Old mines

The study of water management in historic mining district Hřebečná focused on the large system which consisted of water trenches and ponds draining and supplying water pumps, grinding and stamping mills etc. The reconstruction of extinct parts is based on LiDAR data, study of the written sources and historic mining and topographical maps.

Hornická krajina jako komplexní struktura zahrnuje mnoho projevů minulých lidských aktivit, které se působením věků a vývojem společnosti mění v památky. Jejich hodnota se odvíjí také od toho, co o nich víme nebo co jsme z nich ještě dnes schopni vyčíst. Využití dat leteckého laserového skenování se v současnosti poměrně šťastně potkává s nárůstem zájmu památkové péče. Cílem příspěvku je naznačit základní možnosti průzkumu a dokumentace hornické kulturní krajiny s využitím podrobného digitálního modelu reliéfu. Terénní relikty jsou základem poznání zejména tam, kde historická těžba a zpracování surovin po staletí přetvářely povrch a kde se dochovalo jen minimum stavebních památek. Přehled o tom, kde, v jakém rozsahu a v jaké míře zachování se vyskytují a co mohou vypovědět o minulých lidských aktivitách, je základem fundované památkové ochrany

Zpřístupňování podzemních historických důlních děl je zásadní pro pochopení významu a specifik historické těžby širokou veřejností. Jejich nedílnou součástí jsou i povrchové relikty vyhledávání zrudnění a těžby a zpracování vytěženého materiálu v jejich okolí. Příspěvek poukazuje na základní typy, prostorový rozsah a různou míru zachování montánního reliéfu v zázemí zpřístupněných děl nebo dalších historických památek těžby s turistickým, respektive prezentovatelným potenciálem.

Ce livre fait suite à Martys 1, paru en 1993. Il concerne les débuts (Ier s. a.C.) du grand centre sidérurgique romain situé dans le domaine des Forges (Les Martys, Aude), au cœur de la Montagne Noire.

La première partie présente les résultats des dernières fouilles archéologiques (1988-1995) exécutées dans deux sites majeurs du domaine : d’une part, Monrouch, un secteur en grande partie conservé intact depuis l’Antiquité, et dont la fouille a mis au jour une batterie de six bas fourneaux de réduction du type classique des Martys, encore pourvus, au moins partiellement, de leur système de ventilation, ainsi qu’une construction annexe, en bois et en terre ; d’autre part, le Grand Ferrier, qui, progressivement détruit par l’exploitation moderne des scories, n’offrait plus à la fouille que de rares lambeaux de terrain encore en place : on y a découvert, outre plusieurs foyers d’épuration, un ensemble désordonné de bas fourneaux, parmi lesquels un unique exemplaire de petit module, dont on a essayé de comprendre la signification face à plusieurs autres du type classique. L’étude des mobiliers (céramiques, amphores, monnaies) a permis de distinguer les phases successives de ces premiers moments du site et montré l’enracinement de la communauté des sidérurgistes dans la culture italique. Enfin les prospections effectuées autour des Martys ont révélé une forte densité d’ateliers sidérurgiques, dont l’organisation et la production font l’objet d’hypothèses.

La deuxième partie est consacrée à l’archéométrie. Recueillis au cours des fouilles, quelques objets en fer et de nombreux échantillons (minerais, scories, déchets divers, éléments de bas fourneaux, sols d’ateliers, etc.) ont été examinés en laboratoire, à l’aide de techniques souvent de pointe. En particulier la caractérisation chimique du fer des Martys a conduit les archéomètres à identifier la présence de ce fer dans les cargaisons de plusieurs épaves (Ier s. a.C. et Ier s. p.C.) au large des Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, apportant ainsi de solides arguments à la réalité de sa diffusion.

La troisième partie constitue le compte rendu des expérimentations, dont l’objectif était de comprendre par la pratique comment fonctionnaient ateliers et bas fourneaux, afin de pouvoir un jour fabriquer du fer dans les conditions d’il y a 2 000 ans, et justifier ainsi une production évaluée à 110 000 tonnes pendant trois siècles.

Surface remains of old mining activities form a specific kind of archaeological monuments. The ALS data could bring precise knowledge about its spatial extent or morphology but their chronological aspect remains usually unclear. The survey of several tips (spoil heaps) on two sites in Jáchymov (Ore Mountains) hinterland was based on metal detectors and small excavations and was able to establish early modern dating due to the ceramic collection discovered along with metal finds.

The land of deep water lies in Ontario’s north, atop the boundless rock of the Shield. It holds the secret of an island once blossoming with copper ore. Here primordial elements dance in the ancient landscape and invite us to join them in their awakening. Liquid portals, layered ancient rock and plunging mine shafts unearth a cosmic order born of chaos. Myth, geology and alchemy all fuse together in defining this place. This thesis is a journey to centre of the Shield, through the deep water, rock and voids that encircle it. It is an expedition into the multiplicities of time through the poetic imagination. Here on the bridge to preconsciousness, we are invited in. At the heart lies Copperfields, a mine isolated on an island in Temagami. Once bearing some of the purest copper on Earth, it now sits abandoned amidst fragments of its former glory. The design proposed reclaims these elements and animates them as gateways to the dynamic Shield. In the folds of time, quivering between thought and the preconscious, a fiction rich in meaning and experience is offered up. Let us now embark on our journey to the centre of the Shield.

Historická podzemní důlní díla si v odborné památkové literatuře kvůli své specifičnosti zasloužila zatím jen malou pozornost, přestože památkovou ochranu včetně podzemních prostor jich má už celá řada. Pro větší zájem je však mnoho důvodů: Absence ukotvení historických hodnot v dominantní báňské legislativě, dočasnost původních prostor v kontrastu s trvalostí vyžadovanou při zpřístupnění návštěvníkům, náročnost archeologických terénů nebo nutnost používat při „stavebně-historickém“ poznání těchto děl odlišné postupy než na povrchu.

"To study the Spanish mining activity of the Early Roman Empire we need to proceed with an integrated reading of the epigraphic and archaeological records, having in mind the Roman organizational frames. The attempt of Rome to control the provincial resources through the tributary system entailed the creation of different forms of legal and administrative organization of mining areas. These new frames, created during the Julio-Claudian Period, were defined according to Rome’s strategic interests, and developed through the necessary agents. The exploitation of public resources, among which mining was of the utmost importance, serves to explain the changes in territorial organization —at a local and provincial level—, as well as in networks of power and exchange."

Surface remains of old mining activities form a specific branch of cultural heritage. LiDAR or ALS data offer an important tool for their evidence, documentation and protection. Efficient heritage care requires good knowledge of both historic value and spatial extent of the relief relicts.
Data interpretation is a crucial phase of understanding the monuments. A catalogue of all potential feature types as recognized from the visualized data could help us to interpret both previously known and unknown types of relicts of historical mining.
ALS data also enable us to assess quantities of particular monument types in larger areas and help us to demarcate particular “sites”. Spatial context of relicts is also important and includes not only proper mining traces but also spatially or temporally coherent relicts of settlements or communications.
This paper discusses possibilities and limitations of LiDAR-based typology of mining relicts and presents both technological framework and its results.
