Laurion

From the first ore mines in 5400 BC until the 12th century AD, the mining people believed that metals flourished in the Earth's matrix from which they were extracted and therefore they worshipped Gaia / Ga meter > Demeter. At the same time they celebrated their patron god Dionysus who saved them from accidents in the mine galleries. Twice a year with mimetic dances, with shouts and invocations they thanked him as Savior. These events were transformed by the 6th century BC into theatrical "dramatic" performances in Athens, as I demonstrate.

The so-called 'helicoidal washeries of Laurion' are actually circular edge runner mills, probably derived from the olive crushing mill trapetum (in Latin). They were used for fine grinding of litharge abandoned earlier near furnaces as waste, in order to recover its silver/lead inclusions by hydromechanical concentration in the rectangular washeries. They were invented probably in the early 3 rd century BC and their operation in Laurion lasted until the middle of the 1 st century AD.

Οι μηχανικοί της Γαλλικής Εταιρείας Μεταλλείων Λαυρίου, φορείς της ευρωπαϊκής τεχνογνωσίας, συνέβαλαν καθοριστικά στη βιομηχανική ανάπτυξη του Λαυρίου και στην καθιέρωσή του ως ένα από τα σημαντικότερα μεταλλευτικά και μεταλλουργικά κέντρα της Ανατολικής Μεσογείου. Ηδη από τις πρώτες ιστορικές μελέτες γίνονται γνωστά ονόματα Γάλλων μηχανικών και εταιρειών που συνέβαλαν στην κατασκευή και τη λειτουργία των εγκαταστάσεων των μεταλλείων. Στην ιστορική τεκμηρίωση του ερευνητικού προγράμματος του Ε.Μ.Πολυτεχνείου το 1995, αναφέρονται τα ονόματα των “Huet et Geyler” ως μηχανικών του εμβληματικού πλυντηρίου στον Κυπριανό. Ποιοι είναι όμως οι μηχανικοί αυτοί; πώς και γιατί επιλέγονται να κατασκευάσουν τα σημαντικότερα κτίρια της εταιρείας; πώς υλοποιείται η κατασκευή των πλυντηρίων και πώς εξελίσσεται η λειτουργία τους; Η παρούσα μελέτη, βασιζόμενη σε γαλλικά ιστορικά αρχεία, έρχεται να δώσει απαντήσεις στα ερωτήματα αυτά και ταυτόχρονα επιχειρεί μια νέα αποτίμηση των κτιρίων της Γαλλικής Εταιρείας Μεταλλείων Λαυρίου.

Οι Alfred Jean Ηuet et Alfred Edouard Geyler, μηχανικοί της Ecole Centrale, έρχονται στο Λαύριο έπειτα από πρόσκληση του Jean-Baptiste Serpieri, όντας ήδη αναγνωρισμένοι διεθνώς ως ειδικοί της μεταλλουργικής βιομηχανίας. Με περισσότερα από 50 μοντέρνα πλυντήρια και εργαστήρια μηχανικής επεξεργασίας μεταλλευμάτων σε Ευρώπη, Αφρική, Κεντρική και Λατινική Αμερική, θεωρούνται οι καλύτεροι στον τομέα τους, χωρίς άλλον ανταγωνιστή πέραν από τους γερμανικούς οίκους. Από την πρώτη στιγμή που φθάνουν στο Λαύριο, ασχολούνται με την μελέτη του έργου των αρχαίων Ελλήνων μεταλλουργών, ανακαλύπτουν τα κοιτάσματα μολυβδούχων μεταλλευμάτων, πλούσια σε άργυρο, και κυρίως την καλαμίνα, σε διάφορες μορφές και σε μεγάλες ποσότητες. Διευθύνουν τις εργασίες εκμετάλλευσης και επεξεργασίας μεταλλευμάτων με τρόπο μεθοδικό και συστηματικό. Αρχικά τελειοποιούν τον εξοπλισμό των στοών και ανανεώνουν τις μηχανές εξόρυξης των μεταλλείων με νέα σύγχρονα μηχανήματα. Στη συνέχεια κατασκευάζουν δύο πλυντήρια για τον εμπλουτισμό των φτωχών μεταλλευμάτων και τον μηχανικό διαχωρισμό των μικτών (μεταλλευμάτων). Τα μηχανήματα των πλυντηρίων αυτών είναι τα πολυπλοκότερα και τα τελειότερα όλων των προηγούμενων εγκαταστάσεων. Το 1879 παρουσιάζεται η πρώτη μελέτη τους για τα μεταλλεύματα του Λαυρίου η οποία κερδίζει το χρυσό μετάλλειο του Συλλόγου των Πολιτικών Μηχανικών της Γαλλίας. Η εργασία τους αυτή θεωρείται μία από τις πιο αξιόλογες μονογραφίες που γράφτηκε ποτέ για τη διαμόρφωση και τις ιδιότητες της καλαμίνας. Χάρη στις πολύχρονες μελέτες των Huet και Geyler, γνωρίζουμε σήμερα την καλαμίνα του Λαυρίου, της οποίας ο πλούτος και η ποιότητα είναι από τις καλύτερες του κόσμου.
Τα παλαιά πλυντήρια της Γαλλικής Εταιρείας Μεταλλείων Λαυρίου παραμένουν έως και σήμερα μοναδικοί μάρτυρες του έργου των Γάλλων μηχανικών και της ιδιαίτερης ιστορίας τους. Την ιδιαίτερη αυτή ιστορία οφείλουμε να αναδείξουμε, αλλά και να αξιοποιήσουμε για την μελλοντική λειτουργία του Τεχνολογικού Πολιτιστικού Πάρκου του Λαυρίου.

«Lavrion» is a local adjective for mountain "Olympos" in the area. From the mine galleries, it was connected with the words "Λαβύρινθος" and "Λαύρα", which denoted the stony ground and the tunnels. However, the Athenians had used this word since the 15th century b.C. to state the white silver.

La conversion massive par Alexandre le Grand des trésors accumulés par les Achéménides en monnaies d’or et d’argent est un phénomène majeur de l’histoire monétaire mondiale. Par son ampleur, cette augmentation soudaine de la masse monnayée en circulation ne se compare avec aucun autre épisode antique ou médiéval. Ce n’est pas tant l’accroissement du nombre d’études de coins ou de trésors recensés qui nous autorise aujourd’hui à proposer une vision plus nourrie de ce grand dossier historique. Nos idées se sont à ce propos précisées, mais pas profondément modifiées. Sauf que, pour l’étude de la circulation par les trésors, on n’avait pas proposé jusqu’ici de vision globale tant géographique que chronologique, et que – ce faisant – il est permis de mettre en évidence un schéma très clair quant à la question de savoir dans quelle direction est parti l’or monnayé après 250 av. J.-C. Mais il est surtout possible d’agréger au dossier quatre types d’arguments, qui tous paraissent renforcer le même schéma directeur : 1) les analyses métallographiques, en particulier celles portant sur les éléments traces (platine et palladium), 2) une attention renforcée aux rapports entre monnaies et orfèvrerie (pour lesquels Yanis Touratsoglou avait déjà tracé la voie), 3) le traitement du dossier épigraphique, maigre mais fortement instructif, et – last but not least – 4) la prise en compte du prisme plus grossissant que déformant de la Nouvelle Comédie, Plaute en tête, dont – s’agissant des monnaies – les archétypes fonctionnent toujours dans le même sens. L’enquête permet de montrer que, pour l’essentiel, l’or monnayé d’Alexandre a emprunté des circuits courts, à la fois 1) temporellement puisqu’il disparaît pour l’essentiel en une grosse génération, 2) géographiquement puisqu’il semble avoir surtout concerné la Macédoine et les Balkans, et 3) socialement puisqu’il paraît confiner à des archétypes qui ne s’éloignent pas beaucoup de la sphère militaire. Dès lors, et au contraire de ce que les historiens ont généralement soutenu à la suite de Gustav Droysen, il ne semble pas que l’or monnayé d’Alexandre, essentiellement transformé en dépenses de prestige non productives, a beaucoup contribué à créer de la richesse durable par l’augmentation des capacités de production.

This study sets out to explore technological change in the Laurion silver mining industry within the wider debate on the Athenian economy. The study of ancient technology has known a turbulent history, which was greatly determined by primitivistic and substantivistic views, specifically those formulated by Moses Finley in 1973. Under this influence, the debate on economy and technology was immersed in a particularly negative atmosphere: the ancient economy was supposedly characterised by stagnation, and hence, technological advancement could never be accomplished. In spite of the fact that several of these ingrained prejudices have been set aside and technology is now considered an important agent in history, present research is still problematic in two distinct respects. The first problem is the overemphasis on Roman technologies, with the underestimation of Greek realisations as unfortunate corollary. The second issue is the neglect of the archaeological evidence in the scientific discourse on Greek technology. There is no better case study to tackle these issues than the Athenian silver mines at Laurion, located in southeast Attica. A close study of the archaeological evidence has revealed remarkable technological innovations. For instance, miners and metallurgists experimented and improved their technologies continuously. Some of these advances were small and random in nature but others, such as the hydraulic mortars, affected more far-reaching developments that enabled the reorganisation of the silver business. These results challenge the primitivistic/substantivist views that suggest the lack of economic growth and technological advancement in ancient Greece, but will hopefully also form a stimulus for a different, less biased debate on the ancient Greek economy in which archaeology has a more prominent role to play.

Alfred Huet et Alfred-Edouard Geyler, ingénieurs diplômés de l'Ecole centrale des arts et manufactures de Paris, créent en 1849 le premier cabinet spécialisé dans la préparation mécanique des minerais de France. Reconnus internationalement pour leur expertise, ils entreprennent plus de cinquante chantiers dans le monde, parmi lesquels ceux de l'Argentella (Corse) et du Laurion (Grèce). C'est d'abord en Corse qu'ils mettent en place une laverie moderne pour le traitement des minerais de plomb argentifère et puis, en Grèce, qu'ils installent les nouvelles laveries de la Compagnie française des mines du Laurion. Ces réalisations à Argentella et au Laurion restent à nos jours les principaux témoins de leur génie technique et de leur rôle important dans l'évolution de l'industrie métallurgique en France et à l'étranger.
