Lorraine Daston

Lorraine Daston arrived in Montevideo in the last carnival holidays. Although it was her first time  not  only  in  this  city  but  in  Latin  America,  her  books  are  well  known  among  historians and philosophers of science from this part of the world. In her visit, she gave a Seminar about
Historical Epistemology – the historical practice that she develops in the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science, in Berlin –, a way to understand scientific past in order to comprehend the science of the present. She also offered a lecture at the National Museum of Arts named “Big Calculation and the History of Intelligence”, where she presented – for a big audience – what the roots of nowadays fashioned studies in machine learning and artificial intelligence are. Finally, she  participated  in  the  reunion  of  the  General  Archive  of  the  Universidad  de  la  República  de 
Uruguay  [the  academic  Department  of  the  archive  was  the  main  responsible  for  her  visit  to  Uruguay], and discussed the role of archives in the constitution of future science.

Abstract: Concibiendo a la Epistemología Histórica como peculiar estilo que nos lleva a comprometernos, no sólo con un ejercicio filosófico crítico sobre la historia de las ciencias, sino también con un trabajo sobre nosotros mismos para responder a nuestra actualidad, emprenderé aquí un recorrido por textos de la EH y de la HE, procurando subrayar en ellos el ejercicio epistemológico como trabajo sobre sí, así como sus relaciones con la ética y con la política. Finalmente, destacaré la importancia de estas cuestiones para pensar y hacer de otro modo en nuestras prácticas de investigación, docencia y formación, especialmente en una epistemología en diálogo con las ciencias humanas.

What is contemporary emotionality? And what might we feel about feelings, from an ongoing point of view, when our model of emotions are set to specific, well-attested, and semi-rational motivations? What do we do by insisting on the modality or in fact, usefulness, of attuning our moods? In this essay, I come to a critique of contemporary and modern perspectives of emotion and emotional well-being. This includes an extended reading of the Myth of Ajax and a brief overview of current work in the history of emotions. Finally, the essay comes to a critique of the current relationship of therapeutic models of one's well-being to one's labor value, amidst a 'marketplace of feeling'.

Refundado desde el Instituto Max Planck, el programa conocido como Epistemología Histórica (EH) se erige como uno de los más reconocidos movimientos para el tratamiento de la vieja práctica epistemológica. Este nuevo movimiento, que pretende involucrar tanto a la Historia como a la Filosofía en el estudio de la práctica científica, ha generado un ambiente de discusión donde las críticas no demoraron en aparecer. La tensión central que provocó no es otra que la que se produce cuando, una vez más, se pone en disputa la definición de lo que la ciencia es, hace o debería hacer. Este trabajo tiene el propósito de identificar los programas filosóficos que históricamente se han dado detrás de esta etiqueta y eleva una serie de advertencias sobre la nueva epistemología histórica y el proyecto filosófico y político que parece esgrimirse desde sus silencios.

In this essay, I think about transgression as the bite before the chew, about how it takes desire for change as evidence for the change.  I build upon Freud, Foucault, Lacan, Bersani, Edelman, and Byron to show how transgression becomes a theory of agency that exceeds empirical evidence.  I turn to Byron and Don Juan to work through how surprise becomes the embodied form of transgression par excellence.
