Sirkeli Höyük is one of the largest Bronze and Iron Age sites in Plain Cilicia (Greek Kilikia Pedias, Latin Cilicia Campestris), a fertile, water-rich, alluvial landscape in the south of present-day Turkey. The region was known under various names during the Bronze and Iron Ages: Kawa, Kizzuwatna, Hiyawa, Qawa, Que. Situated at the interface of larger neighbouring regions like Anatolia, Syro-Mesopotamia, the Levant, and Cyprus, its status changed several times. At different times, it represented either an independent principality, a vassal state, or an integral part of great empires like those of the Hittites, the Mittani, the Assyrians, or the Babylonians. As one of the key sites in Cilicia, the research at Sirkeli Höyük aims at shedding light on the colourful cultural history and material expressions of this region.

Tatarlı Höyük is one of the largest settlements of Cilicia in the east of the Ceyhan district of Adana, on the important commercial and military road routes at the western exit of the Amanos. It is connected to Central Anatolia through the Hitit-Kizzuwatna Caravan. The sea connection of the mound is approximately 20 km to the south. It is known that the shoreline and alluvial fillings were inside thousands of years ago. Therefore, during the excavations, data related to Cyprus, Levant and Egypt by sea are obtained in every period starting from the Middle Bronze Age. The last settlements of the mound belong to the Hellenistic Period. Although rural properties can be seen
in the abandoned settlement in the early Roman period, important evidence regarding weaving, especially wine production and trade is obtained. Hellenistic Period data of the mound, whose agricultural economy has also been revealed to a great extent, is extremely important for the Cilicia region. In the Late Iron Age (Akhaimenid) data are obtained that the mound was inhabited for a while. The steles, terracotta figurines and a small number of ceramics dating to this period are new additions to regional archeology.
In the first half of the 1st Millennium BC, while Que city states (Middle Iron Age / Neo Hittite Period) prevailed, many archaeological materials of this period started to be found in Tatarlı Höyük. Among them, various types of amphoras that shed light on the presence of commerce in the city, Black on Red, Cypriot White Slip and Cypriot Bichrome IV group ceramics are the main ones. Stone pots, metal and bone finds
from the same period also stand out.
It contains the most developed settlements of the mound in the 2nd Millennium BC. In the LBA, a sacred city of Kizzuwatna is encountered with a spreading area of 2-3 km2 with its Citadel, the Lower City and its neighborhoods. Apart from its organic relations with the Hittite world, links with Cyprus, Levant and the Aegean region have begun to be identified. Although the MBA strata have not been fully excavated yet, the
finds uncovered in restricted areas reveal that relations with Central Anatolia began, although they were heavily related to Northern Syria during this period.
The layers of EBA and Chalcolithic Age have not been excavated yet. The seals especially in the Ubeyd Period, which were found in some areas, are the harbingers of the fact that there were strong settlements in the mound during these periods. Data from the Neolithic period identified at the foot of the mound provide new contributions for the region and Anatolian archaeology.

Doğu Akdenizde Adana’nın Ceyhan ilçesinde yer alan Tatarlı Höyük’te, 2007 yılından bu yana multidisipliner
kazı çalışmaları yürütülmektedir. Makale, 2016 yılı sonunda AY 186 açmasının doğu kesiminde kazılan bir
seramik fırın üzerinde yapılan arkeometrik araştırmalara odaklanmaktadır. Seramik fırını, Geç Tunç Çağı
(MÖ 1450-1200)’na ait seramik malzeme grubu ile ilişkilidir. Fırında bol miktarda kırık kap parçaları ve
seramik cüruflar bulunmuştur. Çalışmada, arkeometrik karakterizasyon için seramik buluntular arasından üç
adet seramik cüruf seçilmiştir. Bu cüruflar morfolojik ve mineralojik karakterizasyonları belirlemek amacıyla
optik mikroskop (OM) ve X-ışını kırınımı (XRD) yardımıyla analiz edilmiştir.
AY 186/1, AY 186/7 ve AY 186/11 kodlu örneklerin XRD analizleri ile kuvars (SiO2), labradorit ((Ca,Na)[Al
(Al, Si)Si2O8]), diyopsit (CaMg[Si2O6]), albit (NaAlSi3O8), anortit (CaAl2Si2O8) ve ojit ((Ca,Na) (Mg,Fe,Al,Ti)
[(Si, Al)2O6]) minerallerinin varlığı saptanmıştır. Cüruflarda yeni mineral oluşumların varlığı, seramiklerin
fırınlama sıcaklıkları ve hammaddelerinin mineralojik bileşimi ile ilgilidir. Çalışmada tespit edilen bu fazlara
göre seramik curufların pişirim sıcaklığının yaklaşık 900-950 °C olduğu tahmin edilmektedir. Örneklerde
vitrifikasyon düzeyinin yüksek olduğu görülmektedir. Ayrıca, seramik cüruflarda önemli miktarda kapalı
gözenekler tespit edilmiştir. Bu gözenekler kullanılan hammaddelere, fırın atmosferine, fırında pişirme
sıcaklığına ve fırının sürekli kullanımına bağlı olarak gelişmektedir.
Çalışmada sunulan bu sonuçlar, Çukurova Üniversitesi tarafından finanse edilen “Tatarlı Höyük’te Hitit
Dönemi’ne Ait Bir Seramik Atölyesinden Çıkan Bazı Buluntuların Karakterizasyonu” başlıklı geniş araştırma
projemizin bir parçasıdır (Proje ID: 9673).

Tatarlı Höyüğün 11. sezonu olan 2018 yılı çalışmaları, 02 Temmuz - 31
Aralık tarihleri arasında yaklaşık 5 ay devam etmiştir.
2018 yılı çalışmalarımızın ilk amacı, son iki yılda olduğu gibi yine GTÇ
tapınaklarının batısında 2015 yılında ortaya çıkmaya başlayan ve bizim C Yapısı
olarak tanımladığımız yapının planını ve işlevini ortaya koyabilmektir.
Amaç doğrultusunda höyüğün üst kültür katmanlarını oluşturan ve Doğu
Kilikya için önemli veriler elde ettiğimiz Hellenistik Dönem tabakalarında
çalışmalarımız yoğunlaşmıştır.

In this study, the daggers found in Adana -Ceyhan Tatarlı Höyük excavations in 2012 and 2015 and a shafthole axe found in 2015 are discussed. The analogues of this weapon group, which can be dated to the 2nd Millennium BC, can be seen in Anatolia, Cyprus and
Syria-Palestine. Considering the dating of this group of artifacts, architectural remains and other small finds greatly assist with the Tatarlı Höyük metal weapon group too. Therefore, these weapons provide new information about Tatarlı Höyük's cultural relations with Central Anatolia and Northern Syria.

This article documents a Late Bronze Age II (1450-1200 B.C.) pottery kiln unearthed at Tatarlı Höyük, Adana (Turkey). This pyrotechnical installation, with its associated ceramic assemblage and production remains, offers an overview of the pottery kiln technologies in Cilicia during the end of the Late Bronze Age. The typological features of the Tatarlı Höyük pottery kiln presents encouraging similarities to northern Syrian and Mesopotamian updraft pottery kiln technologies rather than those of central Anatolia, even though the political and social influence of the Hittite Empire has been documented by ceramic and seal collections of the settlement.

Bu makalede Adana Ceyhan Ovası’nda yer alan Tatarlı Höyük’te ortaya çıkarılarak, Geç Tunç Çağı II’ye (MÖ 1450-1200) tarihlenen bir keramik fırını konu edilmektedir. Beraberinde bulunan cüruf ve keramik parçaları ile birlikte bu piroteknik ünite, Geç Tunç Çağı’nın son dönemlerinde Kilikya Bölgesi’ndeki keramik fırını teknolojisini değerlendirme olanağı sağlamaktadır. Tatarlı Höyük keramik fırınının teknolojik
ve tipolojik ögeleri, Kuzey Suriye ve Kuzey Mezopotamya ile önemli benzerlikler göstermekle beraber, İç Anadolu’da yer alan Hitit başkenti ve dönemin Ege Dünyası ile benzer bir ilişki gözlemlenememektedir. Buradan hareketle bu çalışmada, keramik ve mühür külliyatı ile MÖ 14-12.yy.’da Hitit İmparatorluğu ile yakın politik ve sosyal ilişki içerisinde olduğu belirlenen Tatarlı Höyük’ün, üretim birimleri bakımından daha ziyade Kuzey Suriye ve Kuzey Mezopotamya bölgeleri ile olan teknolojik ilişkisinin muhtemel sebepleri de tartışılmaktadır.
