In Hong Kong, suicides and other experiences of psychosocial challenges among youths have become increasing social concerns. Existing literature suggests that authoritarian parenting practices, including the high degree of parental strictness and lower provision of autonomy for school-aged children, worsen the psychosocial well-being among children.1,2 Hong Kong parents emphasize the importance of traditional Confucian values, which notably necessitate children’s academic excellence, as well as conformity with parental expectations and control. This article evaluates existing studies and examines the relationships between authoritarian parenting practices and children’s psychosocial well-being. This article also addresses autonomy-granting parenting approaches, an emerging parenting style in Hong Kong, as an alternative parenting approach, and studies the relationships between such approaches and children’s psychosocial development. The present article suggests measures, in accordance with evaluated findings, for adjusting parental practices within Hong Kong Chinese families for the purpose of improving children’s psychosocial well-being.

ABSTRACT This article explores the economic and family experiences of first- and second-generation Hong Kong Chinese in the Republic of Ireland. Although they are the earliest Chinese group in Ireland, their lived experiences have been overshadowed by a large influx of mainland Chinese since the end of the 1990s. This is the first empirical study in Ireland that makes the complex lived experiences of this migrant group visible. Their cross-generational economic performance and value of family is illustrated in diaspora theory. The findings are drawn from two sources: qualitative interviews with forty-one interviewees across two generations, and documentary research, including official records. Besides economic contributions to Irish society, the data highlights the complex and interrelated family issues. The high level of cohesion in Hong Kong Chinese families was reflected in their family views. The study also contributes to understandings of new diverse global migratory movements.

Purpose
This study aims to develop the Chinese version of the Sexual Function after Gynecologic Illness Scale (SFAGIS) and to establish its psychometric properties in Hong Kong Chinese patients with gynecological cancer.

Methods
A Chinese version of SFAGIS was developed using the Brislin model of translation and guidelines for cross-cultural adaptation of scales. The content validity and semantic equivalence were assessed by an expert panel. The translated version of SFAGIS was administered to 150 Hong Kong Chinese women with gynecological cancer to test the scale’s psychometric properties and to assess its feasibility. The convergent validity of the Chinese scale was tested by correlating it with the Chinese version of the sex relations subscale of the Psychosocial Adjustment to Illness Scale Self-Report (PAIS-SR).

Results
The average completion time for the Chinese SFAGIS was 16.2 ± 6.6 min. The internal consistency of the Chinese SFAGIS was 0.93. Test–retest reliability was also high with an interclass correlation coefficient 0.76. A Pearson product–moment correlation found strong correlations among the Chinese SFAGIS and the Chinese version of the sex relations subscale of the PAIS-SR, indicating that both scales measure the same as or has a similar construct.

Conclusions
The Chinese version of SFAGIS is a reliable and valid instrument which can be used in clinical practice and research for assessing sexual function problems in Chinese patients with gynecological cancer and to identify those in need of attention.
