RESULTS: Erythropoietin and testosterone concentrations were virtually increased in both groups A (P<0.05) and B (P<0.05). The effect of stanozolol on erythropoietin (subgroup A1) (11.35±1.31 ng/mL) was significantly higher than nandrolone decanoate (subgroup B1) (8.02±0.55 ng/mL) (P<0.05); nevertheless, the changes in testosterone levels, was not significant between groups A and B (P>0.05). The liver enzymes of ALP, ALT and AST were increased more significantly in group A than group B (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Erythropoietin and testosterone levels were virtually increased in both groups A and B; however, stanozolol had more significant effect than nandrolone decanoate in increment of erythropoietin; nevertheless, it had more side effects on liver indices. It is suggested that nandrolone decanoate to be administered for the therapeutic goals.

This observational, multicentre, prospective phase IV study examined change in health-related quality of life (QOL) from baseline to 6 months in women initiating combined oral contraception (COC) based on natural estrogen. Eligible women attending a baseline and 6-month gynaecology appointment belonged to one of three groups: group 1 used barrier contraception (condoms) and elected to continue this method; group 2 used condoms and elected to switch to COC based on natural estrogen; group 3 used COC based on ethinylestradiol and elected to switch to COC based on natural estrogen. The Spanish Society of Contraception (SEC)-QOL scale assessed health-related QOL. This study investigates the effects of melatonin on the sperm quality and testis weight after the combination of swimming exercise and nandrolone decanoate (DECA). Two groups of male Wistar rats were treated for eight weeks as follows; group A consist of CO (control), Sham, N (DECA), S (swimming) and NS (DECA plus swimming); and group B: Sham M (sham melatonin), M (melatonin), MN (melatonin plus DECA), MS (melatonin plus swimming), MNS (melatonin, DECA plus swimming). The motility of sperm was significantly improved in melatonin groups in comparison to N, S and NS groups (P≤0.05).  The left testes weight was decreased in N, NS and MNS groups, and the right testes weight was decreased in N,S,NS, MS and MNS groups in compare with the control group. This study concluded that melatonin probably could improve the sperm motility and sex organs weight after the combination of DECA and exercise.

To evaluate the influence of nandrolone decanoate on fracture healing and bone quality in normal rats. Metabolites of nandrolone were determined in the urine of several sportsmen, sedentary and post-menopausal women by capillary gas chromatography–mass spectrometry quadrupole (GC–MS) and capillary gas chromatography mass–mass spectrometry ion trap (GC–MS–MS) methods. The method employed was GC–EI-MS with 17α-methyltestosterone as internal standard with ethyl ether extraction prior to selected ion monitoring of the bis(trimethylsilyl) ethers at ion masses m/z 405 and 420 for the nandrolone metabolites, and 418 and 403 for nandrolone derivative. Recovery for nandrolone, 19-norandrosterone (19-NA) and 19-noretiocholanolone (19-NE) was 97.20, 94.17 and 95.54%, respectively. Detection limits for nandrolone, 19-NA and 19-NE were 0.03, 0.01 and 0.06 ng/ml. Metabolites of nandrolone (19-NA and 19-NE) were found in 12.5% (n=40) of sportsmen and 40% (n=10) of post-menopausal women.

Anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS) are used in high doses by athletes to improve athletic ability, physical appearance, and muscle mass. Unfortunately, the abuse of these agents has significantly increased. It has been established that exercise and high doses of AAS may influence the hypothalamic-pituitary gonadal (H-P-G) axis, which can in turn affect the ultrastructure of the testes. 1. Cocaine and anabolic-androgenic steroids are among the more commonly abused substances in selected populations. These agents, when used alone or in combination, have been reported to cause aggressive tendencies in both laboratory-based animal models and in human clinical situations. This project, using a resident-intruder paradigm, examined the effects of co-administration of cocaine and a typical anabolic-androgenic steroid, nandrolone decanoate, on the development of aggression in male Sprague-Dawley rats. 2. Dose response studies demonstrated that low dose cocaine (1 mg/kg) produced more aggression in a greater percentage of animals than for either the controls or groups receiving higher doses (up to 20 mg/kg). The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential mechanisms underlying the improved contractility of the diaphragm (Dia) in adult intact male hamsters after nandrolone (Nan) administration, given subcutaneously over 4 wk via a controlled-release capsule (initial dose: 4.5 mg. kg-1. day-1; with weight gain, final dose: 2.7 mg. kg-1. day-1). Motoneuron degeneration is the hallmark of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The cause and predisposing factors for sporadic ALS are still unknown. Exposure to a specific environmental risk factors in subjects with a susceptibility genotype may increase the risk of the disease. The role of physical activity and the use of anabolic steroids are still debated in epidemiological studies on patients and murine models of ALS. To assess at the cellular level the role (beneficial or detrimental) of physical exercise and the use of anabolic steroid, we here investigated, in SOD1(G93A) (mSOD1) mice and wild-type littermates, changes in the ventral horn after regular exercise, treatment with the anabolic androgenic steroid 19-nortestosterone (nandrolone), and their combination, compared with matched control sedentary mice. The experiments were pursued for several weeks until symptom onset in mSOD1 mice. Lumbar motoneurons, astrocytes and microglia were analyzed. In wild-type mice, cytological alterations of motoneurons were observed especially after nandrolone treatment. The following main findings were observed in treated mSOD1 mice versus untreated ones: i) nandrolone treatment markedly enhanced motoneuron loss; this detrimental effect was reverted by the combination with exercise, resulting in increased motoneuron survival; ii) astrocytic activation was most marked after nandrolone treatment when motoneuron damage was most severe; iii) microglia activation was most marked after physical exercise when motoneuron damage was less severe. The results indicate a vulnerability of mSOD1 motoneurons to nandrolone treatment, a potential neuroprotective effect of physical exercise, and a modulation by glial cells in the ALS murine model in the examined paradigms.

We evaluated the effects of swimming and anabolic steroids (AS) on ventricular function, collagen synthesis, and the local renin-angiotensin system in rats. Male Wistar rats were randomized into control (C), steroid (S; nandrolone decanoate; 5 mg/kg sc, 2×/wk), steroid + losartan (SL; 20 mg·kg−1·day−1), trained (T), trained + steroid (T+S), and trained + steroid + losartan (T+SL; n = 14/group) groups. Swimming was performed 5 times/wk for 10 wk. Serum testosterone increased in S and T+S. Resting heart rate was lower in T and T+S. Percent change in left ventricular (LV) weight-to-body weight ratio increased in S, T, and T+S. LV systolic pressure declined in S and T+S. LV contractility increased in T ( P &lt; 0.05).
