New Thought

Today, more than 200,000 men and women over age fifty are languishing in prisons around the United States. It is projected that by 2030, one-third of all incarcerated individuals will be older adults. An already overcrowded and underserved prison system is straining to manage the needs of incarcerated older adults with growing frailty and health concerns. Separated from their families and communities despite a low risk of recidivism, incarcerated older adults represent a major social-justice issue that reveals the intersectional factors at play in their imprisonment. How do the people aging in prison understand their life experiences?

In Aging Behind Prison Walls, Tina Maschi and Keith Morgen offer a data-driven and compassionate analysis of the lives of incarcerated older people. They explore the transferable resiliencies and coping strategies used by incarcerated aging adults to make meaning of their lives before, during, and after imprisonment. The book draws on extensive quantitative and qualitative research as well as national datasets. It features rich narrative case studies that present stories of trauma, coping, and well-being. Based on the data, Maschi and Morgen present a solution-focused caring-justice framework in order to understand and transform the individual- and community-level structural factors that have led to and perpetuate the aging-in-prison crisis. They offer concrete proposals—at the community and national policy levels—to address the pressing issues of incarcerated elders.

In twenty-first-century popular psychology and self-help literature, the “inner child” refers to an original or true self that serves as a repository of wisdom and creativity for its adult counterpart. This essay traces the modern inner child back to the nineteenth-century new religious movement known as New Thought, which emphasized positive thinking as a means to health and prosperity. Emma Curtis Hopkins, the leading New Thought teacher of the 1880s and 1890s, described an idealized “Man Child” within each adult woman who could lead her to spiritual serenity and worldly success. Frances Hodgson Burnett fictionalized this figure in her blockbuster novel Little Lord Fauntleroy (1886), whose eponymous child hero helps his mother achieve undreamed-of wealth and status. He also serves as her proxy outside of the domestic sphere, allowing her to reach personal goals without appearing selfish or inappropriately ambitious. The novel’s enormous popularity may have had something to do with this symbiotic relationship between mother and son. Then as now, the inner child helped women reconcile social pressures to be selfless and giving with career pursuits and self-indulgent behavior. The persistence of the inner child suggests that contemporary feminism still has work to do in enabling women to embrace opportunities without guilt.

En este artículo recurrimos a la cura mental del norteamericano Phineas Parkhurst Quimby (1802-1866) como ejemplo de práctica psicológica informal que, siendo previa a la psicoterapia formal moderna, contribuyó a establecer las condiciones de posibilidad para que esta última se desarrollase en el mundo occidental. Contextualizamos la labor de Quimby dentro de su época y de la formación de los Estados Unidos como país y como economía capitalista. Explicamos las bases teóricas de su cura mental y el procedimiento conforme al cual transcurría la misma, indicando algunas semejanzas generales con formas de psicoterapia posteriores. Señalamos asimismo la semejanza entre el tipo de individualismo que la cura mental apuntalaba y el de la actual Psicología Positiva.

The present paper analyses the work of Phineas Parkhurts Quimby (1802-1866), father of the Mental Healing movement in North America. It will be argued that this movement, characterized as an array of informal therapeutic practices, should be regarded as an important precursor of modern institutionalized psychotherapy. To display this argument, we will contextualize Quimby’s work within the cultural framework of American culture in general and the development of capitalist economy in particular. Second, we will examine both the theoretical basis and the therapeutic techniques of the Mental Healing movement, pointing out some of its commonalities with subsequent types of psychotherapy. Finally, we will remark the notable resemblance of Mental Healing’s individualism with that of current Positive Psychology.

Reiki, Therapeutic Touch, Applied Kinesiology, Bach flower remedies, healing with crystals, the colour therapy Aura-Soma, and Pranic Healing—the subject theme of this paper—may be counted as “classics” among the plethora of present-day energetic techniques. Arguably, Reiki was the trailblazer in the field as it prepared the social and ideological ground for several other practices that followed suit. In Reiki’s slip-stream, Pranic Healing succeeded within a decade to achieve a considerable degree of prominence, forming an integral part of the first wave of energetic techniques to gain traction in Austria during the 1990s. Pranic Healing provides an illustrative case study since it represents a vast number of practices that allude to a perennial healing wisdom of the “East,” whereas their major roots can be found in relatively recent Euro-American traditions that evolved into transcultural, globalised hybrids as shall be further elaborated here.

The present paper attempts to explore the origins and evolution of Pranic Healing by means of historical discourse analysis and to reconstruct its arrival and establishment in Austria. Section 2 sketches the Wirkungsgeschichte of mesmerism, a major progenitor of present-day subtle energy-based techniques that was developed in Vienna by the charismatic physician Franz Anton Mesmer. Disputed and finally rejected by the contemporaneous medical establishment, mesmeric practices found a fertile ground in the religio-therapeutic and alternative medical milieus especially of the American and European nineteenth century, inspiring the emergence of various alternative therapies, some of which are still widely practiced today. Section 3 explores the interpretations of mesmerism in the context of occult literature in the decades around 1900. In this regard, two major hermeneutic frameworks were crucial: the appeal to ether physics, and the appeal to an ancient, Eastern wisdom tradition. Reading mesmerism in light of occult orientalism would fuse the magnetic healing agent with a vital principle referred to as prāṇa,19 eventually leading to a hybrid system known as “Pranic Healing.” In its basic features, this system would sow the seeds for Choa Kok Sui’s healing movement, which section 4 elucidates in its historical, doctrinal, and ritual dimensions, with a spotlight on its Austrian protagonists. As will be shown, Austria’s role in exporting Pranic Healing to Central and Eastern Europe has been pivotal, which once more accentuates the country’s status as a nodal point in the globalised discourse on energy healing.

Thomas Moore Johnson, the Sage of the Osage, was a small town lawyer in western Missouri whose international correspondence was largely a result of The Platonist, a short-lived but influential journal he published intermittently from 1881 until 1888. Johnson rarely traveled far from Osceola, his birthplace, where he served as mayor for several terms, but through correspondence he became a key figure in the late 19th century American awakening of interest in Western esoteric traditions.
During the 1880s Johnson was instrumental in the nationwide expansion of two esoteric organizations, the Theosophical Society (TS) and the Hermetic Brotherhood of Luxor. Although Theosophy had developed a primary interest in Indian spiritual traditions, Johnson’s Platonist attracted the attention of TS leaders and members around the world. Johnson was a member of the American Board of Control of the TS as the Society began to establish branches throughout the United States. But within a short time he became more seriously committed to a secret society with a focus on Western rather than Eastern wisdom traditions, the Hermetic Brotherhood of Luxor.

Letters to the Sage, Volume One offers readers and scholars a rare glimpse into the relationships, organizational struggles, and intellectual and spiritual explorations of several of the key figures and locations in the early years of America’s occult revival. Containing over 200 letters from dozens of American and international cities, as well as what is perhaps the earliest known evidence of the organized study of the Tarot, Yoga, and Sufism in the United States, this is an essential book for those interested in the history of the American Midwest, esotericism, religion, and philosophy.

Much has been written about the psychologization of different spheres of contemporary American culture (education, industrial–military complex, health care, etc.) from different disciplinary perspectives. In this article, I will discuss the concept of therapeutic culture in relation to religion in America. The essay will trace contemporary therapeutic culture back to the mind cure movement and “New Thought” and its concept of the instrumental power of thoughts. A variety of 20th century developments that can be framed both as secular and as religious or spiritual, such as positive thinking, self-help, 12-step programs, New Age, and the so-called Prosperity Gospel, have predecessors in New Thought. Furthermore, the essay will survey early influential works on therapeutic culture in America. Philip Rieff's Triumph of the Therapeutic (1966), Christopher Lasch's The Culture of Narcissism (1979), and Eva S. Moskowitz's more recent study In Therapy We Trust (2001) are based on the idea that traditional Protestant religion has been eroded and replaced by the therapeutic ethos. These authors are concerned that America has traded its soul for its psyche and has swapped religion for therapy. In contrast, Eva Illouz' Saving the Modern Soul (2008) introduces a more comprehensive understanding of the therapeutic discourse as a new cultural matrix that permeates society as a whole. Moreover, a discussion of different historical studies on the interrelation of Protestant religious cultures and therapeutic ethos in the United States will demonstrate that it is not simply a relationship of replacement but one of intricate interconnection and entanglement. The works under discussion show that clinical pastoral education programs, Alcoholics Anonymous, and the Salvation Army adapted psychology and therapy to facilitate religious counseling, to foster outreach to homeless men, and to create spiritual engagement and fellowship among inebriates. As I explore the relationship between therapeutic culture and religion in America, I will point out central themes, possible shortcomings of approaches to the therapeutic so far, and desirable avenues for future research into the interplay of the therapeutic and religion.

South Asian yogic, meditational and related practices did not enter a vacuum when they became popular in Europe and North America in the second half of the nineteenth century. Since the end of the seventeenth century, recent mesmeric theories had been combined with contemplative and meditational practices to develop new medical and therapeutic healing techniques. These were further transformed and associated with magic within the context of esotericism. Especially since the middle of the nineteenth century, currents such as Spiritualism, occultism, Theosophy and New Thought developed a rich variety of meditational and bodily practices that prepared the ground for the reception of South Asian elements. In the beginning of the twentieth century, this led to the emergence of diverse yogic and meditational practices that formed the foundation of New Age culture and exert a decisive influence up to the present day. These globally entangled exchanges challenge widespread notions of authenticity and tradition, and they reveal often ambiguous power relations between westerners and their South Asian interlocutors. This chapter consequently aims at highlighting the agency of South Asian actors and argues for the importance of esotericism as a platform of global exchanges.

A new prosperity gospel is emerging in the Philippines. We call it the prosperity ethic. Its dimensions set it apart from the previous incarnation of the prosperity gospel, which emphasized tithing and confessing. Specifically, the prosperity ethic values upward mobility and uses biblical principles for the acquisition of practical skills to become rich. We make our case by drawing on the writings of Bo Sanchez and Chinkee Tan, two of the most influential prosperity-oriented preachers in the country. The prosperity ethic has three dimensions: the morality of wealth (believing right), the prescribed mindset (thinking right), and the practical skills to accumulate wealth (doing it right). In the latter part we explain the rise of the prosperity ethic by relating it to major shifts in the economy since the 1990s. For sanctifying individual hard work and desire, the new prosperity gospel is emblematic of neoliberal Christianity in the Philippines today.

"Positive Psychology is based on a particular model of the individual that was developed in the popular culture of the United States from the end of the eighteen century. This model, that we have called “positive” individualism, started with Emerson´s Transcendentalism by defending, against puritanism, that the individual, as a part of Divinity, is an essence capable of self-command, self-exploration and endless self-development. On this basis, but in a more “practical” vein and supported by hundreds of self-help manuals, movements such as New Thought or Positive Thought emphasized the power of the individual´s thinking over matter and the world to mentally cure illness, to attract wealth and achievement, and to self-fulfill the promise of happiness. A critical examination and an alternative to this model of individuality was already offered by genuine American academic psychology, such as that of John Dewey, based upon functionalist psychology and anti-essentialist principles and guided by an alternative political agenda. Current Positive Psychology moves away from the most striking metaphysical aspects of “positive” individualism, but maintains its ahistorical, asocial and subjectivist conception of the individual."

Ovaj rad sadrži teološko-filozofsko razmatranje fenomena nove misli. Naime, nova misao je fenomen koji je u Bosni i Hercegovini, ali i u zemljama naše bliže regije, poprilično nepoznat, a samim time i nedovoljno istražen.
Autor je ponudio opširan prikaz nove misli, što podrazumijeva prikaz društvenopovijesnoga, religijskoga kao i kulturološkoga konteksta koji su pogodovali nastanku učenja nove misli. Posebno je naglašen zapadnoevropski i američki religijski kontekst, budući da je unutar njega nastala nova misao. Fenomen nove misli protežira ulogu čovjekovih misli u realiziranju punoga potencijala ljudskoga života te insistira na tome da stanje čovjekovih misli direktno utječe na profiliranje kvaliteta njegovog života.

The role of William James' concept of  "mushroom knowledge" is especially interesting. This is not a thorough scholarly piece, but suggests one.  I wonder about the broader interpretations of incidental notions.

| Religion as tool of resistance in Hip Hop and Afrofuturism as exemplified by Jiba Molei Anderson's Black Comic "The Horsemen" |

This master thesis examines the countercultural adaption of religion and spirituality by artists in popular culture. This is exemplified by Chicago based Afrofuturistic artist Jiba Molei Anderson and his Black Comic series “The Horsemen”. This work surveys two hypotheses. The first one assumes that Black artists formulate protest for social justice in their media (comic) by using religious elements (Santeria and Conscious Hip Hop). The second hypothesis assumes that two different media (comic and hip hop) are able to into one intermedium (Visual Rap). The master thesis focuses closely on communicative techniques of Black Vernacular Tradition, especially Signifyin(g), Nommo and NeoHooDoo. Anderson’s “Horsemen” comic is, therefore, considered as a spiritual, magical medium—as a Visual Conscious Rap. Anderson includes concepts of the new religious movement “Five Percent Nation” in his comic’s composition and plot. On one hand, Anderson criticizes social injustice in a Gnostic-messianic storyline; on the other hand, he secretly apprises the readers of Five Percenter teachings (Supreme Mathematics, divinity of humanity). To reveal and emphasize his hidden communications, the African-American literature theory “Signifying Monkey” is viewed as a tool of religious aesthetics. Anderson intentionally misleads (inexperienced) readers by using ambiguous signs to hide and protect his Five Percenter esoteric content. By recognizing these esoteric concepts, the comic becomes a vessel for word-magic (Nommo) and positive mental powers (Afrocentric New Thought). Anderson uses visual techniques as mechanics to exchange spiritual energy; his superheroes “The Horsemen”, who are based on the West-African Orisha, serve as realized potential of Anderson’s mental power. This positive energy is used to heal the readers’ minds, suffering from racism and its ramifications. Influenced by Afrofuturism, Anderson regards African religious concepts as occult-spiritual technologies. Afrofuturism is a movement in popular culture calling attention to the historical Black experience by adapting African concepts and the Black anthropology to elements of Science Fiction. Consequentially, Afrofuturism regards Black people as Aliens and/or Cyborgs (thus as non-human beings), because they have been designated to be non-humans in slavery and racism. On the basis of those post-colonial aesthetics, Anderson sources his own body out into his comic which consequently becomes a Black body itself; it becomes a living machine operated by Afrocentric energy. This work advocates a stronger focus on specific communicative techniques in media research conducted by scholars of religions. As an outcome of this plea, it introduces two terms: “media magic” and “techno-religion”. “Media magic” is characterized by a synthesis of religion/spirituality and medium; a mass medium becomes a vessel for magic and occult powers under certain aesthetical conditions. The second term “techno-religion” provides a new perspective for the study of religions which takes the entanglement of power, religion/spirituality, technology, science and society into account. It is conceptualized to be capable to think Religion and Post-Colonialism (i.e. race, gender, society, power and resistance) together.

Sažetak: U ovome radu se prezentiraju rezultati empirijskog istraživanja o prisutnosti fenomena Nove misli kod bosansko-hercegovačkih muslimana, a kao uzorak je odabrana jedna sredina-općina Sanski Most. Naš rad, na osnovu postavljenih pet pitanja (onto-kozmo-antropološki koncept, drugim riječima iskazano, kroz koncept Bog-Svijet-Čovjek), prikazuje prisutnost ovoga fenomena kod različito strukturiranih ispitanika: po spolu, životnom dobu, mjestu stanovanja, te obrazovanju. Anketiranjem imama s anketnog područja smo dobili značajnu svojevrsnu kontrolnu grupu koja je komparativno korištena u objašnjenju dobivenih rezultata.

The Hebrew writer Abraham Mordecai Harizman (1884–1978) devoted the better part of two decades to the articulation of a messianic vision of bodily and spiritual transformation. This literary project was oriented around two interconnected poles: stimulating the emergence of cosmic consciousness as theorized by the Canadian psychiatrist R. M. Bucke (1837–1902) and bringing about a positive Jewish reorientation towards sexuality in Palestine. To that end, Harizman began in 1925 to publish installments of a Hebrew translation of Bucke’s magnum opus Cosmic Consciousness, as well as several liberal-minded sex guides interlaced with spiritual teachings taken from Bucke and other modern esoteric traditions ranging from New Thought to German neopaganism. The first of these guides, Gever ve-Isha (Man and woman, 1935), guided readers toward a sexual transformation and religious revitalization rooted in New Thought, psychoanalysis, and autosuggestion, culminating in a return to a primordial state of cosmic love. Sefer ha-Ahavah (The book of love, 1940), lavishly illustrated with erotic images, synthesized this progressive sexual ethos with Zionism (the Jewish return to the land necessitated the development of a higher love consciousness) and incorporated lengthy translations from Cosmic Consciousness and a sex magic guide authored by the German occultist Georg Lomer (1877–1957). Lastly, Yotser Adam (Creator of man, 1942), penned in the darkest years of WWII, identified the global cataclysm as both the onset of the messianic era and the product of untreated sexual energy. Collectively, Harizman’s writings from these years draw together diverse esoteric sources in a call for sexual and Jewish religious transformation.

Positive thinking is good for you. You can become healthy, wealthy, and influential by using the power of your mind to attract what you desire. These kooky but commonplace ideas stem from a nineteenth-century new religious movement known as 'mind cure' or New Thought. Related to Mary Baker Eddy's Christian Science, New Thought was once a popular religious movement with hundreds of thousands of followers, and has since migrated into secular contexts such as contemporary psychotherapy, corporate culture, and entertainment. New Thought also pervades nineteenth- and early twentieth-century children's literature, including classics such as The Secret Garden, Anne of Green Gables, and A Little Princess. In this first book-length treatment of New Thought in Anglophone fiction, Anne Stiles explains how children's literature encouraged readers to accept New Thought ideas - especially psychological concepts such as the inner child - thereby ensuring the movement's survival into the present day.

U ovom radu autor prezentira dva motivacijska govornika i analizira njihova najznačajnija djela, a radi se o Deepaku Chopri i Jamesu Arthuru Rayu. Inače, riječ je o popularnim autorima kroz čija djela se promiče ideja Nove misli, odnosno učenja čija fenomenologija je sastavni dio religije novog doba. Ovaj rad predstavlja prvi teologijsko-filozofski osvrt na spomenute autore čija djela je moguće pronaći kada govorimo o zemljama naše bliže regije, prije svega u susjednoj Republici Hrvatskoj i Republici Srbiji, ali u posljednje vrijeme i na sajmovima knjiga u Bosni i Hercegovini primjetno je prisustvo ovih autora kod izdavača koji izlažu knjige iz domena popularne psihologije.

Summary
In this paper, the author presents two motivational speakers and analyzes their most significant works, and they are Deepak Chopra and James Arthur Ray. Otherwise, these are popular authors whose works promote the idea of New Thought, that is, teachings whose phenomenology is an integral part of modern-day religion. This work represents the first theological and philosophical review of the aforementioned authors whose works can be found in the countries of our immediate region, but also, more recently, at book fairs in Bosnia- Herzegovina.

Doktorski rad pod naslovom: „Fenomen Nove misli i analiza zastupljenosti njenog učenja u vjerovanju muslimana Sanskog Mosta“ predstavlja znanstvenu analizu fenomena Nove misli i njezine zastupljenosti u vjerovanju muslimana Sanskog Mosta.
Kroz teorijski dio rada je predstavljen fenomen Nove misli, njezino vremensko-povijesno ishodište, učenje i najznačajniji predstavnici.
Istraživački dio rada predstavlja interpretaciju, analizu i kritički osvrt na istraživanje koje je za cilj imalo utvrditi da li postoji zastupljenost fenomena Nove misli u vjerovanju muslimana Sanskog Mosta.
Istraživanjem su potvrđene sve postavljene hipoteze rada, te je zaključeno da u vjerovanju muslimana Sanskog Mosta, naročito mladih, postoje ozbiljne naznake fenomena kojeg smo istražili.
S obzirom da do sada, sa islamsko-teologijskoga  aspekta nije artikulirano učenje Nove misli, ovaj rad je predstavio učenje Nove misli kako znanstvenoj tako i  široj društvenoj  javnosti.

Abstract

Doctoral dissertation on topic: "Phenomenon of New thought and analysis of representation of its teachings in beliefs of Muslims in Sanski Most" represents scientific analysis of phenomenon of New thought and its representation in beliefs of Muslims in Sanski Most.
Through theoretical part of this work phenomenon on New thought is represented and its time-historical origin, moral and the most significant representatives. Explorative (heuristic) part of dissertation is represented interpretation, analysis and critical review on research whose aim was to confirm is there representation of New thought phenomenon in beliefs of Muslims in Sanski Most.
Through this research all set hypothesis are confirmed, and it is concluded that in beliefs of Muslims in Sanski Most, especially in beliefs of youth, there are marks of phenomenon which was explored.
Taking in consideration that untill now this phenomenon was not articulated from the islamic-theological aspect, this dissertation represents basic scientific venture to show to scientific as well as social public phenomenon of New thought.

Die Doktorarbeit mit dem Titel: „Das Phänomen der Neuen Gedanken und Repräsentanzanalyse ihrer Lehre im Glauben der Muslime in Sanski Most“ stellt eine wissenschaftliche Analyse des Phänomens -  Neue Gedanken und ihre Repräsentanz im Glauben der Muslime in Sanski Most dar.
Durch den theoretischen Teil der Arbeit wurde das Phänomen - Neue Gedanken dargestellt, ihre zeitlich-geschichtliche Ursprung, Lehre als auch ihre bedeutenden Vertreter.
Der Forschungsteil der Arbeit stellt die Interpretation, Analyse und einen kritischen Rückblick auf die Forschung dar. Das Ziel dieser Arbeit war festzustellen, ob die Repräsentanz des Phänomens -  Neue Gedanken im Glauben der Muslime in Sanski Most existiert. 
Durch die Forschung sind alle vorgegebenen Hypothesen der Arbeit bestätigt und es wurde festgestellt, dass im Glauben der Muslime, insbesondere bei den jungen Menschen in Sanski Most, ernsthafte Anzeichen für das Phänomen, dass wir untersucht haben, vorhanden sind. 
Da bisher aus der Sicht des islamisch-theologischen Aspekts das Phänomen - Neuen Gedanken nicht zum Ausdruck gebracht wurde, präsentiert dieses Grundlagenforschungsprojekt sowohl der wissenschaftlichen als auch gesellschaftlichen Öffentlichkeit das Phänomen -  Neue Gedanken.
