A Kingdom Between East and West: Commagene
This study refers to the relations between Rome, Parthian  and the Commagene. In addition, the social and cultural textures of the Commagene have been mentioned in this study. I would like to thank the authors for their work on commagene.

From the conquests of Seleukos Nikator, Seleukid rulers presented themselves as heirs to the age-old Near Eastern ideal of universal monarchy. But since their power had started to decline in the 2nd century BC, new claims to 'Great Kingship' were made by the Parthian Arsakids, the Mithradatids of Pontos, the Ptolemies, and conspicuously by Antiochos I of Kommagene, whose house had been bound to the imperial centre by ties of intermarriage and kinship. The same Antiochos famously displayed his royal ancestors in the sanctuary on Nemrut Dağı. While such dynastic expressions are predominantly viewed as fictitious Persian revivalism, it will be argued that the idea of universal monarchy had always been pivotal to Seleukid rule and that with the demise of the Seleukid patriline new claims to empire were based on matrilineal descent. This was possible due to the importance of Seleukid women as transmitters of inheritance and royalty.

Antik Grek dünyasından günümüze kadar gelişimini sürdürmüş olan tiyatro Dionysos alaylarından ortaya çıkarak en gelişmiş sanatlardan birisi konumundadır.
Çalışmamızda da, Antiochia ve Kommagene bölgesinde ortaya çıkarılmış olan tiyatro sahneli mozaiklerin betimlemeleri, özellikleri ve işlevi ele alınmıştır. Çalışmanın en önemli mozaiklerinden birisi Pasiphae ve Daedolus Mozaiği’dir. Bu mozaik konumuzun ana malzemesini oluşturmuştur. Çalışmamızın sonuç kısmında da betimlemiş olduğumuz mozaiklerin değerlendirmeleri ve ne amaçla yapıldığı açıklanmıştır. Böylelikle iki farklı bölgenin mozaik sanatında tiyatro betimlemeleri konusunda çeşitli öneriler getirilmiştir. Önerilerden ilki bazı yapılardan veya mimari parçalardan yola çıkarak aslında bir tiyatro sahnesinden esinlendiğini, mozaiklerdeki sahnelerde gelecek sahneyle ilgili farklı ipuçları verildiği anlaşılmıştır. Ayrıca Pasiphae ve Daedolus Mozaiği’ndeki arka kısımdaki yapı hakkında iki görüşün olduğu bunlardan ilkinin labrynthos olabileceği diğerinin de minos sarayı olabileceği tartışmaları çalışmamızda kendi görüşümüzle de açıklanmıştır.

In 72-69 B.C., L. Lucullus successively captured the most important urban centres of the kingdom of Pontus, and Tigranocerta in Armenia. His army also operated in the kingdom of Commagene und in Upper Mesopotamia. Lucullus’ military campaign was continued by Pompey. We come across incidental information about the scale of robbery and destruction committed by the Roman army (the statue of Autolycus by Sthennis in Sinope, the temple of Ma in Comana, the secret archives of Mithradates VI, the Roman library of Lucullus, the treasures of Darius the Achaemenid). Some objects of the plundered art appeared in public at the triumphal shows of wealth in Rome, which was perfunctorily documented by Pliny the Elder, Appianus of Alexandria and Plutarch (63 and 61 B.C.). Artworks were also acquired by functionaries of the occupying administration from urban communities and private persons through extortion and blackmail. The Roman lawyers and intellectuals worked out a set of skilful legal formulas to justify and legalise the plunder of cultural goods (ius belli, monumentum imperatoris, ornamentum urbis). Cicero, Livy and Plutarch never condemn the robbery of artworks and libraries if they were committed in the name of the Roman state. The fragmentary evidence testifies to the once flourishing literary circles of the kingdoms of Pontus and Commagene (Methrodorus of Scepsis, Athenion, the anonymous authors of inscriptions from Commagene, the epitaphs of the Bosporan kingdom).

Die Ahnengalerien des Antiochos I. auf dem Nemrud Dağı illustrieren ausführlich eine Gegebenheit, die schon bei den meisten älteren Bauprojekten des Königs im Hintergrund stand, nämlich seine Abstammung aus griechischem und iranischem Geschlecht. Das religiöse Anliegen, die Ahnenverehrung, wird unter einem Aspekt vorgetragen, der deutlich auf die Interessen des Grabherrn zielt. So scheint der Ahnenkult in der religiösen Praxis auch nicht die überragende Bedeutung gehabt zu haben, die man nach dem Umfang vermuten könnte, den die Ahnenreliefs innerhalb des Ausstattungsprogramms des Heiligtums auf dem Nemrud Dağı einnehmen. Dafür, dass ihnen so breiter Raum gegeben wurde, scheint eine profane Zielsetzung verantwortlich gewesen zu sein.
Im Verlaufe der Arbeiten am Heiligtum rückte der gleichsam biographische Charakter des Programms immer deutlicher in den Vordergrund. Das ursprüngliche Vorhaben, die Vorfahren abzubilden, wurde dahingehend abgewandelt, dass Antiochos auch verstorbene Verwandte und schließlich sogar lebende Familienangehörige abbilden ließ.
Eine Deszendenz wie die des Antiochos war im kleinasiatischen Raum keineswegs einzigartig, und so stellt sich die Frage, warum sie an der Begräbnisstätte des Königs so ausführlich thematisiert wurde. Eine Erklärung mag sein, dass nur das eigene Grabheiligtum zwanglos Gelegenheit zu einer so umfangreichen Darstellung der persönlichen Verhältnisse bot. Antiochos präsentierte sich selbst in aller Ausführlichkeit als Verkörperung seiner synkretistischen Religionspolitik. Zudem spiegelte er sich im Ruhm der bedeutenden Vorfahren, denen tatsächlich eine Sonderstellung in der für seine Zeit überschaubaren Historie zukam. Hinter der aufwendigen Herstellung der zahlreichen Reliefplatten stand also weniger der Wunsch, die Ahnen durch ein Denkmal noch einmal in außerordentlicher Weise zu ehren, als der Selbstdarstellung eine besondere Note zu geben.

Die Bautätigkeit des Antiochos I. in seinen Heiligtümern umfaßt praktisch seine gesamte Regierungszeit. Schon vor 64 v. Chr. stattete er ein Heiligtum mit der bei Sofraz Köy gefundenen Stele aus. In diese Frühphase gehören auch die von Dritten gestifteten Ehreninschriften fur Antiochos aus Kılafık Hüyük und Ephesos.
Irgendwann nach dem 7.7.62 v.Chr. entstand in Samosata ein Heiligtum, aus dem die Stele Sx des Apollon-Mithras-Helios-Hermes mit ihrer noch ganz griechisch-hellenistischen Ikonographie stammt. Es ist verlockend anzunehmen, dass sich in demselben Heiligtum auch die älteste publizierte Fassung der großen Kultinschriften mit dem Nomos befand.
Danach vollendete Antiochos die von seinem Vater Mithradates I. ummauerte Heiligtumsanlage von Arsameia a. N. und stattete sie mit Bildwerken aus.
Schließlich veranlasste er den Bau seines eigenen Grabheiligtums auf dem Nemrud Dağı. In der Inschrift konnte er mit Stolz darauf hinweisen, dass sein Körper bis ins hohe Alter hinein wohlerhalten geblieben sei. Noch bevor der gesamte Skulpturenschmuck vollendet war, starb Antiochos. Seine Nachkommen vollendeten die Anlage nicht.

ln den Jahren 1988 und 1990 fanden im Zuge des Nemrud Dağı-Projektes zwei Kurzkampagnen statt, die der Vorbereitung der im Grabheiligtum des Antiochos I. vorgesehenen archäologischen Arbeiten dienen sollten. Eine Bestandsaufnahme der im Museum von Adıyaman gelagerten Fragmente und die Sicherung gefährdeter Stücke durch Überführung aus dem Heiligtum ins Museum waren dabei vorrangige Aufgaben. Die Arbeiten vor Ort gaben Gelegenheit zu verschiedenen Beobachtungen. Aus ihnen resultieren Überlegungen, die die Ikonographie der Tuffitreliefs auf Ost- und Westterrasse, die Benennung der dort dargestellten Personen und die Planungen auf der Nordterrasse betreffen. Auf letzterer wurde das Bildprogramm zwar nicht ausgeführt, doch gibt es Anhaltspunkte für Theorien darüber, was hier zur Darstellung kommen sollte.

Located within the borders of Adıyaman today, the ancient city of Perrhe attracts attention with its rock-cut tombs. The studies carried out in the necropolis area in the southeast of the city reveal that Perrhe was inhabited over a long period of time. The Commagene region, that includes Perrhe, was under the control of different states over the course of history, and generally served as a buffer zone against attacks from the east. In consequence, the Romans in particular placed legions at strategic points along the Euphrates, attaching importance to the security of the border regions. In this respect, Perrhe was undoubtedly affected by developments in the region both due to its proximity to the city of Zeugma, a transit point for campaigns to the east, near Euphrates, and its location on an important transport route extending in a north-south direction. The city understood to be more prominent during the reign of the Eastern Roman Empire, then lost importance and over time, was abandoned probably due to the attacks from the Sasanians and Muslims. Although the archaeological studies and surveys conducted in the city and its surrounding areas date back to the end of the 19 th century, there are barely any studies of the social and political history of the city. In this context, the problematic of this study is to create an urban history based upon the ancient sources and to show the political, social and religious background of Perrhe by taking into account the changing conditions. The archaeological history of the city has not been discussed in detail, but the archaeological data has been employed to the extent that it supports our suggestions.

Kommagene; Bereketli Hilal’ın (Fertile Crescent) en kuzey noktalarından, insanoğlunun yerleşik hayat için harekete geçtiği bölgelerden bir tanesidir. Diğer bir tanımlamayla, Kuzey Suriye platosunun yükselerek ulaştığı Anti Torosların Mezopotamya’ya bakan yüzüdür. Kommagene krallığına doğu ve kısmen de güneyde doğal bir sınır oluşturan Fırat Nehri ise Paleolitik Çağ’dan itibaren birçok yaşama hayat vermiştir.

L. Robert suggested that the cycle of epigrams from Book VIII (176–256) of the Palatine An-thology was a lamentation on the destruction of the hierothesion of Nemrud Dağ. The execration epigrams of AP 8, 176–254 are not by Gregory of Nazianz. They belong to the Pagan tradition of the Greek epigrammatic poetry. The collection does not focus on one grave monument, but refers to different burial structures, different settings and in some cases to burial sites, what can be shown through the analysis of the ecphrastic verses in the collection. None of the execration epigrams points to a specified location, which may be suggestive of Kommagene, the Euphrates, and the Taurus Mountains. Some of them are suggestive of a magnificent sanctuary located high up in the mountains (177, 178, 209, 230, 236). There are formal and structural parallels between the execra-tion epigrams AP 8, 176–254 and the royal inscriptions of Kommagene.
