Lime Kilns

Η μεταπτυχιακή αυτή εργασία, που εκπονήθηκε στο πλαίσιο του Α΄ Μεταπτυχιακού Κύκλου Σπουδών του Κλάδου Βυζαντινής Αρχαιολογίας, του Τομέα Αρχαιολογίας, του Τμήματος Ιστορίας και Αρχαιολογίας, της Φιλοσοφικής Σχολής του Αριστοτελείου Πανεπιστημίου Θεσσαλονίκης, αποσκοπεί στην συγκέντρωση την επεξεργασία και την συγκριτική παρουσίαση των ανασκαμμένων παλαιοχριστιανικών και βυζαντινών εργαστηρίων που έχουν εντοπιστεί στον Ελλαδικό χώρο και που κατά καιρούς έχουν παρουσιαστεί σε μεμονωμένες δημοσιεύσεις είτε ως πρωτεύον εύρημα, είτε ως δευτερεύον στοιχείο μιας ευρύτερης ανασκαφής.
Το πρώτο μέρος της εργασίας καταλαμβάνει ο κατάλογος των εντοπισμένων και δημοσιευμένων εργαστηριακών χώρων, ο οποίος συντάσσεται βάσει του τεχνολογικού χαρακτήρα και του προϊόντος της παραγωγικής διαδικασίας των εργαστηρίων. Βασική πηγή υλικού, ελλείψει συνολικών δημοσιεύσεων, είναι οι μεμονωμένες δημοσιεύσεις ανασκαφών εργαστηριακών χώρων σε αρχαιολογικά περιοδικά και πρακτικά συνεδρίων. 
Στο σημείο αυτό πρέπει να σημειωθεί η δυσκολία που παρουσιάστηκε στην συλλογή του υλικού, καθώς το μεγαλύτερο μέρος των εργαστηρίων της περιόδου που εξετάζεται, δεν δημοσιεύεται αναλυτικά ενώ πολλές φορές αποτελεί αντικείμενο δευτερευόντων σημειώσεων σε δημοσιεύσεις οικοδομικών συνόλων παλαιότερων εποχών.
Ο κατάλογος των δημοσιευμένων εργαστηριακών χώρων που εντοπίστηκαν ανασκαφικά στον ελλαδικό χώρο, χωρίζεται σε δύο κεφαλαιώδη μέρη, βάσει του τεχνολογικού χαρακτήρα των εργαστηρίων.
Στο πρώτο μέρος του καταλόγου εντάσσονται εργαστηριακές εγκαταστάσεις, κατά τη διαδικασία επεξεργασίας και παραγωγής των προϊόντων των οποίων είναι αναγκαία η ανάπτυξη υψηλών θερμοκρασιών μέσω λειτουργίας κλιβάνου για την τήξη ή την όπτηση της ύλης.
Στο δεύτερο μέρος του καταλόγου καταγράφονται εργαστήρια, κύριο χαρακτηριστικό των οποίων είναι η ανάπτυξη της παραγωγικής διαδικασίας μέσω ενός συστήματος υδραυλικών κατασκευών, αγωγών και αυτοτελών ή συγκοινωνούντων δεξαμενών.
Τα δύο κύρια μέρη του καταλόγου έχουν συνεχή αρίθμηση και συντάσσονται με βάσει το είδος της παραγωγής των εργαστηρίων, τα οποία καταρτίζουν μικρότερες θεματικές ομάδες. Τα λήμματα κάθε ομάδας εργαστηρίων καταγράφονται με γεωγραφική σειρά . Εργαστήρια που εντοπίζονται στην ίδια γεωγραφική περιοχή, καταχωρούνται με σχετική χρονολογική σειρά από τα πιο πρώιμα στα οψιμότερα παραδείγματα.
Ακολουθεί μια απόπειρα ανίχνευσης της οργάνωσης του χώρου των βιοτεχνικών εργαστηριακών εγκαταστάσεων βάσει των σταδίων της παραγωγικής διαδικασίας, καθώς και της επιλογής του χώρου οργάνωσής του, βάσει των δυνατοτήτων προμήθειας πρώτης ύλης, όπου αυτή είναι δυνατή, της δυνατότητας διοχέτευσης του παραγόμενου προϊόντος στην αγορά και της δυνατότητας οργάνωσης του εργαστηριακού συνόλου στο πλαίσιο ενός ήδη οργανωμένου ή υπό οργάνωση αστικού ή αγροτικού τοπίου. Γίνεται τέλος μια προσπάθεια  ανίχνευσης της εξέλιξης των τεχνολογικών στοιχείων της παραγωγικής διαδικασίας και του τρόπου οργάνωσης των χώρων των εργαστηριακών εγκαταστάσεων από το τέλος της αρχαιότητας και την παλαιοχριστιανική εποχή στην μεταβατική περίοδο και μέσω αυτής στους βυζαντινούς χρόνους.

Η αναβίωση του επιστημονικού ενδιαφέροντος για την άσβεστο στην Ευρώπη ξεκίνησε από το χώρο της προστασίας της πολιτιστικής κληρονομιάς με βάση τις διαπιστώσεις ότι το τσιμέντο στις περισσότερες των περιπτώσεων δεν είναι η καταλληλότερη συνδετική κονία για τις αποκαταστάσεις μνημείων και ιστορικών κτιρίων, αλλά επίσης ότι η σύγχρονη διαθέσιμη στο εμπόριο άσβεστος λόγω της εντατικοποίησης της παραγωγικής διαδικασίας δεν είναι η βέλτιστη για δομική χρήση. Βέβαια, παρά τις ανεπιτυχείς εφαρμογές που έχουν δημοσιοποιηθεί, κανείς δεν αμφισβητεί σήμερα ότι η άσβεστος είναι η πλέον συμβατή συνδετική κονία προς χρήση σε επαφή με αυθεντικά πορώδη δομικά υλικά. Παράλληλα, όμως, επισημαίνεται το γεγονός ότι η τεχνολογία παρασκευής και εφαρμογής κονιαμάτων με βάση την άσβεστο, είτε έχει παραμεληθεί και ξεχαστεί είτε είναι εντελώς ξένη με τη σύγχρονη κατασκευαστική πρακτική. Στόχος της διδακτορικής διατριβής είναι να συνεισφέρει στον προβληματισμό σχετικά με τα αίτια των ανεπιτυχών εφαρμογών ασβεστοκονιαμάτων στις αποκαταστάσεις μνημείων και ιστορικών κτιρίων, καθώς και στην αποτίμηση των τεχνολογικών και μηχανικών χαρακτηριστικών των βασισμένων στην άσβεστο ιστορικών κονιαμάτων. Να συμβάλει επίσης στην ανάπτυξη καινοτόμου τεχνογνωσίας που θα διασφαλίσει την παραγωγή και διάθεση στο εμπόριο δομικής ασβέστου κατάλληλης για επεμβάσεις από εγχώριες πρώτες ύλες. Αντικείμενο της έρευνας αποτέλεσε η διερεύνηση της βελτιστοποίησης της παραγωγής δομικής ασβέστου υψηλής δραστικότητας. Μελετήθηκε πειραματικά η επίδραση της μεταβολής των κύριων παραμέτρων όλων των επιμέρους φάσεων της διαδικασίας παραγωγής ασβέστου στα ποιοτικά χαρακτηριστικά της. Η καταλληλότητα της ασβέστου ελέγχθηκε περαιτέρω με την παρασκευή κονιαμάτων. Η επιλογή της συγκεκριμένης μεθοδολογίας ελέγχου βασίστηκε στα τεχνολογικά δεδομένα που προέκυψαν από τη συγκριτική μελέτη της ελληνικής παραδοσιακής και σύγχρονης τεχνογνωσίας παραγωγής ασβέστου, σε σχέση με στοιχεία από τη διεθνή βιβλιογραφία και εμπειρία. Ως περιοχή ολιστικής προσέγγισης και έρευνας στον ελληνικό χώρο, επιλέχθηκε ο αντιπροσωπευτικός, με βάση διεθνή επιστημονικά και φιλοσοφικά κριτήρια, ιστορικός τόπος παραγωγής ασβέστου στο Ασβεστοχώρι ν. Θεσσαλονίκης. Με βάση τα εργαστηριακά αποτελέσματα αξιολογούνται τα επιμέρους –ΕΛΟΤ ΕΝ 459: 2001 ή προτεινόμενα- κριτήρια ελέγχου και διατυπώνονται προτάσεις προδιαγραφών βέλτιστων συνθηκών παραγωγής και προδιαγραφών ποιοτικού ελέγχου.
Abstract
The purpose of the paper is to contribute to the understanding of the unsuccessful use of lime based mortars in monuments’ and historical buildings’ conservation as well as to the assessment of the technological and mechanical characteristics of the historical lime mortars. The reasons of the questionable quality of modern building limes will be also investigated towards the development of know-how that will ensure the production of high reactivity building limes suitable for conservation of monuments and historical buildings from local raw materials. The objective of the research was the investigation of the amelioration of the high reactivity building lime’s production. The influence of the main parameters’ change –during all the intermediate productive phases- to lime’s quality was thoroughly studied. Lime’s suitability for interventions was furthermore investigated through mortars’ manufacture and study of their technological and mechanical characteristics.
The selected methodology of research was based upon technological data derived from the comparative study of the traditional and modern greek know-how in lime production and the international experience and bibliography. The historical site of lime production in Asvestochori (Thessaloniki, Greece) has been selected –according to international scientific and philosophical criteria- for an holistic approach and study. The laboratory research –based on EN 459: 2001 or suggested test methods and criteria- concluded to proposals of specifications of best production parameters and of specifications of quality control."

ABSTRACT: This report forms the basis of a forthcoming study on the late Old Kingdom to First Intermediate Period housing and burials in Units HF and AL-K at Mendes, which were excavated by G. Mumford during the 1991-94 and 1998 seasons at Mendes (Project Director: D. B. Redford).  The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada funded this writer's subsequent post-doctoral research and work in these areas (via the Mendes project), with the final report being readied for publication (all the diagnostic pottery has been digitized; most plans and sections have been completed).  The current, preliminary report provides an overview from Unit AL-K.  ADDED: The upper strata in the excavation unit contained a lime processing kiln/furnace from the Roman period, which had been used, with other such installations, in processing lime from limestone blocks extracted from various pharaonic and Ptolemaic period structures from Mendes.

Η εισήγηση επιδιώκει την προβολή και διάδοση των θέσεων και προτάσεων προστασίας και ανάδειξης της (προ)βιομηχανικής κληρονομιάς παραγωγής ασβέστου στο Ασβεστοχώρι Θεσσαλονίκης, το οποίο αποτέλεσε αξιοσημείωτο κέντρο ανάπτυξης τεχνογνωσίας και εμπειρίας στην παραγωγή ασβέστου για πάνω από 300 χρόνια. Επιχειρεί, παράλληλα, να συνεισφέρει στην σφαιρική αντιμετώπιση του πολυκριτηριακού προβλήματος διαχείρισης της ιστορικής αυτής περιοχής, με στόχο την ολοκληρωμένη διατήρηση και ένταξή της στο ευρύτερο πλαίσιο της Ζώνης Πολιτιστικού Τοπίου Χορτιάτη-Ρεντζικίου, όπου καταγράφεται διαχρονικά ισχυρή διάδραση φυσικών περιβαλλοντικών παραγόντων και ανθρωπογενούς παρέμβασης από αρχαιοτάτων χρόνων έως σήμερα.

The world is permanently changing, so that throughout life, many of us are left with nice memories for realities that are left behind and lost, or other times survive only in our memory. In rural areas, the transformations are often slower and maybe that's why the memories of the locals seem to preserve more intensely the image of a specific way of life. Traditions, customs, occasional or daily activities and crafts are left behind, which no longer find their place in the present time.
Vărăritul is the craft by which limestone is transformed into lime, and it was one of the occupations practised by many communities in mountain areas, in the Apuseni Mountains and elsewhere. On this occasion, we intend to record some sequences of the respective craft in the rural environment in the area of the Metaliferi Mountains. The paper is based on the testimonies of three locals, recorded during the research campaigns but also on other occasions.

Archaeological excavations along the route of the new N5 Ballaghaderreen Bypass have shown that people were living and working for millennia in an area that appears at first glance to be a marginal landscape of wetlands and rocky crags. The excavated evidence attests a human presence in the area from the Neolithic period to the present day and is a valuable addition to the settlement evidence for the northwest part of County Roscommon. The excavations were commissioned by Roscommon County Council with funding from the National Roads Authority (NRA). They were directed by David Bayley, Shane Delaney, Tom Janes and James Kyle. The analyses of samples and artefacts cited in this paper were by Eoin Grogan and Helen Roche (prehistoric pottery), Killian Driscoll (chipped stone) and Ellen O Carroll (ancient wood).

La presencia de las industrias caleras en la Hispania romana ha pasado desapercibida dentro del estudio de las diversas actividades implicadas en la construcción romana. Su total ausencia de las fuentes históricas hispanas, obliga a rastrear su existencia en el ámbito de la arqueología. En este trabajo abordamos una primera introducción a su estudio en la Península Ibérica.

The paper also summarizes the recording of lime kilns with historical and technological significance on a map, includes an assessment of the natural, historical and technological values incorporated to the site, and finally presents the perspectives of the area.

Recent archaeological investigations of company towns and industrial
communities in the Santa Cruz mountains around the turn of the twentieth century have emphasized goals of understanding the daily lives of workers. Engaging with these themes, this paper aims to investigate material evidence for the consumption of alcohol in company-controlled communities in the Santa Cruz lime industry as a way of asking larger questions about nineteenth and early-twentieth century diasporic labor communities and their lived experiences within corporate spaces. This paper situates alcohol consumption practices as meaningful and multivalent parts of laborer’s lives, specifically as strategies for the negotiation of identities and the contestation of company town social controls and Victorian morality. Through a review of oral histories and collections from the Cowell Lime Kilns complex (CA-SCR-198H) and the Sam Adams Lime Kilns (CA-SCR-339H), this report relates to topics of broader interest in the fields of historical and industrial archaeology, specifically providing opportunities to explore issues of power, ethnicity, and labor in spaces of industrial capitalism at the turn of the century.

Ines Jöns (2019): Rutenberge und Öfen bei Meschede-Enste. Archäologie in Westfalen-Lippe 2018, 216-218.

Construction of an extension to the industrial estate of Meschede-Enste brought to light an early medieval site and three kilns probably later in date. A depression in the slope had allowed the ground-plans of 13 hay barracks and one rectangular building to be preserved. Three kilns whose functions can no longer be confirmed beyond doubt were situated in the same area.

Bei der Erweiterung des Gewerbegebiets von Meschede-Enste wurden ein frühmittelalterlicher Fundplatz und drei Öfen vermutlich jüngerer Zeitstellung entdeckt. In einer Senke im Hang blieben die Grundrisse von 13 Rutenbergen und einem rechteckigen Gebäude erhalten. An gleicher Stelle wurden drei Feldbrandöfen angelegt, deren Funktion nicht eindeutig bestimmt werden kann.

Presents the author's doctoral thesis research (in abridged form), an inventory of lime kilns dating to the late 17th century in Asvestochori, a lime village in the vicinity of Thessaloniki, Greece. The recorded oral and written information on kilns with historical and technological significance in Asvestochori identifies two areas of development and activity closely related to two nearby quarries. One of these areas contains preindustrial lime kilns built of stone and reinforced with wooden beams, which are evidence of the oldest stage of development in the lime village settlement. The other area contains early-industrial Hoffman kilns and industrial lime kilns. The author describes problems related to the future deactivation of the quarrying area (including the kilns) with the approved action for environmental restoration of the lime village, which parallels the need to preserve historic patrimony that can offer the possibility of a cultural space inspired by open-air museums. The author offers her views on passive and active actions for protecting this industrial heritage site with a holistic approach.

The first settlement was established with the name Neochori (meaning “new village”) sometime between 1580-1600 after a special order of the sultan of the Ottoman Empire. It is documented that about 1680-1700 part of the population has already started the lime production. It was then that Neochori was renamed to Asvestochori (“lime village”) or Kiretskioi (in Turkish language).
The area of Asvestochori constitutes an extremely interesting and rare historical, natural and technological entity. In a relatively manageable space it features an assemblage of representative, pre-industrial, early-industrial and industrial examples of the world history of lime production and it also developed fully vertically-integrated production, from quarrying the limestone through to the final product. According to international printed sources, the design and the firing of lime kilns remained almost the same up to the late-nineteenth century. Therefore, the surviving pre-industrial kilns and the relevant quarries completely cover the pre-industrial period. The two Hoffman lime kilns belong to the early industrial period, while the actual operating kilns represent the technology of the 1970s.
The life cycle of the historic quarries of Asvestochori will soon end, after three hundred years. The active lime companies look embarrassed at the future. In case they will decide to move close to the new quarrying zones, it is a great challenge for their industrial installations to be included in the historical site, and be protected. It is a prerequisite for the holistic approach and wise management of its natural, historical and technological values.

This paper updates and upgrades the author’s previous systematic research on lime heritage issues, focusing on the fact that relevant feasibility case studies of integrated conservation are currently at a crucial crossroad. In this frame, the author claims that technological values may potentially become the key values for regional viable development by prioritizing production preservation vs. unripe industrial monuments’ re-uses. Hence, our support to successful lime manufacture know-how is imperative, for reasons of authenticity, sustainability and products quality. It is also a prerequisite, in order to compensate the standardisation push that gradually tends to reduce heterogeneity of limes and to transform small scale production into a large scale one, in the move from local towards global markets. Bearing in mind the difficulty of finding scientific proof by doing an empirical investigation in an international level, an inventory of the functioning traditional lime units is proposed, based on a tested questionnaire. The aim should be the establishment of a cooperation network that will develop challenging alternative strategies, in order to specify local raw materials, craftsmanship, techniques and know-how strategies in lime production and gradually define them as competitive in construction, on the grounds of sustainable development. The comprehensive documentation of the former and our combined efforts - in terms of interdisciplinary perspective and international cooperation network - not only leads to integrated ways of conserving world’s patrimony but also launches industrial heritage’s sustainable dimension.
