Pariah

Abraham Serfaty is renowned internationally and in his Moroccan homeland for his Marxist oppositional dissidence (directed against French colonialism and subsequently homegrown Moroccan repression), his almost two decades of political imprisonment, and his complex positioning as an anti-Zionist Moroccan and Jew. Based on my interviews and Serfaty’s writings, this essay explores not only his self-definitions as an “Arab Jew” and insoumi but also the many ways Serfaty’s life shares features with the figure of a Jewish conscious pariah, a concept owed to Bernard Lazare and Hannah Arendt.

A zsidók és keresztények közötti egyenlőtlenségek kialakulására több társadalomtudományos magyarázat is rendelkezésünkre áll. Az egyik legismertebb és leghosszabb múltra visszatekintő elmélet a modern zsidó sikert a zsidók emancipáció előtti kívülállóságára, azaz pária helyzetére vezeti vissza, amely sajátos üzleti stílust eredményezett. A tanulmány arra vállalkozik, hogy kidolgozza a tézis keletkezésének németországi, majd formálódásának magyarországi történetét. A marxi előzmények bemutatása után Webernek és Sombartnak a modern kapitalista szellem születéséről folytatott vitáját elemzem, amelyben megszületett a páriakapitalizmus fogalma. A polémia során a két tudós abban egyetértett, hogy a zsidó érvényesülés a zsidók idegenségében gyökerezik, ugyanis elzárkózásuk kettős morál kialakulásához vezetett, ez pedig a külvilággal fenntartott kapcsolatokban létrehozta a jellegzetes zsidó üzleti kíméletlenséget. Magyarországon Hajnal István illesztette be történetírásába a páriakapitalizmus sombarti-weberi koncepcióját. Hajnal a zsidó sikertörténetet, tehát – értelmezésében – az idegenek könnyű érvényesülését, arra használta, hogy ezzel feltárja a kelet-közép-európai társadalomfejlődés szerkezeti hibáit. A holokauszt után ez az elbeszélés – mivel erkölcsi ítéletet is mondott a zsidókról – elvesztette érvényességét. A páriakapitalizmus fogalmát Magyarországon Bibó István fosztotta meg kegyeletsértő jellegétől. Innen kiindulva Hanák Péter alkotott kerek történeti elbeszélést a kitaszítottsága miatt sikerre ítélt zsidóról, rajzolta meg immár Weber puritánjának mintájára a magyar kapitalizmus zsidó előfutárának portréját. Végül azt latolgatom, lehet-e a páriakapitalizmus elméletének ma is érvényes tanulsága a zsidó siker történeti értelmezésében.

Otorite sisteminin kurumlaştığı toplumsal yapılarda cellat son derece yaygın bir toplumsal figür olarak ortaya çıkmaktadır. Hem merkezileşmiş kabile toplumlarında hem de daha kompleks bir örgütlenmeye sahip olan büyük devlet yapılarında cellatların Simmel’in yabancı ve Max Weber’in parya konseptleriyle ele aldıkları toplumsal kesimlerin mensupları arasından seçilmesi sıkça görülen bir durumdur. Bu çalışmada Osmanlı İmparatorluğu’nda cellatların yabancı / parya sınıflandırması ile ele alınabilecek toplumsal kesimlerden seçilmelerine ilişkin kronikler
ve seyyahların anlatılarından derlenmiş örnekler paylaşılmakta, çağdaşı ve selefleri gibi Osmanlı İmparatorluğu’nun da cellat temini pratiklerinde yabancı/parya topluluklara yönelmesini belirleyen dinamikler sosyo-tarihsel arka plan temel alınarak tartışma konusu yapılmaktadır.

Executioners were common social figures in societies of institutionalized power structures. It was a common practice that many of them were recruited from among the members of social groups which were discussed by Simmel and Weber in the context of the stranger and pariah concepts respectively in both centralized tribal communities and more complex state
structures. In this study, the samples, collected from chronicles and narratives of travelers, reflecting the fact that executioners were sometimes recruited from among the groups which can be classified as stranger/pariah are presented and the dynamics determining the Ottoman
Empire’s intention, like its predecessors and contemporaries, to employ the stranger/pariah communities as its executioners considering socio-historical background are discussed.

In the post-1857 colonial era, the Indian social and legal landscape underwent a seismic shift, caused by evermore direct and forceful British rule in many spheres of life, including human-animal and gender relations. This paper provides a brief analysis of this shift through the prism of colonial control of both human and canine pariahs in the Raj, which was fraught with conflicts, debates and moral crises. Since early colonial times, the word 'pariah' in the English language has come to denote any person or animal that is generally despised or avoided. It is derived from the Paraiyar (sing. Paraiyan), a low-caste group found in the southernmost part of the Indian subcontinent, which probably owes its name to the Tamil word for a drum (parai). For British colonial masters, however, the word 'pariah' was applicable to all of the lowest Indian castes, gender and human outcasts in general and, curiously perhaps, to India's street dogs. The inherent complexity in the making of the colonial subject-be it the gendered, classed and racialised 'human' or, indeed, the non-human 'animal'-is an often acknowledged fact, which certainly might pose a challenge for historical comparativists. This brief article takes up that challenge and, in doing so, proposes an unorthodox look into the social and political aspects of 'pariahdom' in postcolonial studies and beyond. It simultaneously discusses the word 'pariah' in a somewhat trans-historical context-one in which its curious 'social etymology' and cross-cultural and cross-species semantics point out a type of exclusionary human consciousness.

Strategiar i møte med eit ekskluderande samfunn: Innsikter frå Hannah Arendt
Korleis bør ein møte eit ekskluderande samfunn? Dette spørsmålet illustrerer eit tema som diverre er tidlaust. Alltid i historia har det eksistert grupper som har vore ekskluderte og undertrykka av fleirtalet i samfunnet. Kva er den riktige strategien for dei som utgjer utanforståande minoritetar i eit samfunn? Korleis kan dei endre sin utsette posisjon?
Denne teksten ser på desse spørsmåla gjennom ei lesing av ulike tekstar av Hannah Arendt, og synleggjer ein strategi som ofte går under radaren: Parvenyen, som freister å verte akseptert av det ekskluderande samfunnet gjennom å fremstille seg sjølve som eksepsjonell og betre enn sine frendar, ved å bidra til demoniseringa av den minoriteten hen kjem frå, ein strategi Arendt fann hjå jødane, men som også kan finnast hjå til dømes afrikanske amerikanarar og blant såkalla eks-muslimar i vestlege land.

A presente resenha busca discutir a obra cinebiografia Papusza, suas interpretações e possíveis contribuições para o meio acadêmico e reflexões sobre as temáticas abordadas. Pretende expor a trajetória da poetisa cigana Papusza e juntamente com isso um pouco da história cigana do século XX. A obra traz diversas aberturas para possíveis campos de pesquisa e temáticas para a reflexão que perpassam gênero, trabalho, educação, minorias entre outros.

In this article I use Arendt’s thinking in order to explore the concept of barbarism. For this purpose, I start by scrutinizing the original meaning of the word and further I compare it with Arendt’s understanding of the pariah and its own concept of “Worldlessness”. After, I examine how the refugees are depicted as a kind of contemporary barbarians, who
are devoid of rights and whose logos is not properly recognized. Finally, I tackle the matter of barbarism from the perspective of the “Worldlessness”, which is caused by the rise of the social and derives to the loss of the relational dimension of people.

Résumé. Depuis son émergence en 2006, produit de la marginalisation brutale des Arabes sunnites en Irak, l’État islamique a orienté sa propagande et son recrutement autour de la notion d’humiliation, appelant une revanche. De ses publications aux chants belliqueux entonnés par ses combattants dans les territoires conquis, la prétention du « califat » autoproclamé à offrir un refuge à tous les « parias » de l’ordre mondial est une dimension décisive à la compréhension de sa puissance, aussi bien militaire qu’idéologique, comme de sa faculté à se régénérer sur le temps long. Sans prendre en considération cette dimension symbolique et la mobilisation qu’elle articule, la stratégie de lutte contre l’expansion djihadiste est un vain mot.

En este trabajo analizaremos cómo se originó la asimilación judía en el contexto de la emancipación de este pueblo en la Alemania de finales del siglo XVIII y de comienzos del XIX. Para llevar a cabo este proceso explicaremos, siguiendo a Hannah Arendt, cómo surgió el concepto del pueblo judío como pueblo paria. Para luego examinar a dos modelos de judíos concretos planteados por la filósofa alemana, el judío definido como advenedizo o parvenu y su contrapartida, el paria consciente. Con este fin nos centraremos en las obras tempranas de Arendt escritas en la década de 1930, La asimilación original. Un epílogo con motivo del primer centenario de la muerte de Rahel Varnhagen; Salón Berlinés; Rahel Varnhagen. Vida de una mujer judía, además de su primera gran obra, escrita dos décadas más tarde, Los orígenes del totalitarismo.
