Το Σεπτέμβριο του 1991, ιδρύθηκε στο Ηράκλειο η Περιφερειακή Υπηρεσία των Γενικών Αρχείων του Κράτους, με την ονομασία Γ.Α.Κ.-Αρχεία Νομού Ηρα-κλείου, η οποία αποτελεί αυτοτελή δη-μόσια υπηρεσία, υπαγόμενη απευθείας στον Υπουργό Παιδείας και Θρησκευ-μάτων, Πολιτισμού και Αθλητισμού. Σκοπός και κύρια μέριμνα των Αρ-χείων Ηρακλείου είναι η διάσωση, η επο-πτεία, η συγκέντρωση, η ταξινόμηση και ευρετηρίαση όλων των δημόσιων και ιδιωτικών αρχείων, τα οποία αναφέρον-ται στην ιστορία και στην πολιτιστική κληρονομιά του Νομού. Μέχρι σήμερα έχουν εισαχθεί στα Γ.A.K. Ν. Ηρακλείου 324 αρχειακά σύ-νολα, από τα οποία 81 συμβολαιογρα-φικά, 8 αρχεία υποθηκοφυλακείων, 182 εκπαιδευτικά, 30 διοικητικά, 14 δικα-στικά, 3 δημοτικά και 6 ιδιωτικά. Τα αρ-χεία αυτά είναι στη διάθεση των πολιτών, στις συναλλαγές τους με τη δημόσια δι-οίκηση, αλλά και των επιστημόνων-ερευ-νητών που ασχολούνται με την Κρητική Ιστορία. Επίσης, τα Γ.Α.Κ. Ηρακλείου σε συ-νεργασία με τις Διευθύνσεις Εκπαίδευ-σης και τις σχολικές μονάδες, διοργανώ-νουν εκπαιδευτικά προγράμματα, για τους μαθητές της Πρωτοβάθμιας και Δευ-τεροβάθμιας Εκπαίδευσης και συμμετέ-χουν σε τοπικά και διεθνή συνέδρια για την ανάδειξη και προβολή της ιστορίας του τόπου μας.

In the last part of 19th century, Drachmani, renamed to Elateia, had just acquired a newly designed town plan and tried to be transformed from a village of the Ottoman period in a modern town. It had to resolve basic problems of the community (National Land issue), to organize its structures, despite the lack of public buildings, and at the same time to protect its heritage from looting and plundering. At the same period, the
engineer Hector Abel Gotteland who had undertaken the delineation of the railway line from Athens to Thessaly visited the sanctuary of Athena Kranaia and shared his impressions with his friend Pierre Paris,
a young promising member of the French School at Athens, who asked the permission of the Ministry to investigate the sanctuary. The excavation started under bad weather conditions in November 1883 and was
supervised on behalf of the Greek Archaeological Service initially by Panagiotis Stamatakis and later by Epameinondas Koromantzos. Their reports offer plenty of evidence about the excavations in the sanctuary
and later in the city, as well as about the fate of the finds, finally identified almost a century later at the National Museum and at Chaeronea museum. Equally valuable is the information about Drachmani in 19th
century and its inhabitants.

For a long time, historians have considered archives and libraries to be relatively unimportant in the ancient Greek society, despite their admiration for the administrative organisation of Greek and Roman states and the cultural impact of Hellenistic libraries. Ancient sources are fragmentary and focus on the cultural and political dimensions of some of these institutions, such as the Great Library of Alexandria and the archive of the Athenian Metroon, while neglecting their material features. Renewed interest for these institutions and the improvement of excavation techniques and text analysis have however resulted in numerous discoveries in the last decades, and in the development of our knowledge of ancient archives and libraries. This study offers readers — classicists, historians of the book, archivists and librarians — a renewed synthesis of libraries and archives in the Greek world. As a result of recent historical, archaeological and epigraphic developments, it is now possible to discuss the architectural, topographical and material characteristics of these institutions in the Hellenised world, from Italy to Afghanistan, from the end of the Archaic period to the Flavian era.
