Phokis

The paper deals with the results of the third consecutive season of excavations in the Late Helladic site of Kastrouli, southern Phokis, during summer 2018. Excavations resumed and concluded in the Building 1, which dates in the LH IIIC Early. Research has been conducted as well in three more buildings (2a, 2b, 3), and in the looted chamber Tomb B. A survey in the plane of Miteles identified drainage works of later dates, which however may represent improvements and adaptation of works conceived already in the Mycenaean times. Finally, some considerations are advanced on the labour investment for the Kastrouli fortifications and its implications for its population calculation, and a brief overview of the results achieved thus far by the entire project.

The paper presents a new inscription mentioning a dekaprotos from Antikyra, in Phokis, dated around the middle of the 3rd century AD. The office of dekaprotos is examined in its historical perspective with a review of all available sources. The paper tries to closer identify the function of the officials denoted as dekaprotoi in the Roman East, as well as their relationship to the decemprmi and decuriones in the Roman West. It readjusts the dates of introduction and abolishment of the institution, discusses the terms and members’ number of the office, and makes several additions to its already known geographical spread.

In this chapter we will concentrate our account on the Phocian and Theban military commanders: the Phocians Philomelos, Onomarchos, Phayllos and Phalaecos and the Thebans Gorgidas, Pelopidas, Epameinondas, Pammenes and Lacrates. This is one of the best ways of examining the true nature of military command and the conditions in which it was exercised in the broad area that extends from the frontiers of Attica to the farthest limits of Macedonia. These leaders, their achievements, the setbacks they suffered and the innovations they instigated or provoked affected not only the states they fought, that is to say, in terms of foreign policy, but can also be understood, at least in part, within the framework of the states they lived in, i.e., the domestic situation. That is, their political and military command ultimately brought about a profound transformation of their own states. And so, while it was a polis, Thebes, that effectively came to replace the Boiotian Confederacy, Phocis was a forerunner of what would be common in the Hellenistic Era: a dynasty of warlords, their friends (philoi) and their military forces (dynameis) that came to virtually replace the Federal State.

According to Herodotus (8.27-28), the Thessalians and their allies with all their military power had undertaken an incursion into the Phocians’ area. During this conflict the Phocians had been locked up on Parnassus, and Tellias, a seer of Elis, suggested to them that 600 of the bravest Phocians should colour themselves and their armour with chalk and surprise the Thessalians at night-time. The Thessalians were frightened and lost. In scholarship the ruse of the chalk has often been put into a context of the Orphic-Dionysian complex of myths and rituals (Müller) and/or it has been considered as a representation of a dead army, having the function of a ruse (Weniger, Henrichs). In this perspective, it has mostly been interpreted as an initiation rite (Harrison, Jeanmaire, West). This paper explores instead the link with a complex of oracular tales predicting migration and people displacement. In these tales the appearance of birds marked by chalk misled and threatened people competing for a country to live in. The outcome marks the origin of this people so much so that these oracular tales functioned as origin stories.

Selon Hérodote (VIII, 27-28), lors du conflit entre les Thessaliens et les Phocidiens, Tellias, devin d’Élée, suggéra aux Phocidiens, retranchés sur le Parnasse, que six cents parmi les plus braves se blanchissent avec de la chaux, eux et leurs armures, afin de surprendre les Thessaliens en pleine nuit. Pour les spécialistes de l’Antiquité, la ruse de la chaux a été interprétée soit dans le contexte des rituels et des mythes orphiques-dionysiaques (Müller), soit dans le contexte de la guerre rusée, les soldats prenant l’aspect de morts (Weniger, Henrichs). Dans cette perspective, la ruse a aussi été surtout interprétée comme un rite d’initiation (Harrison, Jeanmaire, West). Cette contribution explore, au contraire, le lien avec un ensemble de contes oraculaires prédisant émigration et déplacement de populations. Dans ces contes, l’apparition d’oiseaux marqués par la chaux avait pour fonction de menacer des gens en compétition pour la même région. La question de l’origine de ces populations concernées était tellement centrale dans les contes oraculaires, que ces derniers fonctionnaient comme des mythes des origines

Die antiken Quellen berichten von einer alten und lang andauernden Feindschaft zwischen Thessalern und Phokern, die „von Anbeginn“ im Konflikt miteinander gestanden haben sollen. Die ersten Streitigkeiten sollen auf die Zeit der Einwanderung der Thessaler in ihr Siedlungsgebiet zurückgehen; später kämpften Thessaler und Phoker in weiteren Kriege in größeren Koalitionen gegeneinander, vor allem im sogenannten 1. wie im 3. Heiligen Krieg. Zur Zeit dieses letzteren Krieges erlebten die Phoker ihren spektakulärsten Aufstieg und Niedergang: In der öffentlichen Debatte kam es damals zu einer starken Umdeutung der archaischen Konflikte gegen die Thessaler und damit der phokischen Vergangenheit, die wiederum von der Erinnerungskultur des 4. Jh.s geprägt war. Das vorliegende Buch versucht, diese Geschichte der phokisch-thessalischen Kriege und der Phoker im allgemeinen jenseits dieser Umdeutung zu rekonstruieren. Dabei werden die komplexen historischen, archäologischen, religionsgeschichtlichen und anthropologischen Fragen, die diese Konflikte aufwerfen, untersucht.

Delphes et Médéon étaient des cités situées dans le sud de la Phocide dont on pourrait penser qu'elles étaient assez similaires. En fait, leur histoire fut très différente et les relations qu'elles entretenaient paraissent avoir été pauvres. Delphes domine une vallée fortement occupée par de grands sites à l'Age du Bronze qui furent tous abandonnés ou en partie délaissés au profit de Delphes au moment des grandes destructions vers 1200. En revanche, Médéon subsista sans solution de continuité. Après cette période troublée, l'étude comparée de la céramique montre des relations différentes au cours des Xe et IXe s., avec une ouverture plus grande de Médéon sur la mer et des relations avec la Locride occidentale et la Béotie, tandis que Delphes est orientée vers la Thessalie et l'Eubée. Les modes funéraires montrent également une rupture plus grande entre Médéon et le Nord que ce qu'on peut observer à Delphes.

Με την ανακάλυψη των επιγραφών αποδεικνύεται και ο λοκρικός χαρακτήρας της Ποτιδάνειας και της περιοχής της (τα ονόματα των μαρτύρων της απελευθέρωσης είναι συχνά στην περιοχή μεταξύ Αμφίσσας και Αντιρρίου) –και το όριο του «εθνικού πυρήνα» του Αιτωλικού έθνους μετατοπίζεται προς Βορράν.

The dossier about the wars between Thessalians and Phokians also includes two very fragmentary inscriptions found in Delphi: Syll.3 202B and Syll.3 203A. The French and German epigraphists who edited them in the first half of referred to by Herodotus (8.27-28), Pausanias (10.1.3-11) and Plutarch (mul.virt. 2). In recent times, scholars have become more cautious because of the large amount of lacunae in the inscriptions that were rather freely restored in the past. On the other hand, this caution runs the risk of hypercriticism and goes hand in hand with a strict separation of historical remarks on the one side, and epigraphical ones, on the other side. This paper first tries to look for further clues by closely comparing Syll.3 202B and Syll.3 203A with other Phokian inscriptions found in Delphi, Kalapodi, Panopeus and Elateia. The paper then aims to combine the epigraphical approach with the historical one and to strike a balance between hypercriticism and positivistic inferences. A close consideration of the history of fourth-century Phokis confirms the results of a strict epigraphical analysis and provides further evidence supporting the restorations proposed by nineteenth-century epigraphists: Syll.3 202B and Syll.3 203A most probably date back to the fourth century but commemorate the archaic Thessalian-Phokian battles.

Il dossier sulla conflittualità tessalo-focidese comprende tradizionalmente oltre ad alcune fonti letterarie due epigrafi delfiche alquanto lacunose: Syll.3 202B e Syll.3 203A. I primi editori non hanno esitato a connetterle alle battaglie arcaiche descritte da Erodoto (VIII 27-28), Pausania (X 1, 3-11) e Plutarco (mul.virt. 2). Di recente è prevalso un atteggiamento di cautela suggerito soprattutto dalle pesanti integrazioni con le quali in passato si è intervenuto talora con disinvoltura eccessiva. D’altro canto questa cautela sconfina in certi casi in una deriva ipercritica che va di pari passo con una rigida separazione tra considerazioni epigrafiche da un lato e considerazioni storiche dall’altro, a discapito delle seconde. Questo studio si propone in primo luogo di riesaminare le due iscrizioni da un punto di vista epigrafico, comparandole con iscrizioni rinvenute a Delfi, Kalapodi, Elatea e Panopeo; in secondo luogo di riconsiderarle in un quadro complessivo cercando un equilibrio tra la suggestiva ma meccanica connessione di testimonianze epigrafiche e letterarie da un lato e l’ipercriticismo dall’altro. La combinazione di considerazioni di ordine epigrafico con un esame della storia delle Focide così come è riflessa nelle fonti letterarie di IV secolo e in quelle successive rende assai probabile l’ipotesi per cui le due epigrafi risalgano al IV secolo ma commemorino una vittoria arcaica sui Tessali.

A panel of 13 Greek coinages thoroughly studied through a die-study has been taking into account to calculate the frequency of the different provenances. These 13 coinages are: Velia, Camarina (Kamarina), Gela, Messana (Messina), Hieronymos of Syracuse, Philip II of Macedonia, Amphipolis, the Phocians (Phokians), Chalcis, Philetairus (Philetairos), Miletus, Cnidus (Knidos) and Samos. The largest coin cabinets for Greek coins are for this sample : Berlin, London, Paris, New York, Cambridge, Oxford, Wien, etc. Dealing with rarer isues (also well known through a die-study: Evainetos for Syracuse, the Amphictionic coinage at Delphi, the Arkadian league, Pheneus and Lebedus [Lebedos]): the order is now: Berlin, Paris, London, New York, Boston, Cambridge, Brussels, LIsbon, etc.
