Polish Hasidism

This study explores an important Hasidic manuscript rediscovered among the papers of Abraham Joshua Heschel at Duke University. The text, first noted by Heschel in the 1950s, is a collection of sermons by the famed tzaddik Judah Aryeh Leib Alter of Ger (d. 1905). These homilies are significant because they were transcribed by one of his disciples, in many cases capturing them in the original Yiddish. Comparing this alternative witness to Alter's own Hebrew version (called Sefat emet), printed shortly after his death, reveals substantive differences in the sermons' development, structure, and themes. But the manuscript's importance extends beyond a critical new perspective on Alter's teachings. It offers a snapshot of the processes behind the formation of Hasidic books, and calls for scholars to consider the unavoidable divergences between Hebrew and Yiddish, between orality and textuality, and the transmission of ideas from a teacher to his disciples, vectors of change that inhabit all Hasidic literature.

An antinomian doctrine is most often created in order to endorse a deviation from the law. But why should a thinker build such a doctrine if he immediately stipulates it with so many restrictions that it is rendered theoretical? This question is addressed through the thought of Rabbi Mordekhai Yosef Leiner of Izbica (c.1800-1854), a hasidic leader who sparked the enthusiasm of many modern scholars and spirituality-seekers for his alleged "boldness" and "antinomianism". The article suggests that his doctrines served religious functions similar to those that utopias often serve in politics and literature. Besides the revolutionary function of utopia, that is usually emphasized by scholars, the article points at other, often neglected function: the conservative one.

Rabbi Judah Leib Alter of Ger, a famed nineteenth-century Hasidic master, wrote an influential collection of Hebrew homilies. But it seems that R. Judah Leib’s sermons were also transcribed by his students, some of whom recorded their teacher’s words in the original Yiddish rather than Hebrew translation. This monograph builds upon a newly-discovered Yiddish manuscript of sixty pages. It presents a synoptic edition of the Yiddish text alongside the Hebrew version, thus enabling comparison of the witnesses and demonstrating the development of the various texts. The introduction uses this manuscript to explore broader historical and theoretical issues such as the relationship between written texts and oral culture, the development of written Yiddish, the nature and boundaries of translation, and the complex pathways of transmission from teachers to their students.

ככל הידוע לי, כל החוקרים שהתייחסו לספרו זה של האדמו"ר, ללא יוצא מן הכלל, הסתמכו על מהדורות הדפוס בלבד ולא עיינו בכתב היד. ואולם עיון בכתב היד מורה שלא ניתן לסמוך על הדפוסים, הן בפענוח כתב היד, הן בתיחום וסדר הדרשות, הן במחיקות שהוכנסו ובמשפטים שהושמטו. הסוגיה הסבוכה ביותר העולה מעיון זה היא שספר זה בנוי משכבות שכבות ולא ניתן לסמוך על תיארוך הדרשות המופיע בדפוס. סוגיה זו הינה בעלת השלכות חשובות ומכריעות בהבנת תורת הייסורים של האדמו"ר, וקוראת למחקר חדש ומורכב יותר.

"Megaleh Temirin (Revealer of Secrets), ed. Jonatan Meir, Three volumes, Mosad Bialik, Jerusalem

Megaleh Temirin (Revealer of Secrets), first published in Vienna in 1819, is one of the sharpest and wittiest pieces of Jewish literature written in the first half of the nineteenth century, and is perhaps the most important piece of Hebrew prose composed before the stories of Mendele Mocher Seforim. A sly and complex story deriding Hasidism and Hasidim, it is told through the correspondence between the beadles of Hasidic courts and contemporary rabbis, and it presents a dark picture of  avaricious frauds and swindlers whose main concern was control over territory and the souls of believers, a goal achieved by beguiling the authorities and attacking all opponents. Perl lends his book a ‘Hasidic’ feel both in its physical design and in its language, presenting a Maskilic version of In Praise of the Ba’al Shem Tov that lays Hasidism bare so that no reader will ever be able to look at that, or any other Hasidic book, in the same way again. In addition to the book’s satiric sting, which would have been enough to bring its readers a dual pleasure, Perl’s hints at contemporary people and places, hidden within anagrams and numerological tricks. With the unraveling of these clues, which also include the use of actual Hasidic sources, the book is a valuable, contemporary view of historical reality. A meticulous reading of the book may therefore open a window on the hidden worlds of Hasidism and the Haskalah at the start of the nineteenth century.


The first volume (Imagined Hasidism) serves as an introduction to the complex satirical writings of Josef Perl of Tarnopol (1773-1839). At the center of the book stands an analysis of the satires, Megaleh Temirin (1819) and Bochen Tzadik (1838), including a systematic treatment of the ‘characters’ in the central works and a discussion of the dozens of manuscripts to be found in the Perl Archive in Jerusalem. Perl’s writings are analyzed here in the fuller context of Hebrew and Yiddish literature in general and Maskilic and Hasidic literature in particular, as well as other polemical writings and governmental records critical of Hasidism. The study thus presents a complex and nuanced picture of the relationship between literature and history, between the anti-Hasidic reports and the more complicated historical reality, and lays the groundwork for further research into the genre of nineteenth-century Maskilic satire.

The second and third volumes (Megaleh Temirin) present for the first time an annotated edition of Megaleh Temirin. It is based on the first edition and the scattered manuscripts and it includes a comparison to its Yiddish translation. The book is accompanied by appendices on its origins and contents, including fundamental treatments of several passages: an explication of the encoded names, the Hasidic sources used by the author, and the variants found in the manuscripts and in the only edition of the book in Yiddish.

The editor of the book, Professor Jonatan Meir, teaches in the Goldstein-Goren Department of Jewish Thought at Ben-Gurion University. He has published several articles on the Haskalah of Eastern Europe, Hasidism, and a number of varied topics in twentieth-century Kabbalah.

Philological examination of the Rebbe of Piaseczno’s Holocaust sermons in manuscript yields new insights unknown to the research thus far—and which may even shake existing research to its foundations. To the best of my knowledge, all scholars—without exception—who have addressed themselves to this collection of sermons have based themselves on the published editions only and have not studied the manuscript.
Perusal of the manuscript demonstrates that the published editions are unreliable in many respects: deciphering the handwriting; determining the beginning, end, and order of the sermons; inserting deletions; and deleting sentences. The most complex finding in this examination is that Esh Kodesh was built layer by layer, indicating that the dating of the sermons that appears in print cannot be trusted. Thus, new and more complex research is required in order to reach more decisive implications in understanding the Rebbe’s outlook on suffering.

On the sanctification of East European foods served at the Chasidic Rebbe's Tish, or Shabbes table. Stranger than fiction, but this is not a Haskalah satire. The sources are all authentic Hasidic sources, including those explaining how the Tsadik (Rebbe) = Yesod (the Divine phallus, as represented among the 10 Kabbalistic Sefirot = KUGEL, so do not eat it with your hands !!! Gives entirely new meaning to Pey-Tsadik…..,

How I convince my then editor at the Forward to publish a review of a book not yet translated into English is a ,long story. Let's just say that the few examples of the rich material in this amazingly original (and quite damning) work of serious scholarship, largely about Mystics Gone Mad, or Hilarious Hasidic History, she said, WHEN CAN YOU GET IT TO ME ?

These are amazing stories. 

And yet, this is a work of formidable scholarship !

Unlike "Shivkhey ha-Besht" and that massive literature of "Rebbeshi Nisim ve-nifloes" collected  by Berger in his 4 volume anthology, to say nothing of the tales of Buber and Wiesel, this strange stuff really happened.

Hasidic Art and the Kabbalah presents eight case studies of manuscripts, ritual objects, and folk art developed by Hasidic masters in the mid-eighteenth to late nineteenth centuries, whose form and decoration relate to sources in the Zohar, German Pietism, and Safed Kabbalah. Examined at the delicate and difficult to define interface between seemingly simple, folk art and complex ideological and conceptual outlooks which contain deep, abstract symbols, the study touches on aspects of object history, intellectual history, the decorative arts, and the history of religion. Based on original texts, the focus of this volume is on the subjective experience of the user at the moment of ritual, applying tenets of process philosophy and literary theory – Wolfgang Iser, Gaston Bachelard, and Walter Benjamin – to the analysis of objects. Michael Levi Rodkinson (1845–1904) was a journalist, author, and publisher whose literary projects spanned numerous countries and continents. Hero to some and scoundrel to others, Rodkinson was a polemical figure whose beliefs underwent many transformations over the course of his life, most significantly from Hasidism to combative Haskalah to eventually anticipating the neo-Romantic trends of the early twentieth century. The lecture will discuss portrayals of Eastern European Hasidism as "pure mysticism" in the writings of Martin Buber (especially his early stories about R. Nahman of Bratslav and the Baal Shem Tov), as well as the reception of such portrayals by non-Jews and mystics in Eastern Europe in the first half of the twentieth century. Many scholars have already analyzed the romantic picture painted by Buber, but without sufficient attention paid to the responses of Hasidim and other Eastern European thinkers to that picture. It seems that at precisely the time that Buber was holding up a form of "pure Hasidism" in contradistinction to the contemporary movement - which, in his opinion, had become stagnant -- a profound renaissance was in fact occurring in Eastern European Hasidism. Not only were Buber's portrayals disconnected from historical reality, he will fully ignored the Hasidic renaissance happening at the time. The lecture will discuss briefly the responses of a few Eastern European thinkers and scholars who contested Buber's description, while focusing on the unique response of the Warsaw mystic Hillel Zeitlin.

This course will delve into the major moments of Bratslav Hasidism from its founding through the Holocaust. Through a study of central texts in Hasidism we will evaluate the daring theological picture that negotiated change in relation to a shifting reality. In the first semester we will read from the works of R. Nahman of Bratslav and R. Nathan of Nemirov, and in the second we will study the development of Hasidism through the twentieth century.

The lecture will focus on the exception figure of Hillel Zeitlin (1871–1942), as part of the Renaissance of the Jewish Mysticism in Poland at the beginning of the twentieth Century. We will analyze the messianic visions of Zeitlin in the context of modern Jewish thought and compere his philosophy to William James, Nietzsche, Abraham Joshua Heschel, and Martin Buber.

【講演要旨】
本講演は、20世紀初頭のポーランドにおけるユダヤ神秘主義ルネッサンスの一部として、ヒレル・ツァイトリン(1871-1942)という特異な人物に焦点をあてる。近代ユダヤ思想の文脈のなかで彼のメシア的ビジョンを分析し、またウィリアム・ジェイムズ、ニーチェ、アブラハム・ヨシュア・ヘッシェル、マルティン・ブーバーらと彼の哲学を比較してゆきたい。

【講師略歴】
エルサレム・ヘブライ大学およびネゲヴ・ベングリオン大学において研究助手、助教を務めたのち、2011年より現職。専門は東欧ユダヤ史、ユダヤ神秘主義、ハスカラー、ハシディズムおよび現代カバラー。主要著作にRabbi Nahman of Bratslav: World Weariness and Longing for the Messiah (2006), Kabbalah and Exotericism in Jerusalem (2011), Imagined Hasidism: The Anti-Hasidic Writings of Joseph Perl (2013)など。

Prof. Jonatan Meir of Ben-Gurion University discussed Chasidic Hebrew and the Rise of the New Hebrew Literature. The presentation focused on the social, religious, and linguistic background of three major Chasidic texts: שבחי הבעש"ט (an 1814 hagiographic text), סיפורי מעשיות (an 1816 collection of tales by Rabbi Nachman of Breslov in Yiddish and Hebrew), and מגלה טמירין, an 1819 anti-Chasidic satire written by Yosef Perl. Social, literary and linguistic characteristics of these texts were compared with Haskala texts
