In the 15th century, Domenico Da Piacenza followed by his disciples Antonio Cornazzano and Guglielmo Ebreo Da Pesaro wrote the first treatises on the Art of the Dance known in the West, adopting therein a theoretical approach. The notion of time became one of the cornerstones of an art that aspired to the status of scientia liberalis. The mesura is first of all the measurement of musical time and of the fit between the time and the steps. It is also the measurement of the space in which the choreography is developed; the dancer uses his body as a unit of measurement of the space which is also a space constructed by the movement of that same body. Finally measure is understood as moderation of posture and gesture. Measurement is therefore the condition required to reach perfection of the Art of the Dance, and, understood as moderation, the condition required to reach moral perfection and to be able to hold one’s rank in the Italian courts of the Quattrocento
