Ottoman history and historiography

Ivan Illich, Gölge İş kitabında “Bir tarihçi olarak tamamen yeni olma iddiası taşıyan her şeye şüpheyle yaklaşırım. Bir fikrin öncüllerini tespit edemezsem, derhal bunun aptalca bir fikir olduğundan şüphe ederim. Eğer geçmişte yaşamış insanlardan tanışık olduğum ve hayalimde beni şaşırtan şey hakkında tartışabileceğim birisini bulamazsam kendimi son derece yalnız ve bugünkü kısıtlı ufkuma mahkûm kalmış hissederim” der.  Mustafa Oral da Illich çizgisini tarihçilik, tarih anlayışı, tarih yazımı ve tarihsel düşünce bağlamında Osmanlı döneminden meşrutiyete, meşrutiyetten cumhuriyete sürdürüyor.

Mustafa Oral, bu önemli kitabında Kıta Avrupası ile İslâm ve Osmanlı dünyasında tarihçilik geleneğini ve tarihsel düşüncesini ilmek ilmek işliyor, tarihçiler ve eserleri üzerinden yeniden tartışmaya açıyor. Aydınlanma ile ortaya çıkan epistemolojik bağlamın tarih / tarihçilik anlayışına ve düşüncesine yaptığı katkıyı hem Avrupa özelinde hem de Osmanlı örneğinde alt bağlamları ile okura sunuyor. Meşrutiyetten cumhuriyete tarihçilik geleneğinde ve tarih düşüncesinde değişim ve sürekliliği, Avrupası düşüncesi ile girilen etkileşimin satır aralarını anlamaya ve anlatmaya çalışıyor.

Romantik tarihçiler geçmişi tarihsel roman yazarlarının etkisiyle heyecan verici, siyaset kuramcılarının etkisiyle Fransız Devrimi ile bozulan siyasi istikrarın yeniden sağlanmasının aracı olarak gördüler. Romantiklere göre tarih, yaşanılan zamanın kurumlarını gerçekten anlamak ve değerlendirmek amacına yönelik olmalıdır. Bunun için geçmişe değer verilmeli ve onu korumalıdır. Bu tarih görüşü, Ortaçağa karşı belirgin bir ilgi de uyandırdı. Bu tarih anlayışının etkisi ile Ortaçağ tarihçileri geçmişi, verimli ve parlak bir tarihsel dönem olarak değerlendirmeye başladılar. Romantik tarih anlayışı, rasyonalist tarih görüşüne bir tepki olarak gelişti. Elinizdeki kitap, bu coğrafya için önemli dönüm noktalarından olan meşrutiyet yıllarında Osmanlı modernleşmesinin, Batıda egemen olan romantik tarih söylemi ile nasıl etkileşime girdiğini ve cumhuriyet ideolojisine evrildiğini gözler önüne seriyor.

The main purpose of this study is to present a summary of new approaches developed by
Ottoman historians concerning the Ottoman sharia court records (also known as sicils)
since the 1990s. Both the well-received studies based on the sharia court records and the
critical historiographical essays published on the limitations of these records demonstrate
that the court records have been used up until now in the service of three main
approaches. 1) The Structuralist Approach in which the vast amount of data the sicils
contain is qualified in order to evaluate social and economic structures. In this phase,
starting from the 1960s to the mid-1990s, the court records were primarily used to explore
long-durée structural patterns in the society and economy and to write the holistic history
of the various regions, provinces, and cities. 2) By the mid-1990s, however, the sicil-based
historiography gradually took its “cultural turn” through considering and critically
appropriating some of the questions and approaches developed within the poststructural
readings. 3) By the turn of the twenty-first century, while the “cultural turn” is still in effect,
some Ottoman historians started to read the court records “sociolegally.” The sociolegal
readings of the court records are very much nurtured by cultural approaches and discursive
analysis yet it has one marked difference: the use of quantitative analysis. In this work,
these approaches are examined thoroughly by considering certain turning points and
landmarks in the field and how they shaped contemporary Ottoman historiography.

Abstract: "This study examines the distinct approaches to the Byzantine legacy in Turkish historiography offered by three leading Turkish historians: Fuat Köprülü, Ömer Lütfi Barkan and Halil Inalcik, protagonists of three distinct eras of republican/nationalist Turkish historiography, as well as the most significant (in their historical scholarship and in their creation of master narratives) historians of the nation-state. An analysis of their contributions to the subject of the Byzantine legacy works to highlight the ways in which our defensive nationalist historiography has been imagined, as well as the role of our geographical and cultural ancestor within that imagination. This book analyzes the recognitions of this legacy--as well as the lack thereof--, while seeking to situate the different attitudes towards Byzantium within their real and ideological contexts. While all three historians remain prisoners of the nation-state, unable to free themselves from the narrow boundaries of its nationalist ideologies and agendas, the "anti-nationalist liberation" remains a challenge for all Turkish and non-Turkish historians working on the Ottoman Empire or modern Turkey to respond to even today."
