Os Maritimos

In this article I seek to understand how was the work of crews of ships which made the connection between Corumba, a city of the western border of Brazil, in Mato Grosso, and the port of Buenos Aires (Argentina), to Asuncion (Paraguay) and Montevideo (Uruguay). Opting for historical narrative, my intention is to present the uniqueness of the world maritime labor, highlighting the following aspects: the ethnic diversity present in the limited space of the ship, the interaction of employees with the hierarchy of command and obedience, the conflicts board and forms of solution, the extent that the laws of the land had in this world and finally, the pace of work dictated by the pace of the machine.

Afora os aspectos físicos-geográficos e econômicos, que mantinham unidas regiões aparentemente tão distantes, como os pantanais mato-grossenses, o chaco paraguaio e o Mar Del Plata na Argentina, propõe-se - para este debate - seguir as evidências históricas daqueles que transportavam as riquezas em forma de mercadorias: os tripulantes das empresas de transporte fluvial/marítimo instaladas no Mato Grosso e que faziam a ligação Corumbá–Assunção–Buenos Aires-Montevidéu.

Na busca de entender como se dava a organização da resistência dos trabalhadores marítimos em Buenos Aires, Montevidéu, Assunção e Corumbá (Brasil), no início do século XX - tema central de minha tese de doutoramento em História Social do Trabalho, em desenvolvimento -, bem como compreender a coordenação de atividades de resistência conjunta nestes vários portos fluviais e marítimo-fluviais, deparei-me com um tipo oposto de organização, o qual, muitas vezes, passa desapercebido aos olhos do historiador que se propõe a pesquisar o movimento operário, qual seja: a articulação racional da repressão policial a todo indivíduo ou movimento que, por diversos motivos, contrapunham-se à ordem estabelecida no Uruguai das décadas de 1910 e 1920.
