Lettering in architecture

Este texto pretende demostrar la importancia de la integración de los sistemas tipográficos en el proyecto arquitectónico a partir del análisis de la reforma del Grand's Restaurant (Filadelfia, 1962) de Robert Venturi y William Short. Elegir este caso de estudio permite entender el impacto de este recurso en la etapa temprana de Venturi (1962-1969). El tema remite a contenidos y aspectos que, hasta la fecha, permanecen prácticamente inéditos a pesar de los muchos estudios dedicados a la obra y escritos del arquitecto. A pesar de su discreto tamaño y presupuesto, el Grand's concen-tró de manera ejemplar tanto aspectos teóricos de la propia investigación de Venturi, como fue, asimismo, precursor de otras corrientes interdisciplinares del momento como Supergraphics. La escritura es aquí un elemento arquitectónico de ‹pleno derecho› que afecta a la interpretación del proyecto, a su carácter simbólico y su entendimiento como integrante del orden y la composición arquitectónicos.

Typography as an element integrated into the early work of Robert Venturi, 1962-1969.
This article, based on an analysis of the refurbishing of Grand's Restaurant (Philadelphia, 1962), designed by Robert Venturi and William Short, aims to show the importance of integrating systems of typography into architectural design. Choosing this case study enables the impact of typogra-phy on Venturi's early period (1962-1969) to be examined. The theme involves content and aspects which have remained virtually unexplored to date despite the many studies devoted to Ventu-ri's architecture and those written by the architect himself. Despite its modest size and budget, Grand's not only exemplarily condensed theoretical aspects of Venturi's own investigation but also served as a precursor for other interdisciplinary trends of the time such as Supergraphics. Writing in Grand's is a ‹fully-fledged› architectural element affecting the design's interpretation, its symbolic nature and its understanding as part of an architectural order and composition.

This article sets out to do a case study of the Condomínio Cícero Prado, a complex of buildings by architect Gregori Warchavchik, built in 1954 in São Paulo, and has the final goal of performing an analysis of its lettering, as a formal element of information and identity in the built architecture.

In ‘Dutch Type’, Jan Middendorp presents a comprehensive overview of type design and lettering in the Netherlands, tracing its origins through type designers and lettering artists from the 15th to the 20th centuries. Partly based on dozens of interviews, the book also offers insight into the motives and methods of the first generations of digital type designers, featuring published and unpublished type­faces as well as sketches, studies, and samples of lettering work. While the quest for quality and innovation has remained constant, it makes clear that the advent of desktop type has opened up the discipline to a more spontaneous, inventive, and democratic approach.

This article discusses the process for the making of a matrix for identifying samples of Art Déco architectural lettering. The matrix was created from the analysis and reunion of recurrent characteristics observed in typographic samples from printed materials of several kinds, and also from Art Déco architectural details, originated between 1920 and 1950. Its purpose was to provide qualitative subsidies for the final selection of samples to be included in a research on Art Déco architectural lettering in the city of São Paulo, in development in FAUUSP postgraduate program.

Este artigo aborda o processo para elaboração de uma matriz de características formais para a identificação de exemplares de tipografia arquitetônica de estilo Art Déco. A matriz foi elaborada a partir da análise e reunião, das características mais recorrentes observadas em exemplares tipográficos, utilizados em impressos de diferentes naturezas, e também em elementos arquitetônicos de estilo Art Déco, produzidos no período entre 1920 e 1950. Sua finalidade, foi a de proporcionar subsídios qualitativos para a seleção final de amostras, a serem utilizadas em pesquisa sobre tipografia arquitetônica Art Déco na cidade de São Paulo, em desenvolvimento no programa de pós-graduação da FAUUSP. Resumo Este artigo descreve métodos e procedimentos utilizados na construção do 'Acervo epigráfico paulistano'. O acervo consiste em um conjunto de representações de epígrafes arquitetônicas — gravações contendo o nome dos responsáveis pelo projeto e construção de edifícios do centro histórico da cidade de São Paulo. O estudo destas inscrições proporciona, por um lado, uma melhor compreensão da forma tipográfica e das técnicas de gravação, bem como de sua relação com a linguagem arquitetônica. Por outro, contribui para a construção da história da cidade, a partir dos dados sobre a atuação de arquitetos, engenheiros e construtores, alguns deles desconhecidos ou pouco estudados. Palavras Chave: epígrafes arquitetônicas, acervo epigráfico, memória gráfica Abstract This paper describes methods and procedures applied to the setting of 'São Paulo city epigraphic archive'. This archive consists in representations of architectonic epigraphs —engravings containing the names of those responsible for the design and construction of São Paulo city historic buildings. The study of architectonic epigraphs provides, on one hand, a better comprehension of typographic form and engraving techniques, and of its relation to architectonic language. On the other hand, it contributes to the setting of a history of the city, departing from data about the engagement of architects, engineers and constructors, some of them unknown or seldom studied.

Este artigo apresenta um estudo comparado acerca de inscrições contendo os nomes de arquitetos e construtores encontradas em fachadas de edifícios nas cidades de São Paulo e Londres. Para o estudo, 123 epígrafes arquitetônicas encontradas no centro histórico da cidade de São Paulo foram comparadas com 71 inscrições do mesmo tipo encontradas nas regiões de Westminster e Camden, na área central de Londres. O foco das análises é o aspecto informacional das inscrições, incluindo sua localização, tamanho, configuração tipográfica e conteúdo.

ResumenEste texto pretende analizar un aspecto concreto de la idea de “convención” en la obra de Robert Venturi: la incorporación del objeto cotidiano a la arquitectura en un contexto, el del Pop, en el que parece recuperarse, transformada, la dialéctica del ready-made duchampiano. Se propone así un doble ejercicio de análisis. En la aproximación propuesta se señalarán, en primer lugar, posibles intervenciones que a través de los objetos puedan entenderse como próximas al ready-made, junto a un estudio de posibles variantes en su utilización como recurso. En segunda instancia, se estudian distintos casos en los que el objeto deja de ser un elemento como tal dentro de la naturaleza de la obra para devenir, sin ambages, en su propio motivo formal: arquitectura como ready-made. Lettering, architectural lettring, typography, art déco, visual identity, Banco de São Paulo This paper features the case study of Banco de São Paulo Building, designed by architect Álvaro Botelho, one of the most representative buildings of the Art déco Style in São Paulo architecture. The building holds an interesting set of lettering inscriptions that could be described as a pioneering visual identity system based on architectural lettering. In combining the early twentieth century avant-gardes proposals with traditional ornamental oriented styles the Art Déco was particularly successful in the use of architectural lettering, widely used as an architectural element. This is easily observed in the Banco de São Paulo Building, where we can find different lettering solutions in terms of technique and material used, as well as placement on the building. All occurrences shows a coherent letter design, that can be noticed also in the architectural drawings boards, where the handmade letters used in titles exhibit a very similar design to those used in the several inscriptions found throughout the building. This fact suggests that this letter design, was probably developed in the architect's office, before taking its final forms on the building, consisting thus in a pioneering visual identity system.
