Seneca praises the behaviour of Q. Aelius Tubero, who offered a public banquet giving an example of radical frugality. In doing so, he reverses the negative judgement of Cicero and Valerius Maximus, who blamed Tubero, because in public occasions the Romans have to show magnificence and luxury. Seneca intentionally goes against common sense, representing Tubero as a Stoic hero, just like Cato of Utica.
