Functioning

The paper attempts to provide an updated and holistic description of the research ethics system in Latvia and discuses the problems in its structure and functioning. It is based on the data gathered in an empirical study of RECs in Central and Eastern Europe in 2008 and it is structured according to the integrated framework proposed by Hyder et al. First a short outline of the historical development of the ethics review system in the 1990s is given, then the issues of general social, political and economic background and the resultant enabling conditions, as well as the national and regional strategy of ethical review are reviewed. Next, the discussion turns to institutional commitment, the factors influencing the quality of review, and ethically relevant aspects of investigators’ behavior. The main conclusion is that current developmental conditions are not too favorable for research ethics review; despite the overall progress, several crucial enabling conditions are not in place yet.

A new aspect of ecosystem service is identified and shown in this paper.

The article presents a new vision of how biodiversity helps towards better stability and water quality. The author made an innovative analysis of his experimental data and formulated the following fundamental principle: to maintain water quality, it is vital to protect the functionally active biodiversity of water ecosystems. In other words, according to his vision, the protection of functionally active biodiversity, including filter-feeders, is a key to maintenance of water quality.

Among the new facts that were established in the author's experiments that were reported in this paper: the detergent IXI 20 mg/L inhibited water filtration by marine mussels Mytilus galloprovincialis; the detergent Deni-Automat 30 mg/L also inhibited the water filtration by oysters Crassostrea gigas Thunberg .

Abstract
On the basis of the previous publications, our new data and the existing scientific literature, we have
formulated some fundamental principles that characterize the pivotal roles of the biodiversity of filterfeeders
in ecosystems. Among those roles are: (1) the role of ecological repair of water quality, (2) the
role of contributing to reliability and stability of the functioning of the ecosystem, (3) the role of
contributing to creation of habitat heterogeneity, (4) the role of contributing to acceleration of migration
of chemical elements. It is an important feature of the biomachinery of filter-feeders that it removes from
water various particles of a very broad range of sizes. Another important principle is that the amount of
the organic matter filtered out of water is larger than the amount assimilated so that a significant part of
the removed material serves no useful function to the organism of the filter-feeder, but serves a beneficial
function to some other species and to the ecosystem as a whole. The new experiments by the author
additionally demonstrated a vulnerability of the filtration activity of filter feeders (e.g. bivalves and
rotifers) to some xenobiotics (tetradecyltrymethylammonium bromide, heavy metals and some others).

The author identified a new type of ecological hazard of anthropogenic impact (using chemical pollution as an example), which he proposed to term “synecological summation” or “synergistic summation” of anthropogenic effects on organisms of two adjacent trophic levels. In the paper, the hazard was found that even relatively mild influences on organisms of two adjacent trophic levels may eventually produce a synergistic, pronounced and definitely undesirable effect that will lead to an abnormal increase in the abundance of organisms of one of the trophic levels. The concrete examples of synergism were found when anthropogenic impacts affected organisms of two adjacent trophic levels (bivalves and alage). Bioeffects were described of the action of synthetic detergent Vesna (1 mg/l) on oysters Crassostrea gigas, detergent  IXI (10 mg/l) on  mussels Mytilus galloprovincialis, detergent Tide-Lemon  (50 mg/l) on M. galloprovincialis. The danger of simultaneous influence of contamination of environment (e.g., by detergents) on organisms of the two trophic levels may occur when the polluting chemicals produce effects  on algae and bivalves that are filter-feeders. ABSTRACT: Studies of ecology of living organisms lead to a more profound understanding of the intricate processes of the Earth’s biosphere functioning. The mankind is still far from establishing harmonious relations with it. However, permanently progressing destruction of natural complexes by the technogenic civilization necessitates some new revolutionary approaches to their preservation. That is why it is so important to study the relationships and interactions between living organisms. Objective: This study is an attempt to investigate validity and reliability of the Persian version of Sexual Self-Efficacy Scale-Female functioning in volunteer married women in married dormitories and non-dormitories of Shahid Beheshti University of Tehran, Iran. Methods: The current study is descriptive of type survey. The sample consisted of 160 volunteer married women in married dormitories and non-dormitories of Shahid Beheshti University of Tehran, who were selected by a convenience sampling method and a structured clinical interview based on DSM-IV-TR after voluntary obtaining informed consent. They completed 37-item Sexual Self-Efficacy Scale-Female Functioning (SSES-F). The data were analyzed using exploratory factor analysis by SPSS-PC (v.16). Results: The results of exploratory factor analysis on SSES-F identified 4 factors. Cronbach´s α coefficients was α=0.93 for the entire measure (28 items), with alphas ranging from 0.80 to 0.92 for the individual factors. Conclusion: Given the validity and reliability of the SSES-F Scale, with regard to the validity and reliability of the SSES-F, this scale can be used in clinical settings and research studies, particularly in prevention and increasing the competence of legal marital relations.

OBJECTIVE To cross-culturally validate and examine the inter-rater reliability of the Personal and Social Performance scale (PSP), Thai version (Thai-PSP). MATERIAL AND METHOD The authors translated, back translated, and conducted a panel review on the source, translated, and back translated version of the PSP. After nine psychiatrists, who were new to the PSP or the Thai-PSP had received a three-hour session of training, they jointly watched four tape-recorded interviews and used the Thai-PSP for independent rating of the patients' functioning. RESULTS The score ranges for items 1 (socially useful activities), 2 (personal/social relationships), and 3 (self-care) were between 0 (absent) and 4 (severe). Sport is an expression tool of the culture. Historical memory of sport, with its scientific and artistic side, serves as a bridge for societies to reach large masses. In this respect, cultural and sportive movements have led to the establishment of sports museums around the world. Sports museums are a form of expression and a story of a nation. They are the most meaningful bridges between past and future generations. With these aspects, the Nice National Sports Museum of France is one of the representatives in modern countries of sports museology emerged at the end of 19 century. The purpose of the research is to examine the structure, functioning and problems of the Nice National Sports Museum of France, one of the museums in modern countries. In the research, the result has been achieved through the assessment of data, which has been collected by using literature review model and qualitative research techniques within a system. In line with these objectives, the structure of museum, its sections, architecture, comprehensibility, exhibition and richness of cultural and social activities have been presented. The research is important in terms of being as an example of the work to be done on sports museology. As result of the study, Nice National Sports Museum of France has provided different points of view to the sport museology improvement and development, in terms of its structure and functioning, and, with regard to reflecting positive and negative sides of a museum, has become an example for the sport museums to be established with its knowledge, experience and implementations.

BACKGROUND:
Few studies have examined the trajectories of symptom severity in first episode psychosis (FEP) and their impact on functioning. This study aimed to identify discrete trajectories of positive, negative and general psychopathological symptoms and functioning, determine predictors of the identified symptom trajectories and subsequently investigate the relationship between symptom and functioning trajectories over the 2-year follow-up period.

METHODS:
Data were extracted from the Singapore Early Psychosis Intervention Programme clinical database. Trajectories of the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale and Global Assessment of Functioning (GAF) scale over the two-year follow up were modelled using latent class growth curve modelling.

RESULTS:
Two distinct trajectories (early response and stable trajectory and delayed response trajectory) for positive symptoms, four distinct trajectories (early response and stable trajectory, early response and relapse trajectory, slower response and no response trajectory and delayed response trajectory) for negative and general psychopathology symptoms and three distinct trajectories for functioning (high functioning trajectory, moderately stable functioning trajectory and deterioration in functioning trajectory) were identified in our sample. Compared to individuals in the early response and stable trajectory, those in the delayed response trajectory for positive and negative symptoms, early response and relapse for negative and general psychopathology symptoms and slower response and no response trajectories for general psychopathology symptoms were significantly associated with higher odds of having deterioration in functioning over time. Poor symptom trajectories were also significantly predicted by younger age, male gender, unemployed and economically inactive status, lower education, longer duration of untreated psychosis and diagnosis of schizophrenia spectrum and delusional disorders.

CONCLUSIONS:
The results confirm that the symptoms trajectories among patients with FEP are heterogeneous and suggest that a small group of patients may be at higher risk of deterioration in symptom severity and functioning over the 2-year follow-up.

"The sintering behavior of synthesized nanocrystalline hydroxyapatite (HA) powder was investigated in terms of phase stability and mechanical properties. A wet chemical precipitation method was successfully employed to synthesize a high purity and single phase HA powder. After shaping, HA powder compacts have been sintered over the temperature range of 1000 degrees C to 1300 degrees C. Two different sintering holding times of 1 minute and 120 minutes were investigated. The results revealed that the 1 minute holding time profile was effective in suppressing grain growth and producing a HA body with improved densification. Additionally, higher mechanical properties such as Young's modulus of 119 GPa, high fracture toughness of 1.41 MPa.m(1/2) and hardness of 9.5 GPa were obtained for this sample as compared to HA bodies when sintered using the 120 minutes holding time. The study revealed for the first time that HA could be sintered using a 1 minute holding time without compromising on HA phase stability and mechanical properties.

OBJECTIVE To evaluate the relationship between affectivity and sociodemographic and clinical characteristics, quality of life, functioning, and social support satisfaction in schizophrenia. METHOD Cross-sectional study of a sample of 282 schizophrenic patients. An interview was performed using a sociodemographic and clinical questionnaire and scales to evaluate positive and negative affect, quality of life, social support satisfaction, and functioning. RESULTS Participants' employment status, gender, whether they smoked, hospitalization in the last year, antidepressant medication and benzodiazepines, quality of life, functioning, and satisfaction with social support had relationships with positive or negative affect. CONCLUSION This study provides further understanding of the factors related to affectivity in schizophrenia. More studies are needed to prove these relations and their effects on rehabilitation in people with schizophrenia.

Background: Bright light therapy has been shown to improve depressive symptoms in patients with nonseasonal major depressive disorder (MDD) but there are few studies examining functional outcomes.
Methods: We examined secondary functional outcomes in the 8-week randomized, placebo-sham-controlled LIFE-D trial comparing light therapy, fluoxetine, and the combination in patients with nonseasonal MDD. Functional assessments included the Sheehan Disability Scale (SDS) and, for employed participants, the Lam Employment Absence and Productivity Scale (LEAPS). Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) was conducted with SDS and LEAPS change scores from baseline to week 8 as dependent variables, treatment modality (light, fluoxetine) as an independent variable, and baseline SDS and LEAPS scores as covariates.
Results: Of 122 randomized participants, SDS data were available for 105 and LEAPS data for 70. For the SDS, there were no interaction effects, but there was a significant small- to medium-sized main effect of light treatment on total SDS scores with corresponding significant effects in the Social Life and Family Life domains, but not in the Work/Study domain. There were no significant interaction or main effects with LEAPS scores.
Conclusion: Light therapy significantly improved social and family life functioning in patients with MDD. However, work functioning was not significantly improved despite large effect sizes; these results were limited by low statistical power because of small sample sizes. Future studies should use longer treatment durations and be powered to detect clinically relevant differences in functional outcomes.
