Hellenistic Delos

The name of the island appears on the signs of Linear B as “Su-ro”, that is Syros. Its name in the Odyssey as "Συρίη" corresponds to Syria and its king Ktesios and not to the island of Syros in the Cyclades. The confusion may be due to the energy of Ferekydes, who was originally from Gadara, Assyria. The name “Sura”, deriving from the language of the Phoenicians, is completely different from the Greek one and it only exists in Rhodes, in the area of the present village Archangelos, with the meaning of a rocky (stony) place. However, it was used in medieval maps from the 12th century to denote the island of Syros. Finally, the name “Suda”, from which derived surnames as well, is related only to people who arrived in Syros and Tinos from Souda in Chania, Crete, as Venetian citizens.

Για το θέμα αυτό έχω επιλέξει να αναφερθώ σε περιηγητικά κείμενα ενός φινλανδού κλασικού φιλολόγου, του Όσκαρ Έμιλ Τουντέερ (1850-1930), εμπνευσμένα από το ταξίδι του στην Ελλάδα και το Χισαρλίκ από το τέλος του 1881 μέχρι το καλοκαίρι του 1882.

Unlike the four Panhellenic festivals with their focus on what it meant to be Greek, regional and city celebrations and their competitions concentrated on more local concerns. At the Panathenaia at Athens, the Eretrian Artemisia at Amarynthos, and the Delia on Delos, how one participated in the competitions and other spectacles was crucial to the dynamics of the festival and the construction of its politics. In the case of the Panathenaia, the restrictions on participation kept the focus on Athenians and those closely associated with the city. The Artemisia concentrated on local issues, particularly in the years after 340 BCE on recovering from civil strife, while the Delia functioned at the level of the region. Both the Artemisia and the Delia show how the politics of a celebration may change over time. These local festivals existed in tension between the needs of the sponsoring community and its relationships to other cities and region(s).

The present study investigates questions of religious syncretism and household cult through an interdisciplinary study of terracotta figurines of Egyptian deities found at Delos, an important Hellenistic Greek port of trade. A comparison of the figurines’ iconography to parallels in Egyptian religious texts, temple reliefs, and ritual objects reveals that many of the figurines depict deities or rituals associated with the festival of the Inundation. Furthermore, an analysis of the figurines’ clay fabrics and manufacturing techniques suggests that the vast majority of the Egyptianizing terracottas on Delos were locally made, so the figurines’ allusions to Egyptian religion accurately reflect the theological knowledge of craftsmen on Delos. Finally, the use of unpublished excavation notes from the late 19th and early 20th centuries enables a reconstruction of the figurines’ previously-lost archaeological contexts, shedding light on their roles and significance in both domestic and temple cults.

This monograph investigates the spread of Egyptian religion into the Greek world through an interdisciplinary study of the iconography, archaeological contexts, clay fabric, and manufacturing techniques of terracotta figurines of Egyptian deities found at the important Hellenistic Greek trading port of Delos. Extant studies of Hellenistic terracotta figurines often take an art-historical approach, rather than considering the webs of social relations and practices surrounding these artifacts. However, when examined in their proper archaeological context, these figurines can shed light on many issues important to anthropologists as well as Classicists and Egyptologists. In particular, the presence of themes from so-called “official” religion in mass-produced, widely accessible objects such as terracotta figurines suggests a closer, more complex relationship between “popular” and “official” cults than is often acknowledged.

Le sanctuaire d’Apollon à Délos recèle un grand nombre de monuments votifs et honorifiques, in situ ou non et plus ou
moins bien conservés. Au cours de l’époque hellénistique, ils n’ont cessé de se multiplier jusqu’aux sacs de l’île de 88 et 69.
Pendant la période de l’Indépendance (314−167), ils ont surtout été érigés par des rois, des ligues et des cités, principalement
autour de l’épiphanestatos topos du sanctuaire. À l’époque de la Colonie Athénienne (167−69), ces offrandes monumentales,
de plus en plus souvent dédiées par des particuliers venus de l’ensemble du monde méditerranéen, ont colonisé tous les
espaces disponibles autour du parvis de l’Autel de Cornes et le long des principales voies de communication qui parcourent
le hiéron. Cette évolution topographique trouve des échos au niveau typologique qui permettent d’appréhender d’importants
changements sociologiques de la pratique de l’offrande monumentale entre la haute et la basse époque hellénistique.

This paper analyzes the factors that affected the urban development of the port city of Delos after 167 BCE, when the Romans put the island under Athenian dominion and turned it into a commercial base connecting the eastern and western Mediterranean. The result of this economic development was unprecedented demographic growth and, by consequence, accelerated urbanization. I argue that the growing commercial and manufacturing activities that were integrated into the urban fabric, and in particular in the domestic sphere, which developed alongside the operation of the entrepôt of Delos, affected the urban development of the port city. I adopt a bottom-up approach, examining the ways in which activities and developments in the micro-scale of the city shaped its macro-scale. Specifically, I focus on the Delian houses and analyze the gradual incorporation of economic activities in them. In doing so, my aim is to evaluate the ways in which uncontrolled factors, such as micro- and macro-scale economic and social developments, fit into our understanding of urbanism in antiquity – rather than analyze the urban planning of the city. Whereas this paper focuses on a specific case study of urban growth, its ultimate goal is to offer an alternative approach to the understanding of urbanism in classical antiquity.

Of the numerous terracotta figurines from Hellenistic Delos, a small minority depict Egyptian deities or other figures from Egyptian religious cult. This article presents selected conclusions derived from a broader research project examining (1) what commonalities exist among the possessors of Egyptian or Egyptianizing figurines, and (2) the social meanings and religious beliefs that people signified through the possession and use of such artifacts.

This paper focuses on one subgroup of these terracottas: ithyphallic figurines of Harpocrates from the Delian necropolis on Rheneia. Such images are often dismissed as “grotesque,” but a detailed examination of their iconography and archaeological context reveals a highly sophisticated understanding of Egyptian theology. The presence of themes from so-called “official” religion in mass-produced, widely accessible objects such as terracotta figurines suggests a closer, more complex relationship between “popular” and “official” cults than is often acknowledged.

In this book I explore the ancient history and modern historiography of relations between Egypt and Greece from the fifth century BCE to the early Roman empire. Beginning with Herodotus, I analyze key encounters between Greeks and Egyptian priests, the bearers of Egypt’s ancient traditions. A series of four moments emerge as rich micro-histories of cross-cultural interaction: Herodotus’ interviews with priests at Thebes, Manetho’s composition of an Egyptian history in Greek, the struggles of Egyptian priests on Delos, and a Greek physician’s quest for magic in Egypt. In writing these histories, I move beyond Orientalizing representations of the Other and colonial metanarratives of the civilizing process to reveal interactions between Greeks and Egyptians as transactional processes in which the traditions, discourses and pragmatic interests of both sides shaped the outcome. The result is a dialogical history of cultural and intellectual exchanges between the civilizations of Greece and Egypt.

Au sein des plus grands sanctuaires d’Apollon, une place est dévolue à Artémis : elle y reçoit un culte et possède souvent son propre temple. Le mythe de la naissance des jumeaux divins explique en partie cet appariement, mais ne suffit pas à rendre compte de la place et de la fonction réservées à la déesse dans ces lieux sacrés. Dans le tandem qu’elle forme avec son frère là où il règne en maître, quel est le rôle assumé par Artémis ? Cette question est au cœur du présent ouvrage, qui rassemble systématiquement les documents archéologiques et textuels disponibles sur les sites de Délos, de Delphes, de Claros et de Didymes. Leur confrontation critique éclaire la place et le rôle spécifique de la déesse d’un sanctuaire à l’autre. Près d’Apollon et souvent dans son ombre, Artémis semble avoir été un rouage essentiel dans l’articulation des pratiques locales avec les cultes panhelléniques. Attirant une clientèle très diverse par ses origines géographiques, son statut social et son genre, la déesse a été impliquée à différents titres et avec une intensité variable dans la vie des cités qui géraient ces sanctuaires. Sa position secondaire par rapport à son jumeau lui a conservé une plasticité qui a favorisé l’évolution de son culte au plan local.

Ce texte dresse le bilan des recherches menées depuis 2004 dans l’Aphrodision de Stèsileôs. L’étude des vestiges architecturaux du sanctuaire, celle des inventaires déliens et les résultats des fouilles menées depuis 2005 conduisent à proposer une nouvelle interprétation de la puissance attribuée à la divinité par ses fidèles, et de la variation au cours de l’époque hellénistique de la personnalité divine honorée dans le sanctuaire. Les implications sociales de la fondation et du culte sont prises en compte aussi bien que la dimension politique et locale du culte. Un aperçu de l’évolution du site entre sa première occupation à la fin du IVe siècle et son abandon définitif est proposé.

Our aim in this MA dissertation has been to examine the phenomenon of the repeated crowning in honorary decrees and honorary inscriptions. A praise and a crown are the most usual honours which the Greek cities gave to their benefactors from the Classical times onwards. A record of the text of the praise and the crowning is an inseperable part of all honorary decrees. A crowning included quite often a formal award of a golden crown to the honorand , or sometimes, of a crown made of another material, like, e.g., a crown of young branch. Most of the crownings are the case of an hapax crowning, that is the award of a crown only once for the specific benefaction to which the honours apply. Contrary to the hapax crowning, the annually repeated crowning of the same person for the same benefaction, or the same group of benefactions, appears in certain honorary decrees of the Classical, Hellenistic, and Imperial times. A repeated/perpetual crowning often included the repetition of the ceremony of the crown award. The repeated/perpetual crowning itself, and, more specifically, the type and the reasons of the repeated crowning reveal that it was considered as an exceptional honour, awarded in special conditions. The phenomenon of the repeated crowning has already been a subject of research and a kind of provisional survey has already been conducted. But it has not been examined as a whole, in terms of time and place, based on a full corpus of the relevant inscriptions. In the present dissertation, this particular phenomenon is studied more comprehensively and systematically, so that all the features of the repeated crowning are displayed. The dissertation’s structure was determined by the form, the phrasing and the content of the repeated crowning. Thus, it consists of three parts: A. Introduction, B. Main Subject (διηνεκὴς στέφανος [crown awarded repeatedly during one's lifetime]), C. Summary and Conclusions. The Main Subject is devided in the following parts: I) Repeated crowning, in which the phenomenon itself is examined. II) Repeated crowning and repeated award and III) Hapax crowning. Those passages of the inscriptions are cited in each chapter, that are informative of the repeated crowning. An analysis with explanatory notes of the content of the inscriptions follows the original Greek text, so as to exhibit how the repeated crowning fits into its context each time.

Περίληψη: Σκοπός της Διπλωματικής ήταν η εξέταση του φαινομένου της επαναλαμβανόμενης στεφάνωσης σε τιμητικά ψηφίσματα και τιμητικές επιγραφές. Ο έπαινος και ο στέφανος είναι οι συνηθέστερες τιμές τις οποίες απένεμαν οι ελληνικές πόλεις σε ευεργέτες τους ήδη από την Κλασική εποχή και εξής. Η διατύπωση του επαίνου και της στεφάνωσης είναι αναπόσπαστο μέρος του τυπικού όλων των τιμητικών ψηφισμάτων. Η στεφάνωση συνίστατο στην απονομή στο τιμώμενο πρόσωπο πολύ συχνά ενός χρυσού στεφάνου καθορισμένης αξίας, ή ενίοτε ενός στεφάνου από άλλη ύλη, όπως π. χ. ενός στεφάνου «θαλλοῦ». Στην συντριπτική πλειοψηφία των περιπτώσεων απονομής στεφάνου πρόκειται για άπαξ στεφάνωση, δηλαδή απονομή ενός στεφάνου μία μόνον φορά για την συγκεκριμένη ευεργεσία στην οποία αναφέρονται οι τιμές. Σε αντιδιαστολή με την στεφάνωση άπαξ εμφανίζεται σε ορισμένα τιμητικά ψηφίσματα της Κλασικής, της Ελληνιστικής και της Αυτοκρατορικής εποχής η κατ’έτος επαναλαμβανόμενη στεφάνωση του ιδίου προσώπου για την ίδια ευεργεσία ή για το ίδιο σύνολο ευεργεσιών. Συχνά η επαναλαμβανόμενη στεφάνωση συνίστατο στην επαναλαμβανόμενη αναγόρευση του απονεμηθέντος στεφάνου. Η επαναλαμβανόμενη στεφάνωση καθαυτή και ειδικότερα το είδος και οι λόγοι της επαναλαμβανόμενης στεφάνωσης δείχνουν ότι επρόκειτο για εξαιρετική τιμή η οποία απονεμόταν υπό ειδικές συνθήκες. Το φαινόμενο της επαναλαμβανόμενης στεφάνωσης έχει τεθεί ήδη στην έρευνα και έχει γίνει κάποιου είδους προκαταρκτική εξέταση. Αλλά το φαινόμενο αυτό δεν έχει εξετασθεί ακόμα συνολικά στον χρόνο και στον χώρο με βάση όλες τις σχετικές επιγραφές. Στην παρούσα εργασία εξετάζεται το φαινόμενο της επαναλαμβανόμενης στεφάνωσης περισσότερο αναλυτικά και συστηματικά, έτσι ώστε αναδεικνύονται όλα τα χαρακτηριστικά γνωρίσματα της επαναλαμβανόμενης στεφάνωσης. Η διάρθρωση της εργασίας υπαγορεύθηκε από το είδος, την διατύπωση και το περιεχόμενο της επαναλαμβανόμενης στεφάνωσης. Έτσι η εργασία διαρθρώνεται σε τρία μέρη: (Α) την Εισαγωγή, (Β) το κυρίως θέμα (Διηνεκής στέφανος: είδος, διατύπωση, περιεχόμενο) και (Γ) την Ανακεφαλαίωση και τα συμπεράσματα. Το κύριο μέρος της εργασίας (Β) διαρθρώνεται στις εξής επιμέρους θεματικές ενότητες: I) Επαναλαμβανόμενη στεφάνωση, όπου εξετάζεται καθαυτό το φαινόμενο της επαναλαμβανόμενης στεφάνωσης, II) Επαναλαμβανόμενη στεφάνωση και επαναλαμβανόμενη αναγόρευση, όπου εξετάζεται το φαινόμενο της επαναλαμβανόμενης στεφάνωσης και συνοδεύεται από την επαναλαμβανόμενη αναγόρευση του απονεμηθέντος στεφάνου και III) Άπαξ στεφάνωση και επαναλαμβανόμενη αναγόρευση, όπου εξετάζεται το φαινόμενο της άπαξ στεφάνωσης και της επαναλαμβανόμενης αναγόρευσης του στεφάνου. Σε κάθε κεφάλαιο δίνονται τα χωρία εκείνα των επιγραφών, τα οποία παρέχουν πληροφορίες για την επαναλαμβανόμενη στεφάνωση. Μετά τα αρχαία ελληνικά χωρία ακολουθεί σχολιασμένη η απόδοση του περιεχομένου των επιγραφών, για να δειχθεί η ένταξη της επαναλαμβανόμενης στεφάνωσης στα εκάστοτε συμφραζόμενά της.

This paper discusses the theoretical problem of the mediation between macro and micro scales of analysis in Global History, centered on the analysis of the temple of Mithridates dedicated by a certain Helianax in 102/1 BC in the Samothrakeion of Delos. After describing the available archaeological and epigraphical evidence, the paper discusses the concepts of (urban) insularity, world/global city, and integration fields, in order to explore their explanatory power for the analysis of the integration fields and modes of integration visible in Helianax's dedication.

Course Description: This course offers an introduction to the history of ancient Greece from the Bronze Age to the end of the Hellenistic Age (roughly the 16 th to the 1 st centuries BCE), drawing on both source materials and modern works. This is a student-driven seminar based on readings, presentations, and in-class discussions on the societal, religious, and political developments of the Greek world in antiquity. Students will become familiar with the Bronze, Archaic, Classical, Hellenistic, and early Roman periods of Greek history. The foundation of this course is the geopolitical history of the expanding Greek world; however, students also will engage the importance of ancient Greek culture, literature, religion, art, and gender roles. Through the investigation of texts, architecture, and archaeology, students will gain an appreciation of not just the ruling classes of the ancient Greek world, but also of the daily lives of normal Greeks and Hellenized native peoples. This will be a reading seminar course driven primarily by student participation. It will focus mostly on modern studies but also will feature a wide array of literary and archaeological source materials. Students will investigate historiographical arguments, lead class discussions, and prepare presentations.
