History of Railways

On 28 July 1914, the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy declared war on Serbia after its negative response to the ultimatum. Partial mobilization began on July 28 at midnight towards Serbia, where the first front of the Great War was opened. It required a new organizational framework and organizational work from the railway of the Monarchy. In peace time, the Hungarian railways were built up of 12 business management departments (railway headquarters) led by the Minister of Commerce, or subordinated to a separate board, or their own administrative organization. The commitment of the railway network for military purposes was managed in peacetime by a joint 5/Eisenbahnbüro (EB) department of the Ministry of War and the Chiefs of Staff, which had 27 railway commanding centre subordinated to the Monarchy, therefore the entire Hungarian network as well. With the outbreak of war, the 5/E.B. dissolved and military railway authorities were established while the existing railway headquarters started their operation with extended competence. The Central Transportation Management, which was established at that time, led the entire railway service during the mobilization and then to the stations assigned by the chief of military traffic in the hinterland. Subsequently, further transport was carried out by the Field Transportation Management. The Central Transportation Management was the accurate developer, implementer and control body of the planned and ordered rail transport transports with national general and partial competence in all rail transport issues and with full right of disposal. It was divided into a military, a railway department, a locomotive and a car coach management. It was also subdivided into regional and local rail transport, supply and service units. The aim of my presentation is to present the military organizational transformation of the Hungarian railways and their operation during the war period.

A vasút történetével kapcsolatos első feljegyzések és írások már a 19. század első felében megjelentek Magyarországon, ugyanakkor a közlekedési eszköz-társadalmi-hatásainak vizsgálatához még időnek kellett eltelnie. A vasút történészi szinten sokáig nem képezte szaktudományos kutatás tárgyát, így leginkább az adott ágazatban dolgozó és az ihletüket onnan merítő személyek írtak róla. Emiatt a Magyarországon olvasható munkák nagy része sokkal inkább koncentrál a technikai paraméterekre, mint a vasút társadalmi és mentalitással kapcsolatos hatásaira. Manapság azonban mind hazai, mind egyetemes viszonylatban egyre többen vizsgálják a vasút komplex hatásait, belehelyezve az azt körülölelő tájba, és átformálva a korábban róla alkotott képet. Jelen tanulmány a magyar vasúttörténet-írás első munkáitól kiindulva a társadalomtörténeti vonatkozású - hazánkban fellelhető - írásokra koncentrál.

Despite the dramatic effect of the railway age on the natural surroundings, it was not seen necessarily as destructive to nature. Railways were both the epitome of progress as well as integral features in pastoral landscapes. This seemingly paradoxical perception of railways is partially explained by historicising the "naturalisation" of the German train system. This article describes the rapid transformation of the German train from a symbol of dynamic industrialisation to an integral part of the landscape. Visual images, such as lithographs and postcards, were the catalysts in this process. Railway companies, local elites and travel guide publishers promoted the process of "naturalisation" for economic reasons, but the iconography was a result of visual discourse in nineteenth-century German culture. This paper shows that unlike American, British and French depictions of railways, German artists portrayed a railway system, which rather than conquering nature, was blending peacefully into an existing natural landscape.

A könyv az északnyugat-dunántúli térség egyes helyiérdekű vasútjainak – történelmi szaktudományos kutatások tárgyát eddig kevésbé képező – gazdasági és társadalmi hatásait vizsgálja. E vicinálisok: a Sopron–pozsonyi, a Sopron–kőszegi és a Fertővidéki HÉV. A módszertani keretek felvázolása, a primer forrásadottságok és a vasút historiográfiai áttekintése után először Magyarország vasútépítés-történetével foglalkozom. Majd bemutatom a térség központjainak, városainak fejlődését a kötöttpályás közlekedési eszköz megjelenésével való összefüggésben, külön koncentrálva az azzal összefüggő területfejlesztési elképzelésekre és a regionális központok kialakulására is a 19. századtól kezdődően, ezzel megteremtve a kutatáshoz szükséges elméleti keretet. Egyetemes és országos kitekintéssel, de a szűk keretek miatt lényegre törően foglalkozom a vasút létrehozásával, annak előfeltételeivel, fejlődésével és társadalomra gyakorolt hatásaival. Ebből próbálok arra következtetni, hogy melyek a vasút megjelenésének legfőbb mozgatórugói a vizsgált területen. Ezután az érintett HÉV-ek építéstörténetéről, funkciójuk megváltozásáról, a területi és demográfiai tényezőkre gyakorolt hatásukról kívánok képet adni, tehát elhelyezem a vicinálisokat az őket érintő, körülvevő tájban. Vizsgálódásom a fent megjelölt területből fakadóan főként az adott helyiérdekű vasutak mentén húzódó településekre fókuszál. Ezek közül kiemeltem néhányat, amelyek esetében részletesebben megvizsgálom a helyiérdekű vasút megjelenésének hatásait. Célom a „vasparipa” e falvakra és városokra gyakorolt területi és demográfiai változásokat, illetve infrastrukturális fejlesztéseket előidéző hatásait bemutatni. A korabeli legmodernebb közlekedési eszköz egy-egy újabb területen való megjelenése nemcsak technika-, hanem jelentős gazdaság- és társadalomtörténeti változást is eredményezett.

В статье анализируется влияние Финляндской железной дороги на взаимосвязь Петербурга и Гельсингфорса (Хельсинки) с момента постройки до революции 1917 г. В качестве критериев рассматриваются результаты миграции населения между двумя столицами в указанный период, данные по перевозкам по железной дороге, картина взаимоотношений финляндского и русского меньшинств в обоих столицах и разница в их статусе. Общий фоном взаимоотношений между Великим княжеством и столицей империи служит рост национального самосознания в Финляндии.
The article studies the influence of the Finland railway on ties between St. Petersburg and Helsingfors (Helsinki) from the moment of its construction to the Revolution of 1917. The results of migration between two capitals in the specified period, railway transportation data, relations of Finland’s and Russian minorities in both capitals and difference of their status are considered as main criteria. The growth of national consciousness serves as the general background of relations between the grand Duchy and the capital of the Empire.

A 2. világháború után a két nagyhatalom ‒ USA és Szovjetunió ‒ között egyre feszültebbé vált a kapcsolat. Az utóbbi számára nyugati katonai előtérnek minősült Magyarország, amely így az 1949-től fizikailag is megjelenő, majd 1956 után sokáig a két világrendet elválasztó vasfüggöny keleti oldalára került. Ez az Ausztria felé futó magyar vasútvonalakat elméletileg elvágta a Nyugattól. Gyakorlatban azonban ez nem így történt. A Budapest–Győr–Hegyeshalom–Bécs, a Székesfehérvár–Szombathely–Szentgotthárd‒Graz és a Győr‒Sopron‒Ebenfurt vonalakon többé-kevésbé zavartalanul folyt a közlekedés 1956-ig is.

A közlekedés forradalmaként aposztrofált vasút már a 19. század első felében elérte Magyarországot is. A vonalak száma és hosszúsága azonban csak a század második felében növekedett dinamikusan. Komárom és Esztergom vármegye földrajzi elhelyezkedésének köszönhette, hogy meglehetősen hamar tranzitvasútvonalakat kapott a két főváros, Bécs és Budapest között a Duna két partján is. Itt azonban nem állt meg a két vármegyét érintő vaspályák kiépítése,hiszen a terület nagyobb ipari és kereskedelmi központjait a Nagy Háború kitörésének idejére elérte a vasút. Jelen tanulmányban először az egyetemes és magyar vasúttörténetbe ágyazva mutatom be a területet érintő ‒ normál nyomtávolságú ‒ vasútépítéseket a teljesség igénye nélkül, majd a Nagy Háború lezárását követően vizsgálom meg a vasutaknak a későbbi új határok kijelölésében játszott szerepét kiemelten fókuszálva itt is Komárom és Esztergom vármegyékre. Ezt követően pedig a Trianon utáni vasúti – nemzetközi ‒ közlekedés megindulását, regenerálódását ismertetem lényegre törően.

Depuis la première moitié du XIX siècle des nombreux essais pour établir des chemins de fer ont été entrepris au Mexique. De cette manière, au long d’un siècle et demi furent implantés plusieurs chemins de fer qui ont contribué à la transformation de l’économie et de la société où ils ont été installés, en changeant les relations de ceux qu’y habitaient et les paysages. Malgré l’importance des chemins de fer, surtout à partir des dernières années du XX siècle, les établissements appartenant aux chemins de fer ont commencé à être affectés par un processus de dégradation plus accéléré. Ce travail cherche à approfondir sur l’histoire des chemins de fer qui ont été installés à l’État de Tlaxcala, et tente à comprendre comment ils ont dialogué et changé les régions où ils ont été construits, quelles sont les caractéristiques des traces qu’ils sont laissé, et comment est possible de les revaloriser et les sauvegarder.

Since the first half of the XIX century numerous attempts to establish railways had place in Mexico. In this way throughout a century and a half the railways have contributed to the transformation of the economy and society where they had been established, changing the relationships of those who inhabit there and the landscapes. Despite of the importance of the railways, particularly from the last years of XX century, the establishments belonging to the railways began to be affected by a more accelerated degradation process. This work aims to deepen into the history of the railways which were established on the State of Tlaxcala, and looks to understand how they have dialogued and changed the regions where they were built, which are the features of the traces that they have left, and how it is possible to revalorize and safeguard them.

O objetivo deste artigo é reconsiderar o papel do sistema mercantilista como uma causa determinante para a ascensão do Império Britânico à hegemonia. Eu defino o sistema mercantilista como um conjunto de capacidades sociotécnicas nos setores de transporte e armamentos. Na primeira parte, mostro como a disputa britânica pela hegemonia foi desde seu início baseada nas suas capacidades de organizar e assegurar um sistema internacional de comércio em grande escala. Na parte dois, esse sistema mercantilista, vemos como a construção ferroviária respondia perfeitamente a interesses britânicos industriais e de serviços. Entretanto, sua difusão também foi o ponto de partida para países como os Estados Unidos e a Alemanha organizarem economias nacionais em escalas maiores do que seria possível em um mundo onde o transporte marítimo era a única tecnologia para o transporte eficiente em grande escala. Na parte três, essas novas escalas organizacionais juntam-se às inovações militares do período, que explicam a retomada da colonização do fim do século. Enquanto o sistema mercantilista britânico nunca perdeu seu caráter hegemônico nos mares, o declínio relativo da hegemonia do Império Britânico resulta de uma mudança na natureza dos espaços onde se dava a concorrência economia e a rivalidade política, das economias marítimas para as terrestres. Palavras-chave: Mercantilismo, Império Britânico, Hegemonia Britânica, Ferrovias, Guerra Introdução O interesse acadêmico pelo estudo do mercantilismo cresceu consideravelmente nos últimos anos. As contribuições de Steve Pincus, 1 Lars Magnusson, 2 Philip Stern e Carl Wennerlind 3 recolocaram as polêmicas da definição, temporalidade e validade do conceito de mercantilismo. Os autores concordam que ele não foi uma doutrina coesa. Segundo eles, o que se convencionou entender como " mercantilismo " foi na verdade um conjunto diverso de discursos e práticas que não conseguimos de fato entender sem analisarmos cada caso à luz do seu contexto histórico. Meu argumento segue as principais contribuições do debate historiográfico contemporâneo sobre o mercantilismo, dando grande ênfase ao contexto das ideias e práticas a ele associadas. Na medida em que os autores mercantilistas eram também homens práticos envolvidos com o objeto sobre o qual escreviam, como líderes de negócios ou oficiais de governo, o pensamento desenvolvido por eles era inevitavelmente atrelado às funções que eles exerciam. 4 Logo, quaisquer argumentos quanto à ascensão ou queda das ideias ou práticas mercantilistas devem também lidar com o problema da ascensão ou queda em importância do tipo de atividade e ambiente que em primeiro lugar habilitaram aqueles discursos.

After World War II, the different agendas of the two superpowers (United States and Soviet Union) led to the establishment of two world orders separated by the Iron Curtain. Hungary had a geopolitical importance for the Soviet Union, as a military buffer zone. After the Soviet defeat of the 1956 revolution, it remained within the Eastern bloc. The Iron Curtain, which unveiled physically in 1949, in theory, blocked the Hungarian railways towards Austria. In practice, however, things were slightly different. The Budapest-Győr-Hegyeshalom(-Vienna) section of the Hungarian State Railways (MÁV) was considered the main railway artery of Hungary. In the Szombathely-Szentgotthárd(-Graz) railway, traffic was uninterrupted, but with a smaller volume. The main line of the Győr-Sopron-Ebenfurth Railway (GYSEV), inaugurated in 1875 and jointly owned by Austria and Hungary, and the Fertővidéki HÉV (Local Railways) under its management, were even more exceptional. Therefore, the railway of the monarchic days and the local railways under its management did not cease to exist but continued to operate between two countries and two world-systems, in a unique fashion. In this article, I aim to illustrate that the Iron Curtain was not a hermetic seal between Austria and Hungary. There were some gaps in the wall, the most obvious of which was the railway that was used for illegal migration and smuggling. My study focuses on those three main lines, considering that they were the main arteries for high-volume cross-border traffic.

Imperial Military Transportation in British Asia sheds light on attempts by royal engineers to introduce innovations devised in the UK to wartime India, Iraq, and Burma, as well as the initial resistance of local groups of colonial railwaymen to such metropolitan innovations. Michael W. Charney looks at the role of the railways in the First Burma Campaign to show how some kinds of military technology – as an example of imperial knowledge – faced resistance due to 1930s-era colonial insularity. The delay this caused significantly compromised the early defense of the colony when the Japanese invaded in 1942. Charney examines the efforts made by one engineer in particular to revive the railways and shows how this effort was responsible for the development of a truly imperial technology that was suitable for extra-European contexts and finally won acceptance in India. Incorporating newly accessible primary source material from the files of the military Director of Transportation during the Campaign, this book highlights a hitherto unfilled gap in the archival record and explores an ignored but crucial aspect of the 1942 Japanese invasion of Burma. A month after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife in Sarajevo, the war mobilization to Serbia began at 0 a.m. on 29th July, 1914, which implied the outbreak of the Great War. In 1914, two fronts of it were opened, in which the Kingdom of Hungary was also concerned. One in the southern direction in the Balkans, the other in the east. The multifront war and the ever-increasing transport of troops and supplies generated unbearable traffi c on the railroads by the end of the year. As a result, traffi c management slowed down by the beginning of the winter, and success also lagged behind in the battlefi elds. The fi rst year of the war already posed great challenge to the Hungarian railways, but in 1915, with the entry of Italy, another front opened. Although it only aff ected Austria directly within the Monarchy, it placed further heavy burden on the Hungarian railway network due to cross-mobilization. At that time, the German and Austrian-Hungarian corps managed to break through the Russian front fi rst at Gorlice and regain Eastern Galicia, and then in the autumn a coordinated off ensive against Serbia was launched with the help of Bulgaria. The successes were only overshadowed by the operation of the railway. The ongoing war posed an increasing and complicated task on the Hungarian railways, specifi cally on the railway employees and the railway network. In the summer of 1916, the coordinated off ensive of the Entente, led by Brusilov, broke through the Eastern Front. This marked the end of the Monarchy's series of success. All this time, the Hungarian railways entirely served the needs of military and civilian transport.

The colonial issue was not a Portuguese exclusive, its European counterparts were equally challenged with the growing international criticism of colonial sovereignty. However, for the democratic powers the management of the colonial dossier was more complex because, among other things, they were subject to greater scrutiny by the press and public opinion. Cinema emerges in the post-war period as a powerful instrument for (counter) information used by the European colonial states. Portugal will be no exception. In fact, the use of cinema by the Portuguese authorities for colonial propaganda is the subject of this article. With the following essay, we aim to show how the post-war "winds of change" have altered the paradigm of Portuguese Colonial Cinema and how films about “traveling”, “sightseeing” and “tourist attractions” represented much more than that.

Az 1956-os forradalom és szabadságharc szovjet leverésével nyilvánvalóvá vált, hogy Magyarország a Keleti Blokkon belül marad. A vizsgált fő vasúti ütőereken gyakorlatilag zavartalanul folyt a közlekedés az ismételten leereszkedő vasfüggöny ellenére. A GYSEV mint magánvasút és a kezelésében lévő vicinális jogilag sem szűnt meg, sőt, a maga egyediségében működött tovább nemcsak a két országon, hanem a két világrendszeren keresztül is. A tanulmány célja annak bemutatása, hogy a vasfüggöny nem zárta el a két tábort hermetikusan egymástól, hanem voltak rések rajta, amelyek közül a legnyilvánvalóbb a vasút volt.

Since its inception, the railway has been intimately connected with mining. On one hand, the arrival of trains permitted the large-scale development of numerous mines far from the sea, with the railways facilitating supply delivery to the mine as well as the transport of its products to ports or industrial centres and other interior points. On the other hand, railways depended on the mines being provided with raw materials and fuel. Thus, during the 19th and 20th centuries, a close relationship was established between the two industries, often reflected in the capital invested. In this article, we study this relationship using the example of the British-worked Cerro Muriano mine (Córdoba, Spain).

A 19. század második felében induló imperialista békés hatalmi versengés végét 1914-ben Ferenc Ferdinánd trónörökös és feleségének szarajevói merénylete zárta el. Ezt követően nem sokkal az Osztrák–Magyar Monarchia hadüzenetet küldött Szerbiának, és elrendelte a mozgósítást a Balkán felé. Ezt az arra kiformálódott két katonai tömb egymásnak küldött hadüzenetei követték, majd Európát elborították a harcok, kitört a Nagy Háború. A technikai fejlődés eredményeként a mobilizáció ekkor már főként vasúton zajlott, amely ezáltal fontos stratégiai eszközzé vált. A kötöttpályás közlekedés átalakult, hadi menetrendeket vezettek be. Újfajta, a harcokat segítő, megkönnyítő, vagy
éppen a sebesülteket ellátó, szállító szerelvények jelentek meg a síneken. Jelen tanulmány a kórház-, mentő-, fürdő-, üdítő-, ivóvíz- és páncélvonatok történetének ismertetésére tesz kísérletet az Osztrák–Magyar Monarchia szempontjából, főként a Magyar Királyságra fókuszálva, de egyetemes kitekintéssel is az első világháború éveiben.

This paper gives more attention to methodological matters than to academic results. We believe that our most distinct contribution as archaeologists to a journal of written sources historians (Faces da História) is to show how our disciplinary research techniques and tools work, as well as to promote the use of other kinds of sources of information (the material evidence). Thus, this article aims to defend the role of Archaeology in the study of the recent past. In doing so, we take as a case study the railway workshops built by the Companhia Paulista de Estradas de Ferro in Jundiaí (São Paulo, Brazil) from the end of the 19th century onwards (today FEPASA Complex). More specifically, we pay attention to its pavements. Our final goal is to demonstrate in a practical and simple way that the cross-reading of all available sources of information in connection to space can provide a different perspective on Brazilian industrialization.

Az északnyugat-dunántúli térség két jelentős, korábbi szabad királyi városát, Sopront Kőszeggel összekötő vasút terve már a meglévő bécsújhely (ma: Wiener Neustadt, Ausztria)-soproni vonal Nagykanizsa irányába történő továbbvezetése alkalmával felmerült. Ez az elképzelés ebben a formában nem vált valóra, hiszen a Déli Vasút végül Kőszeg elkerülésével Szombathelyen keresztül vezette a vonalát Nagykanizsára, amelyet egész hosszában 1865-ben adtak át a forgalomnak. A két város vaspályán való egymáshoz kapcsolásának terve ezt követően jó időre lekerült a napirendről. Majd 1873-ban, a gazdasági recesszió évében ismét napvilágot látott egy, ezt a viszonylatot preferáló ötlet. Ürményi Pál vállalkozó és érdektársai egy Soprontól Kőszegen, Szombathelyen, Csáktornyán (ma: Cakovec, Horvátország), Varasdon (ma: Varazdin, Horvátország) és Sziszeken (ma: Sisak, Horvátország) át egészen az akkori török határig vezetendő vonalra kaptak előmunkálati engedélyt a kereskedelemügyi minisztertől. Ez azonban hamar meghiúsult, hiszen a gazdasági válság ideje alatt nem volt igazából realitása egy ilyen komoly vaspálya kiépítésének.

Ferenc Ferdinándnak és feleségének szarajevói meggyilkolása után egy hónappal, 1914. július 29-én 0 órától megindult a háborús mozgósítás Szerbia felé, ezzel kitört a Nagy Háború. Az 1914-es évben két, a Magyar Királyságot is érintő frontja nyílt meg. Az egyik déli irányban a Balkánon, a másik keleten. A többfrontos háború és a folyamatos növekvő csapat-és utánpótlás-szállítás az év végére elviselhetetlen forgalmat generált a vasúton. Ennek eredményéként lassult a forgalom lebonyolítása a tél kezdetére, ráadásul a harctereken is elmaradtak a sikerek. Már a háború első éve is komoly próba elé állította a magyar vasutakat, azonban 1915-ben Olaszország belépésével még egy front is megnyílt. Ez bár a Monarchián belül közvetlenül Ausztriát érintette, a magyar vasúthálózatra újabb nagy terhet rótt a keresztirányú mobilizáció miatt. Ekkor a német és osztrák-magyar hadtesteknek először Gorlicénél sikerült áttörniük az orosz frontot és Kelet-Galíciát visszafoglalniuk, majd ősszel megindult az összehangolt offenzíva Bulgária segítségével Szerbia ellen. A sikereket csak a vasút működése árnyékolta be. Az elhúzódó háború egyre nagyobb és nehezen megoldható feladat elé állította a magyar vasutakat, konkrétan a vasúti alkalmazottakat és a vasúthálózatot is. 1916 nyarán az antant összehangolt offenzívája Bruszilov vezetésével áttörte a keleti frontot. Ezzel a Monarchia sikeridőszaka lezárult. A magyar vasutak ezalatt mindvégig kiszolgálták a hadi és polgári szállítási igényeket. Kulcsszavak: Nagy Háború, mobilizáció, gorlicei áttörés, Bruszilov-offenzíva, vasút Bevezetés 1914. július 28-án az Osztrák-Magyar Monarchia proklamálta a háborút Szerbia ellen, ami egy láncreakciót indított el először Európában, majd a világon. A két hatalmi tömb, az antant és a központi hatalmak között kitört a háború, ami akkor még a Nagy Háború nevet viselte. Az esemény legfontosabb stratégiai-logisztikai szállítási eszközévé a vasút vált. Ezen keresztül bonyolódott a mobilizáció, az utánpótlás szállítása, a sebesültek hadszíntérről való elszállítása stb. Magyarország a Monarchia részeként főként a galíciai és a balkáni front felé szállította a hadtesteket, az utánpótlást és az ellátmányt. Az 1914-es esztendő azonban mindkét fronton vereséggel zárult. A következő évben, 1915-ben fordult a kocka, a német haderők Galícia és Balkán felé való átcsoportosítása a központi hatalmak előrenyomulását eredményezte. Ennek első állomása a gorlicei áttörés volt. A lendület 1916 nyaráig kitartott, ekkor azonban Bruszilov vezetésével a keleti frontot áttörték az oroszok. Tanulmányom célja a magyar vasutak működésének a bemutatása ebben, a tengelyhatalmak által sikerperiódusnak tekintet háborús időszakban.

Depois de três décadas de hesitações, avanços e recuos da política ferroviária do Fontismo, Portugal enveredou decididamente na construção de caminhos de ferro na década de 1880. Neste período, a rede nacional conheceu o maior crescimento da sua história (passada e futura) e expandiu‑se inclusivamente até às colónias. Neste artigo, iremos analisar este processo histórico recorrendo aos conceitos de determinismo, sublime e nacionalismo tecnológico.

After three decades with different hesitations, ups, and downs, the
Portuguese strategy for railway building took decisive steps in the 1880s. In this decade, the network witnessed the largest growth in its history (past and future) and it extended to the overseas colonies. In this paper, we will analyse this historical process, using the concepts of technological determinism, technological sublime, and technological nationalism.

The postal and railroad infrastructures have long been seen as part of the nationalization process in the nineteenth century. Both transformed society dramatically by giving the opportunity for spatial movement to the general population. Unlike other political modes of nationalization, the railway and the post were meaningful only as long as they were used by the public. Only then do they create a form of voluntary ties between people. Therefore, their territorial effectiveness had an immediate connection to their importance in the creation of the modern national societies.
However, most research on the topic had focused on the general appearance of these two facilities, such as uniforms, stations and stamps, and not on the actual spatial deployment. Examining the spatial topology of both infrastructures suggests a new understanding of their complex relationship with nationalization and territorialization processes. Not a subordinate one, conforming blindly to a regimented national plan, but rather an independent route, relying on social, historic and geographic connections. This type of analysis focuses on the territories left out, the gaps created by these infrastructures, and the consequences caused by it. In this sense, they do not just connect people, but also disconnect them.
The emergence of mass communication and transportation networks during the nineteenth century coincided with the evolution of newly independent German states, such as Bavaria, Saxony, Hanover, Württemberg and Baden that gained independence in 1815. Deconstructing the gradual development of their postal and railway networks, prior to the German unification of 1871, provides a reason for the different futures of each of these states, in terms of internal integration; a reasoning which relies on the ability to communicate as a fundamental building block of modern national communities. Moreover, this infrastructural analysis depicts a Germany, which is much less connected and united than the history of German unification usually acknowledges.

Stemming from the early railway system in Brazil, this article builds on conviviality in Latin America. Scholarship traditionally looks at railroads to analyse economy, architecture, and labour. However, the extent to which railroads changed everyday interactions within the smallest contexts remains overlooked. To fill in this gap, it draws from novels, plays, and short stories written between the late-nineteenth century and the first three decades of the twentieth century. This timeframe corresponds to the “railway boom” in Brazil and encompasses renowned authors such as Machado de Assis but also glossed over authors, as Julia Lopes de Almeida. Literary sources such as these allow the analysis of the impact that trains had on the everyday that would, otherwise, remain unknown. Railway transport systems played a key role on the colonization process in West Africa. In Senegal, the main terrestrial communication axis (Dakar-Saint-Louis, Thiès-Kayes) built between 1882 and 1909 favoured the expansion of the market economy and the development of the cash-crop cultures. The railways and the modernization of oceanic port infrastructures at Dakar and Rufisque encouraged the growth of the external trade in Senegal. This article analyzes the consequences of an extroverted transport model in the long term.
