Corrupted by a thirst for power, degenerated courtiers, cruel appetite, and bloody imperialistic ambition, Philip V of Macedonia has been for a long time the paradigm of Hellenistic kingship. Moving beyond the surface of vice, rivalry and murder, this book follows a web of alliances and conflicts between the ruler and other political actors vying for power or fighting for independence from it. Their aspirations become increasingly interwoven: a struggle in the Macedonian court for control of the military and political leadership; the threat of the Aitolians, the Dardanians and the Illyrians, who dwell in north and central Greece; and the goals of the Achaian leader Aratos and the exiled dynast Demetrios of Pharos.
The rise to the throne of Philip V of Macedonia offers a unique case study for a situational, synthetic, and holistic study of the fluid Hellenistic political system. The abundance and quality of the literary and documentary evidence close or contemporary with the events are a magnifying glass with which to approach the shifting relations between the expression and the exercise of authority. Considering Philip V’s dynastic ties, court politics, military innovations, diplomatic relations and administrative reforms, the volume collects and examines information, details, and names in order to investigate the king’s agenda. It provides an event-based analysis of the power management in Macedonia, Greece and the Balkans in the crucial years that changed the history of the Mediterranean (229-212 BC). Ultimately the aim of this analysis of Philip V’s agency is to contribute to a new understanding of the first collision between Rome and the Hellenistic East, fostering the discussion on the political and military dialogue in the Mediterranean of the following years.

Felipe V, lejos de imitar a sus antepasados Borbones o continuar con el modelo establecido por los reyes españoles, alteró significativamente el modo en cómo un soberano de Antiguo Régimen debía ejercer sus responsabilidades públicas. Con el fin de satisfacer las demandas de sus numerosas inclinaciones personales, el nuevo monarca promovió la creación de una esfera privada en el seno de la corte y permitió que su segunda mujer, la reina Isabel de Farnesio, incrementara su autoridad pública y su influencia a la hora de administrar la potestad regia. Este volumen analiza, en consecuencia, cómo la cultura cortesana española se vio alterada durante las tres primeras décadas del siglo XVIII promoviendo con ello el nacimiento y consolidación de una nueva idea y práctica de la majestad.

This article explores the relationship between the Greeks, Macedonians and Romans through the prism of Polybius of Megalopolis and his Histories in the second century BC. It throws light on how a Greek might control and construct the image of larger powers to explain political change and assert or deny them political and cultural legitimacy, while at the same time proclaiming the continued importance of Hellenic culture. It investigates Polybius’ construction and use of Hellenism in his Histories and demonstrates how he deliberately interchanged the trajectories of Macedon and Rome to offer an ideological explanation for Rome’s rise and Macedon’s fall, to assert that the preservation of the Greeks lay with Rome not Macedon, to protect the standing of the Achaean League, and to emphasise the importance of Hellenic virtues for success on the domestic and international scenes.

En este libro se estudia cómo se produjeron las provisiones de cargos para servir en América durante el reinado de Felipe V (1701-1746). Partiendo de una clasificación novedosa de los tipos de designaciones y de un uso concienzudo de documentación de diversa naturaleza, este trabajo analiza en primer lugar las atribuciones de las instituciones implicadas en el nombramiento del personal de la administración indiana para, posteriormente, adentrarse en el funcionamiento de los engranajes de las mismas y en los actores participantes a la hora de elegir a quienes en nombre del rey debían gobernar en los distintos ramos del aparato estatal de la Monarquía en Ultramar.
Partiendo del estudio minucioso de 3.000 nombramientos, se presenta una visión de cuáles fueron las motivaciones principales que llevaron a que un individuo se hiciese con un puesto en América, poniendo en evidencia hasta qué punto el buen gobierno de aquellos reinos quedó supeditado a otras necesidades que acuciaban al monarca en Europa y que poco tenían que ver con la búsqueda de una gestión eficaz de las inmensas Indias.

RESUMEN: La formación de las colecciones reales españolas se nutrió en gran medida de piezas importadas de otros territorios, especialmente de Italia en el caso de las antigüedades. La compra e importación de estos materiales no era una tarea sencilla y, por ello, España se valió de sus agentes en las diferentes zonas para poder completar estos acuerdos. Esto provocó grandes gastos en la cada vez más maltrecha economía
hispánica.

ABSTRACT: The Spanish royal collections were greatly created by imported pieces from other regions, especially from Italy in the case of antiques. The purchase and import of these materials was not an easy task and, therefore, Spain used its diplomats among different areas in order to fulfill these agreements. This provoked serious expenses in the increasingly Spanish battered economy.

Durante el reinado de Felipe V (1683-1746) y de Isabel de Farnesio (1692-1766), los principales palacios de la corona contaron con estancias decoradas con piezas orientales procedentes de China y de Japón, junto a otras de factura europea que imitaban las producciones asiáticas. Gracias al estudio de distintas obras conservadas y al hallazgo de nuevos documentos se ha podido profundizar en el conocimiento de la cronología, la procedencia y la tipología de las obras orientales con las que los reyes ornamentaron sus residencias y el contexto en que se presentaron.

During the reign of King Philip V (1683-1746) and Queen Elisabeth Farnese (1692-1766) the most important palaces of the Spanish crown started to be decorated with East Asian objects from China and Japan, together with high quality imitations of oriental styles produced in European workshops. Thanks to the study of a variety of pieces still preserved in Spain and new archival information, this research deepens our understanding about how East Asian objects d’art where used and displayed by the court to ornate their palaces.

"The study focuses on the presentation of letters dated between November and December 1709 among the administrators of the Court of Marquis of Castelldosrius, viceroy of Peru, and reliable
people for the king. The aim was to negotiate an extension on the Marquis government of Peru and a pardon of charges of corruption maid against him. W e should set this important venal operation in a period of heavy sales of offices and honors that were motivated by the need of the Crown to obtain large sums of money to cover the expenses of the War of Succession."

Thanks to the study of a variety of pieces still preserved in Spain, as well as new archival information, this research deepens our understanding of how East Asian objets d'art were used and displayed by the court to decorate their palaces.

This research aims to show a methodological approach to certain key elements in order to understand the granting of honours and offices in return for services and money. This is particularly necessary because it was very common to hide and conceal the pecuniary services; especially, in the army, in justice related positions and, in honours such as the titles of Castile. It is very important to understand and differentiate between granting honours and offices by means of money and doing it by means of services. As highlighted in other studies, the lack of information about these two routes and about the legislation, together with the superficial analysis of the documentation has led to misinterpretations.

La creación del reino de las Dos Sicilias tras la guerra de Sucesión de Polonia no ha sido lo suficientemente bien estudiada por la historiografía española. Habría que esperar a la llegada a España  de Carlos III a Barcelona en 1759 para volver a encontrar un interés sobre la influencia napolitana en la corte madrileña. Es cierto que ya se ha destacado la influencia italiana en la corte de los Borbones españoles como uno de los bagajes esenciales de los matrimonios “italianos” de Felipe V.
En el trabajo que les propongo quiero hacer hincapié en un aspecto que me parece poco conocido de la historia político-cultural de la capital del nuevo reino del sur de la península itálica. Nápoles se convierte a principios de los años cuarenta del siglo XVIII en un centro de iniciativas políticas internacionales que influyen en la política mediterránea hispánica: la búsqueda de la paz con el Imperio Otomano siguiendo la vía trazada por el propio reino de las Dos Sicilias el representante de España en Nápoles propone a la corte que se firme un acuerdo de paz entre España y Estambul. Esta propuesta venida desde la capital italiana fue escuchada con atención en la corte, como lo demuestran los importantes manuscritos en los que los diferentes capitanes generales de las zonas mediterráneas ibéricas evaluaron esta propuesta. Pero lo que más me va a interesar en este trabajo es mostrar cómo esta propuesta fue acompañada, por parte de los servicios de la embajada napolitana en Nápoles, con el envío de obras de arte que pudieran influir en la decisión española. Es el caso, por ejemplo, del cuadro de Giuseppe Bonito, Embajada turca en Nápoles en 1741, expuesto hoy en el museo del Prado o de otros muchos cuadros de tema otomano o magrebí de las colecciones reales de los Borbones españoles.
Mi objetivo en este trabajo es seguir la pista de estos cuadros de tema otomano o “oriental” en las colecciones de Felipe V, sobre todo, y poner en relación estas obras con las políticas mediterráneas de los Borbones hispanos e italianos. Me parece interesante ver cómo la imagen del otomano o del musulmán, en el siglo XVIII, pasa por Italia, y Nápoles, al menos durante la primera mitad del siglo ilustrado.

This work focuses in the Council of the Indies attitude towards the sale of appointments during Philip V’s reign. This entitlement’s method has its origins in the first halve of the 17th century. It meant a hard stroke against Council’s power on appointments’ assignments. Its strong moral implications arouse a bitter discourse against this practice in the American Government’s institution.
