemos, Meneses, Sás and Valentes.

Revela-se, com base em dados até hoje desconhecidos, o facto de António Nunes Ribeiro Sanches (1699-1783), médico 'cristão-novo' exilado em Paris, ter lido e comentado o livro 'Carta dogmático-política escrita a Sua Majestade Portuguesa D. José o Primeiro', um violento libelo contra a Inquisição portuguesa, preconizando a sua imediata extinção, que o ex-oratoriano Padre João Moutinho, há muito a residir em Roma, publicou em 1755 em Florência e que lhe valeu ser preso pelo Santo Ofício romano. Do livro de Moutinho apenas são hoje conhecidos dois exemplares incompletos, um da BnF (Paris), outro da BNP (Lisboa). O exemplar de Paris, como agora se apurou, pertenceu a Ribeiro Sanches e contém valiosa marginália da sua mão. Um outro manuscrito de Ribeiro Sanches, conservado na BNE (Madrid), é uma inédita nota de leitura do médico português sobre o livro de Moutinho. O artigo descreve e compara as posições críticas de João Moutinho e Ribeiro Sanches sobre a Inquisição bem como o modo como ambos se relacionaram com o ministro Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo.

This article focuses on the work of Giovanni Carlo Bibiena, more specifically in the conception of the "Real Barraca", residence of the Portuguese Royal Family after the earthquake of 1755.
A blueprint of the "Real Barraca" is presented and analyzed, with special focus on some spaces of its central area. The connection between the "Real Barraca” and the "Paço Velho" is carefully explained, with special attention being given to "Casa da Opera", which was part of "Paço Velho" and also designed by Bibiena.
A reference to the "Capela Real da Ajuda" is also made, which was yet another project by Bibiena, located in the outskirts of "Real Barraca". Finally, the remainders of Bibiena's work in Ajuda are enumerated.

in this session, I´d like to discuss with you the differences between the Portuguese Casa da Índia and the Spanish Casa da Contratación. What were the similarities or differences regarding the administration, privileges and operating modes? What changed during the course of the 16th to the 18th centuries?
Is there any recent comparative study already published? Is there any “History of Institutions” approach existing? What literature should be read?

The Palace of the Lobos da Gama was built in the early 17th century by the family of Lobos da Gama, near the monastery of Santa Clara, in Évora.
The excavation of the site that was once the palace garden, revealed several archaeological structures, ranging from Roman Times to the Contemporary Age.
In the northeast side of the "garden", was dug a sewer pipe associated with the palace, where there were exhumed hundreds of shards of glass, pottery, porcelain and personal use objects such as an ivory comb, pipes and necklace glass beads.
This set is fundamental to understanding the private daily life of a noble house of this period.

A existência de comunidades escravas e libertas residentes no espaço nacional, ao longo da Idade Moderna, é um tema pouco abordado pela historiografia portuguesa. De facto, ainda que estas comunidades nunca deixassem de constituir minorias sociais, o seu papel económico e social tem obrigatoriamente de ser considerado na análise do conjunto do tecido social português moderno.
A freguesia nortenha de Leça da Palmeira, fruto de um quadro geográfico e económico particular, acolheu desde finais de Quinhentos vários elementos negros, cuja comunidade foi aumentando nas centúrias seguintes. Neste artigo apresentam-se os principais traços da vivência desta conunidade, considerando diferentes perspectivas, de modo a reconstruir o seu ambiente social ao longo do século XVII.

Obwohl die Frühe Neuzeit zu den am besten untersuchten Epochen der portugiesischen Geschichte gehört, wurden die Beziehungen Portugals zur deutschsprachigen Welt bisher nicht genügend untersucht. Zum ersten Mal liegt nun ein umfassender Band vor, der die politischen sowie künstlerischen Beziehungen und die Verbreitung von Nachrichten zwischen dem portugiesisch- und dem deutschsprachigen Raum beleuchtet, wobei der Austausch zwischen Portugal und Hamburg in besonderer Weise hervorsticht.
Der Band enthält die Akten des interdisziplinär und international ausgerichteten Kolloquiums, das 2009 an der Universität Hamburg unter Beteiligung von portugiesischen, deutschen und österreichischen Forschern stattgefunden hat. Ganz im Sinne der Ausrichtung des Kolloquiums sind die Beiträge entweder auf Deutsch oder auf Portugiesisch veröffentlicht und schließen mit einer Zusammenfassung in der jeweils anderen Sprache ab.


Embora a Época Moderna seja dos períodos mais estudados da história de Portugal, não têm sido suficientemente investigadas as relações entre o mundo de língua portuguesa e o mundo de língua alemã. Pela primeira vez publica-se um trabalho abrangente, que atende às relações políticas, à circulação de notícias e às relações artísticas entre os espaços de língua portuguesa e de língua alemã, dos quais se destaca o contacto privilegiado entre Portugal e Hamburgo.
O volume consiste na publicação das Atas do Colóquio Internacional e interdisciplinar que decorreu em Hamburgo em Junho de 2009 e no qual participaram investigadores portugueses, alemães e austríacos. Fiéis ao espírito do Colóquio, as contribuições são publicadas em português ou alemão, seguidas de um resumo na outra língua.
