""""""""""Joseph Forrester, a Scot born in 1805, worked with his brother as a silversmith in London during the late 1820s. In 1829 he was caught stealing diamonds, was sentenced to death, but transported for Life to Van Diemen’s Land. He was assigned to David Barclay, a Hobart watchmaker and jeweller, and developed a reputation for the most competent silversmith in the colony for a number of years. On being granted a Conditional Pardon he married, established his own business, and for several years seems to have enjoyed a degree of success. Hostility towards ex-convicts in Van Diemen’s Land and growing business prospects in Melbourne saw him move to Melbourne in 1847 where he undertook commissions for a number of retailers including Charles Brentani. In 1848 his wife died in suspicious circumstances, although an inquest found she died through drowning in the Yarra River. Forrester then married Ann Willis who ran a pawnbroking shop. She died soon afterwards and he went into a brief watchmaking and jewellery partnership before deciding to return to Scotland. Arriving in London he was informed by his sister that, after 26 years, his relatives would not welcome him home. He caught the next ship back to Melbourne where he moved to the country and eventually died a lonely and forgotten death. His early silverwork sells for hundreds of thousands of dollars today and has been written about in Art Gallery and Antiques journals. However, never has Forrester’s life been presented in the detail it is given here.

In 1829, Joseph Forrester was sentenced to death. After being caught stealing diamond ring. His family immediately wrote petitions to Members of Parliament and to King George IV—but was the object of their concern Joseph and his predicament, or was it the reputation of the family? Nevertheless, saved from the hangman, Joseph was transported for life to Van Diemen’s Land, and again the family sent petitions. He established a business in Hobart Town and they supported him with finance and tools of trade. However, when Joseph decided to return home after twenty-seven years would the convict’s return be as Charles Dickens described it in Pickwick Papers, ‘No face of welcome, no look of forgiveness, no house to receive, no hand to help him’?

Much of the history of early colonial Victoria has been overlooked with many historians and readers of history assuming not much of importance happened before the gold rushes of 1851. Similarly much of the story of those who came to the Port Phillip district as ex-convicts before 1851 has also been overlooked, or even deliberately forgotten. Many late 20th century studies of both the period and the convicts have tended towards generalization in the telling of the historical story, and towards conclusions based upon statistics. The brief and vague treatment so often given to this period, and these people, has sometimes been attributed to the apparent difficulty in obtaining suitable and sufficient source materials.

This project tells the life stories of two men who were convicted of robbery in England and transported to Van Diemen’s Land, one in 1829 and the other in 1835, and follows their attempts to create a respectable life for themselves through a variety of business, marriage, family and social relationships, first in Van Diemen’s Land and then in Port Phillip. The project investigates these men’s motivations and methods in concealing and deconstructing their prior identity as a convict, an identity that was imposed upon them as punishment for the crimes they committed.

The study demonstrates that the life of the period, and in particular the lives of those who were convicts, can be recovered in great detail through diligent research largely using sources that have been made available in digitized or online form.
