Parade

Throughout history, the Seleucid military might demonstrated
many times its importance for the maintenance, expansion and defense of the Empire. Rarely the Seleucid army was defeated in a campaign and it happened in front of the almighty Rome. After the defeat at Thermopylae and Magnesia, and following the imminent withdrawal must conquer the Ptolemaic Empire, the new king Antiochus IV Epiphanes held a military parade as never been done before, its real purpose is unknown, but the Seleucids showed the world the power that still had the Empire. Through the stories of several classic sources, we can come closer to this event and what
it could entail.

L'articolo ricostruisce su base documentaria i rapporti fra l'editore e scrittore d'arte italiano residente a Parigi Gualtieri di San Lazzaro (1904-1974) con il gallerista veneziano Carlo Cardazzo. Questo scambio dà come risultato una serie di mostre presso le galleria del Naviglio (Milano), del Cavallino (Venezia) e Selcta (Roma), riguardanti l'opera grafica di Kandinsky, la pittura di Serge Poliakoff, Atlan, Hartung, Michaux, Jean Arp e Sonia Delaunay (esito fallimentare, invece, avrà il tentativo di fare una mostra di Fautrier), oltre a rnedere possibili le mostre di Fontana e Capogrossi a Parigi presso la sede della rivista "XXeme Siècle", diretta da San Lazzaro. Ma questo rapporto consente anche altre operazioni, coem la vendita del sipario dipinto da Picasso nel 1917 per Parade. This study created and field tested a density count method to analytically estimate the number of spectators attending parades. Literature review revealed an earlier suggested method to estimate attendance at parades, but no indication of it ever being assessed in the field was uncovered. Additional literature, more focused on other types of large open festivals, provided further empirical insight into estimating attendance at events in general. The study began with trials and fieldwork to establish basic physical space requirements of spectators, as well as the total available square footage of viewing area along a parade route, in order to ascertain the maximum possible attendance as a control on final attendance approximations. 2020 marks the tenth anniversary of the Barrydale Giant Puppet Parade, a large-scale, experimental annual public puppetry event and performance in a small rural town in the Klein Karoo of South Africa. This multifaceted, collaborative puppet theatre-making process, which results annually in the creation of a parade and large-scale original performance, is co-organized by Net Vir Pret (a children’s school aftercare non-profit organisation based in the town of Barrydale) and the Laboratory of Kinetic Objects (LoKO) at the Centre for Humanities Research at the University of the Western Cape (CHR@UWC). The following conversation between the author (a Theatre Research Fellow at the CHR@UWC and creative director of the parade since 2014) and Sudonia Kouter (the Net vir Pret Aftercare manager and a key artistic contributor in the parade creative and directing teams) explores some of the experiences of meaning-making that arise in such a multi-layered and ambitious project.
