"The so-called Cloister of the Martyrs of the Monastery of San Pedro de Cardeña highlights the ways in which the chronology and construction of a work of art can be distorted according to diverse interests at different times in history. The quest for the prestige granted by great age and for the profit garnered through
the cult allowed the monks of Cardeña to benefit both in the late Middle Ages and in the Early Modern period, moments in which they made use of their tragic history. The convergence of these occurences with much that we see in the present day should serve as a warning against the perennial temptation in Western civilization to demonize the minority cultures within."
