Mixed Unions

En esta tesis doctoral se exploran los mundos y vidas juveniles de descendientes de familias mixtas y no-mixtas ecuatorianas y dominicanas en Barcelona. Se preguntan por los diferentes aspectos claves en la configuración de estas vidas y se analizan las prácticas, expresiones e identificaciones socioculturales que emplean los jóvenes en estos ámbitos.
La condición de ‘ser joven’ —tener una determinada edad biológica e identidad social— se ha cristalizado como el hilo conductor que atraviesa todos estos aspectos de forma transversal. La experiencia de ‘ser joven’ organiza las demás experiencias vitales que se ubican, de forma importante, en las actividades de ocio y culturas juveniles, en el ámbito de los estudios y en los espacios familiares, particularmente en la relación con los padres. Temas como la apariencia física, ‘la popularidad’ y el posicionamiento en los espacios juveniles resultan, además, centrales para entender las expresiones juveniles.
Analizo las prácticas e identificaciones socioculturales de los jóvenes desde sus contextos sociodemográficos —su lugar de residencia— y desde sus relaciones sociales personales que mantienen con diferentes personas. Mientras que los propios jóvenes dan poca importancia a las auto-identificaciones de índole nacional o étnico, experiencias de racialización o racismo pueden influir, según el caso, en la forma cómo los jóvenes se definen en relación con otros en la sociedad catalana. La clase social y el género atraviesan de forma transversal las experiencias y prácticas en los distintos ámbitos vitales de los jóvenes. Además, hago hincapié en la biografía personal y familiar de los jóvenes como motor importante detrás de muchas de las prácticas y expresiones juveniles.
El enfoque amplio sobre las realidades y vidas de los jóvenes se ve reflejado en la propuesta metodológica. Consiste en la realización de 24 estudios de caso en profundidad —complementados por 10 entrevistas— con adolescentes y jóvenes de un perfil variado, entre 13 y 23 años y con residencia en diferentes barrios del área metropolitana de Barcelona. El trabajo de campo se realizó entre los años 2013 y 2016.
La propuesta metodológica consiste, más concretamente, en la aplicación de un conjunto de diversas técnicas de investigación, adecuadas para adolescentes y jóvenes y que permiten entender las realidades juveniles desde diferentes ángulos. Esta técnicas incluyen propuestas innovadoras como el uso de ‘Mapas mentales’, el ‘Juego de asociaciones’ o el ‘Paseo guiado por el barrio’.
Se trata de un estudio exploratorio, sobre un tema poco investigado en España y Cataluña, y con un claro enfoque etnográfico.

Heritage language research across contexts and areas of focus has intensified in the last two decades. Despite such an increase, families of mixed linguistic background are minimally represented in the literature. This is incompatible with the current global increase and social reality of this family type. The ethnolinguistic diversification of family composition worldwide calls for more targeted research with a growing demographic that grapples with an amplified complexity of issues. Therefore, the chapter provides a succinct overview of a selection of topics of fundamental importance, such as family language policy, an emerging area traditionally discussed only tangentially in related scholarship. It then describes the deployment of various family language policies and the relative effectiveness of implementing these communication arrangements. Moreover, the chapter highlights some of the ways in which the social, linguistic and political circumstances of interlingual families may pose challenges related to policies and practices where various power relations—particularly gender—are implicated. It is shown that heritage language research with the children of parents who do not share a mother tongue has begun to establish key foundational knowledge regarding the factors that impact their linguistic lives, but also reaffirms the recent call made by scholars about the need for further research around interlingual family language policy, socialization and related issues. Finally, the chapter puts forward possible directions for future research and knowledge dissemination among key stakeholders.

The main sources for my article are the files concerning dispensations for mixed marriages held in the Archive of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (the Holy Office). My article analyses the tension between two Roman Catholic attitudes toward Catholic women in mixed marriages: the hope that they would serve a missionary role, on the one hand, and the fear that they would succumb to heresy, on the other. Debates within the Holy Office over granting these dispensations show that both conceptions had ancient roots, the first going back to the Roman era, the second to the twelfth century, and then particularly emphasised after the Council of Trent. Studies of mixed marriages in Protestant end Orthodox regions suggest many similarities to the Catholic policies examined here, both regarding the woman’s missionary function and especially regarding the risk of the woman’s apostasy and the meth-ods developed to avoid this.

Drawing on fieldwork conducted among converts to Islam (France and Quebec), this article focuses on women who are in unions with partners of Muslim background. As these women commit to make a union based on shared religious identity, they face the double challenge of learning to be a Muslim and of transmitting identity to the children. Addressing these issues opens a space of ongoing negotiations within the couple (sometimes involving the in-laws) over the definition of the 'authentic' Islam, and the articulation between religion and ethnicity. These conjugal debates create new areas of mixedness through women's own identification processes as Muslim and French or Quebecois. This negotiation is framed by the social and cultural capital each partner is granted in their specific context of living, including experiences of having minority status, as well as by the specific representations each partner draws on the ethnicity and space of origin of the other.

Résumé

Cet article propose quelques considérations théoricométhodologiques autour de la mixité. Il cherche à mettre en évidence les limites, les pièges et les dérives de la littérature existante en ce qui a trait à la conceptualisation de la notion de mixité. Après une contextualisation initiale (définition, variables et modèles liés au phénomène de la mixité), il s'agira d'indiquer les différents niveaux clés de complexité théorique et méthodologique du phénomène afin d'éviter les visions simplistes ou réductrices. Nous nous interrogerons donc sur la clarté de la notion d’« union mixte », l'équivalence entre mixité et intégration sociale, et nous soulignerons la complexité inhérente aux processus de configuration de l'identité ethnique résultante.

Abstract

This article offers some theoretical-methodological considerations concerning 'mixedness'. It seeks to highlight the limits, pitfalls and derivatives of current literature with respect to the conceptualization of 'mixedness'. After a preliminary contextualisation (definition, variables and main patterns linked to the phenomenon of 'mixedness', endogamy and exogamy), the aim will be to draw attention to the different key levels of theoretical and methodological complexity of the phenomenon, with the purpose of avoiding simplistic or restrictive analyses. We will therefore put into question the clarity of the notion of “mixed union”, the direct equation between hybridity and social integration, and will emphasize the inherent complexity of the processes of configuration of the resulting (mixed) ethnic identity.
