Liverpool Slave trade

This thesis examines the business history of William Davenport (1725-1797), a Liverpool slave trading merchant from 1748 until 1786. Through an examination of a recently discovered collection of Davenport's business papers and personal letters, this thesis places Davenport in the context of Liverpool's development as a slaving port, and the growth of the town's slaving merchant community. It explains how Davenport became one of the largest slaving merchants of his generation, and one of the wealthiest Guinea merchants in Liverpool's history. To explain Davenport's rise this thesis focuses on how he managed his slaving company by studying two geographically close, but economically distinct, areas of the Guinea coast where he traded for slaves - Old Calabar and Cameroon. This thesis demonstrates how Davenport cultivated merchant partners, and developed a supply chain of trading goods, to suit the unique conditions of both African markets. This thesis also explores Davenport's business profits by examining his returns from several different areas of investment, including the slave trade, the ivory trade and his speculation in financial securities. By building a composite picture of Davenport's diverse business concerns this thesis argues that the profits of the slave trade underpinned his financial success.

This is a biography of a Nova-Scotian black soldier who served in the British Army during the Napoleonic War, and later settled in Liverpool when working as a sailor. It will be source led in format, and comments from myself will be limited to clarification of contemporary events. It is inspired by Fryer’s Staying Power, The History of Black People in Britain, (1984), Chater’s Untold Histories: Black People in England and Wales During the Period of the British Slave Trade, 1660-1807, (2011), and Costello’s Black Liverpool: The Early History of Britain’s Oldest Black Community, 1730-1918, (2001).

Penny lane est devenu un métatoponyme, peut être même le métatoponyme par excellence. En effet, le toponyme a aujourd’hui acquis une renommée mondiale qui en fait un haut lieu de la culture occidentale en tant qu’icône de la pop music. Le toponyme a ainsi connu une trajectoire allant du désignateur de lieu ordinaire, choisi pour cela indépendamment de son signifié originel (John Penny, marchand esclavagiste), dans une œuvre relevant du genre de la pastorale suburbaine, vers un désignateur de haut lieu patrimonial et touristique. Parallèlement, le tournant mémoriel et réflexif postcolonial a rattrapé le toponyme en rappelant son signifié originel et en jouant sur sa notoriété dans un autre registre pour attirer l’attention sur la question mémorielle d’une ville impliquée dans la traite esclavagiste. Le toponyme est alors mis en avant pour sa valeur pédagogique mais est absous de toute obligation d’épuration toponymique compte tenu de son autre valeur patrimoniale positive et d’échelle mondiale.

In the present study, it was try to investigate the effects of green tea
on some biochemical parameters of male albino rats with ethanol
toxicity. All rats were divided into 4groups, Group 1 (controls) and
group 2 (ethanol control) remaining 2 groups were treated with
ethanol and green tea extract for 30 days. The results showed
significant  elevation in the level of ACP, sugar  (P<0.001), and
Bilirubin  (P<0.005) where  as liver weight  Showed no significant
elevation  with  ethanol as compared to normal. These changes in all
parameters indicated liver injury and hepatomegaly due to the
enhancement in the ROS which causes decrease in antioxidants of
body defense system. The green tea extract  with ethanol treatment
was able to restore these changes at various levels of significance
comparing with the control group of rats. These data suggested that
the green tea exerts improvement in liver function by preventing the
production of reactive oxygen species  (ROS) and enhancing the
antioxidant defense system capacity. Thus green tea extract has
protective effects against ethanol toxicity.

Crowding on slave ships was much more severe than historians have recognized, worsening in the nineteenth century during the illegal phase of the traffic. An analysis of numerous illustrations of slave vessels created by then-contemporary artists, in conjunction with new data, demonstrates that the 1789 diagram of the British slave ship Brooks—the most iconic of these illustrations—fails to capture the degree to which enslaved people were crowded on the Brooks, as well as on most other British slaving vessels of the eighteenth century. Five other images of slave ships sailing under different national colors in different eras further reveal the realities of ship crowding in different periods. The most accurate representation of ship-board conditions in the eighteenth-century slave trade is in the paintings of the French slave ship Marie-Séraphique.
