Migration Journeys

The refugee journey is the defining feature of the exilic process: it is a profoundly formative and transformative experience and a 'lens' on the newcomers' social condition. Yet it remains a significantly under-researched theme in refugee and forced migration studies. This exploratory article maps what exists, what is missing , and what might be researched regarding these journeys. Commencing with a review of the fragmented nature of the research and its limited analytical scope, the article then reviews BenEzer's definitive work. The core of the article explores the potential value and contribution of the study of journeys in terms of: better understanding the profoundly formative experience of the journey; giving voice to the refugees' unique experiences; and better informing policy from a fuller understanding of the journey experience. The article presents four conceptual challenges in studying the refugee journey and the final section proceeds to discuss some of the methodological questions related to research of journeys.

Between September 2015 and November 2016 a team of researchers led by the Centre for Trust, Peace and Social Relations (CTPSR) at Coventry University, working in collaboration with University of Birmingham’s Institute for Research into Superdiversity and the Centre on Migration, Policy and Society at the University of Oxford, conducted research into the ‘migration crisis’ at the borders of southern Europe. The MEDMIG project provides the first large-scale, systematic and comparative study of the backgrounds, experiences, routes and aspirations of refugees and migrants in three EU Member States – Italy, Greece and Malta – and Turkey. This PhD thesis focuses on the migration trajectories of sub-Saharan Africans who are heading for the European Union. With an analytical framework that is inspired by the new mobilities turn, and by the means of a trajectory ethnography, I have investigated migrants' journeys by focusing on the changeability of migrants' aspirations, the importance of social connections and disconnections, and migrants' experienced mobility/immobility.

This article engages with the development and expansion of border industries in the global North. Recently, the state-led industries have grown in response to the rising number of irregular migrants contesting the borders of the global North. Situated within the constructed narrative of ‘crisis’, border industries are both materially and discursively produced as a direct response to the perceived threat of irregular migrant populations. The article interrogates the development of border industries from both the state and migrant perspectives. The purpose of the article is to examine not only the emergence of these border industries but to highlight the detrimental and deadly impact they continue to have on migrant journeys, ensuring the continuation of the structural and direct violence of borders. The development of these industries, particularly from the state-led perspective, is indicative of the violent, exclusionary practice and enactment of borders. The paper adds to the calls for rethinking bordering practices while simultaneously challenging the perpetuation and continuation of a hegemonic global apartheid regime constructed through state bordering practices in the global North.

This article argues that the concept of ‘cosmologies of destinations’ is a useful theoretical tool to provide an emic understanding of the social and moral meanings of migrants’ journeys. By this concept, I refer to the hierarchical representations of the world that orient migration journeys. Drawing from my multi-sited ethnography with Eritreans at home and abroad, I illustrate how migration destinations were mapped by my informants along an implicit but widely shared normative and moral scale, with different levels of perceived safety, individual freedom, social recognition and economic achievements. After charting the theoretical field concerning social imaginaries and cultures of migration, I show the importance of symbolic and moral structures for understanding my informants’ mobility choices at different stages of their migration process. I conclude by highlighting the potential of this concept to study the interplay of mobility and immobility, particularly in the framework of increasing constraints.

First report of the ESRC-funded project 'Unravelling Europe's Migration Crisis' (MEDMIG) exploring the dynamics of movement across the Mediterranean to Europe. The report differentiates between the Central and Eastern Mediterranean routes providing an overview of who is travelling through each route, the differences and similarities between them and the European policy response. Η έρευνα «Girls on the move in Greece» πραγματοποιήθηκε από το Κέντρο Γυναικείων Μελετών και Ερευνών «Διοτίμα» με τη χρηματοδότηση της Save the Children – Σουηδίας στο πλαίσιο του διεθνούς προγράμματος «Girls on the move», που καταγράφει τις εμπειρίες μετανάστευσης ασυνόδευτων και συνοδευόμενων κοριτσιών στα Βαλκάνια, στη Λατινική Αμερική και την Αφρική. Πρόκειται για την πρώτη έρευνα πεδίου που διεξάγεται για τις ανήλικες προσφύγισσες καλύπτοντας ένα σημαντικό κενό στις έρευνες περί μετανάστευσης στην Ελλάδα, στο βαθμό που τα διαθέσιμα στοιχεία ‒κυρίως ποσοτικά‒ εστιάζονται κατά κύριο λόγο στον πληθυσμό των αγοριών, παραγνωρίζοντας τις ιδιαίτερες ανάγκες και συνθήκες μετανάστευσης των κοριτσιών. Το υλικό συλλέχθηκε μέσα από επιτόπια έρευνα και ημιδομημένες συνεντεύξεις που διεξήχθησαν σε δομές φιλοξενίας με ασυνόδευτα κορίτσια, καθώς και με συνοδευόμενα κορίτσια και τους γονείς τους, αναφορικά με την εμπειρία του ταξιδιού τους στην Ελλάδα. Η έρευνα διεξήχθη μεταξύ Νοεμβρίου 2019- Ιανουαρίου 2020 και είχε τους παρακάτω στόχους:

- Να ενσωματώσει το φύλο ως αναλυτική κατηγορία στη μεταναστευτική / προσφυγική εμπειρία.
- Να εντοπίσει τους λόγους μετανάστευσης καθώς και τις συνθήκες διαβίωσης των κοριτσιών στην Ελλάδα.
- Να εντοπίσει τους κινδύνους που διατρέχουν κατά τη μετανάστευση και την παραμονή τους τα κορίτσια στην Ελλάδα, οι οποίοι άπτονται του φύλου και της σεξουαλικότητας.
- Να αναδείξει δομικά εμπόδια στην πρόσβασή τους σε κρατικές και μη κρατικές δομές και υπηρεσίες καθώς και την άσκηση βιοπολιτικής που αποκλείει τα κορίτσια από μια σειρά από κοινωνικά και πολιτικά δικαιώματα.
- Να προβεί σε προτάσεις πολιτικής, τόσο σε εθνικό όσο και σε ευρωπαϊκό επίπεδο, που μπορούν να επιφέρουν μικρές αλλά σημαντικές βελτιώσεις στη ζωή τους.

Μέσα από τη διαθεματική προσέγγιση των παραπάνω ερευνητικών στόχων η παρούσα μελέτη προσπάθησε να αναδείξει τα σημεία δια-πλοκής μεταξύ ανηλικότητας, φύλου, σεξουαλικότητας και μετανάστευσης, αξιοποιώντας την πολυετή εμπλοκή του κέντρου «Διοτίμα» με το πεδίο του προσφυγικού σε καταυλισμούς και στον αστικό ιστό.

Απώτερος σκοπός ήταν μια κριτική ματιά που θα ισορροπεί περίτεχνα μεταξύ του λόγου των ΜΚΟ και ενός ανθρωπολογικού / φεμινιστικού λόγου που αναστοχάζεται τις συνθήκες παραγωγής και αναπαραγωγής της προσφυγικής εμπειρίας, που προσπαθεί να αναδείξει τους μηχανισμούς «ετεροποίησής» τους και που προβληματοποιεί συνολικά τους όρους συγκρότησης του προσφυγικού υποκειμένου.

Τα κείμενα που ακολουθούν είναι οι εισηγήσεις των δύο ερευνητριών ‒Ντιάνας Μάνεση και Μαρίας Λιάπη‒ και της επίκουρης καθηγήτριας Ειρήνης Αβραμοπούλου, που παρουσιάστηκαν στην εκδήλωση «Κορίτσια σε κίνηση: Πολύ μικρές για να γνωρίζουν, πολύ μεγάλες για να περιμένουν». Η εκδήλωση έλαβε χώρα διαδικτυακά τον Φεβρουάριο του 2021.
