Lost Space

Dhaka city has an urbanization process over 200 years old and a history of over 400
years. Over this period of time Dhaka evolve to one of the crowded and most densely
populated city of the world. The city flourished in trade and commerce, developed
residential areas and educational facilities and all necessary infrastructures to support
the life system of the city and its inhabitants. In this period of time not only the
population increased but also a massive change in overall city built environment was
staged.  But most of these developments were soon challenged by the almost tripled
population in the late 90’s. A field data survey will be conducted focusing on the effects
of ever changing land use, circulation and connections producing urban left over
spaces at land scares center of Dhaka. As a case study the Elephant Road
subsequent adjacent nodal areas will be studied, surveyed and analyzed. The area
came under the impression of massive development phase at the late 90’s and early
2000 and left behind significant urban fabric manipulation due this course. The study
will search for and document the aftereffect and current conditions to the defined left
over urban spaces and try to rectify the overall city image through proper management
of these left over spaces.

Urban space is used by citizens at different frequencies and contains various different functionalities. Therefore,
it can be observed that some areas are internalized while others remain abandoned. Underused spaces are referred
to as ‘lost space’ in literature, defined by Roger Trancik (1986). The work by Trancik has influenced other
researchers into thinking and studying lost space in cities. Kadikoy is a historical settlement located in Istanbul.
Starting from the 19th century, the area has gone through transformations under the chronological effects of
industrialization, deindustrialization, modernization and lastly urban regeneration. Additionally, economic,
political and social changes have led to lost spaces in various areas of Kadikoy. This research aims to identify
these lost spaces, investigate the reasons of them becoming underused and propose solutions on how they can be
regained into city-life. The investigation consists of three parts: literature review, physical area analysis and a
questionnaire towards frequent users of Kadikoy. In the literature review, Roger Trancik’s concept of lost space
will be examined as well as other approaches towards underused spaces. Physical analysis such as figure-ground
and linkage will be used in the determination of differentiated areas of Kadikoy in terms of urban fabric. The
questionnaire will provide a sociological point of view, to understand the reasons behind the preferences of users
towards the spaces of Kadikoy. The following questions have been of guidance throughout the research: How are
lost spaces segregated from the rest of Kadikoy? What were the driven causes in the formation of lost spaces?
What can be done to revitalize these spaces into city-life?

This essay is about a new kind of space, the space under each of the fifty odd flyovers built in Mumbai over the last twenty years. I call it underplace, and see it in relation to a larger Lefebvrian production of space that the flyovers are involved in.

"We cannot tell that we are constantly splitting into duplicate selves because our consciousness rides smoothly along only one path in the endlessly forking chains."

This forthcoming paper will explore some highly speculative - even preposterous - but seductively appealing recent models of the physics of time-space and dimensionality.
It will be argued that although these models are seemingly impossible to test in the external world, they may have a profound truth and validity in the internal world of the human unconscious mind.

Psychoanalytic clinical material will be presented which convincingly suggests that we all live, emotionally, just as much in the worlds of possibility as we do in the world of " external reality ". For example, the loss of a baby may bring devastating grief or depression to a mother as much (if not more) for mourning the losses of imagined possible futures for that lost child, and for that potential mother, as for the loss of the  " actual baby. "

Whether or not parallel worlds and alternate realities and timelines exist in the physical world seems highly un-possible, and fraught with infinite contradiction. But in the unconscious world of the cognitive-emotional mind, we may be certain not only of their existence, but of their intense and profound psychological influence. To ignore the importance of a person's hopes and dreams of possibility in the formation of emotionally real losses and joys, even if deeply unconscious, is to forego the chance to truly understand their human self.

Of course, all this leaves wide open the issue of where, in the mind, theories of Physics - indeed of all scientific disciplines - are conceived.

  At the very least, this paper argues the importance of "mental" parallel universes and alternate realities in the formation and perseverance of depressive feelings.

The film "Mr. Nobody" (2009) and others are used to explicate these ideas.

The Burragorang Valley is one of those lost places that people fondly remember from the past. A place of the imagination and dreaming where former residents fondly retell stories from their youth. These places create powerful memories and nostalgia for many  people and continue to be places of interest. They are localities of myths and legends and imminent danger yet at the same time places of incredible beauty.

Carole O'Brien and I curated a screening of shorts on the subject of the city for WNDX Experimental Film Festival. From the catalogue: "Cities – perhaps especially this city – are riddled with accidental, neglected and forgotten spaces. Yet these can be the most evocative of urban places, connecting with personal and collective feelings of loss and potential. This screening is devoted to these spaces, and the gaps they reveal in modern visions of the city. It includes shorts by graduate students in architecture at the University of Manitoba (created during a seminar in urban and media theory) as well as selected works from Winnipeg, Saskatoon, and Shanghai. A provocative juxtaposition of differing views on the city, and the impacts of different scales and speeds of urbanization." The program included work by several participants from my post-doc project: Anca Matyiku, "The Other Face of Time"; Michael Maksymiuk, "Odeon"; Rhayne Vermette, "A Reenactment of Events"; Andy Puiatti, "Space Replaced"; Shaun Cummings, "Dazed or Confused"; Zhi Yong Wang, "The Lost of Chinatown". A number of these students have gone on to produce more film work. Anca's (ancamatyiku.com) film and architectural work with Chad Connery was selected for inclusion in Canada's entry to the Architectural Biennale 2012 in Venice, Migrating Landscapes. Rhayne is now one of Winnipeg's most innovative young filmmakers (vimeo.com/user3015746).

Like any other discipline dealing with urban settlements and human relations, landscape architecture infiltrates from the larger scale to the local project, arriving to colonize interstices between the different layers of the city, scales of intervention and wide range of users. Urban lost space, voids within the urban fabric, become then a great lesson to understand how landscape can be a tool to deal with urban scape’s figures and not just a superficial practice to mitigate or embellish.
Parking lots belongs to that kind of lost spaces that have a secondary role within the urban machine but are mandatory to make it work. Forgotten from a design point of view due their lucrative character, their great impact on land use, their capacity to relieve the city of the increasing presence of cars and their importance within an ecological and sustainable framework where the proper use of its materials can help reduce impervious surfaces, fight heat islands, and contribute to the control of water runoff and effective groundwater recharge, make them claim our economic investment and our attention as designers of our urban environment.
Renowned landscape designer Diana Balmori stated that “a Parking lot seems an unlikely place to begin the design of a new building and landscape” but she managed to make it the main public space of the Botanical Research Institute of Texas, part of a collecting rainwater and ecological operating system; it is no longer a problem to solve, but an element to delight visitors from the moment they park their cars.
The paper will review recent projects of parking lots that become a great lesson on how to deal with the sense of identity of a community, the inclusion of leftover spaces or the hybridization of their programs, within the urban ecology and contemporary public realm.
