Environmental Efficiency

Assessment energy and environmental issues got a special focus due to global warming and climate vulnerabilities. Energy,environment, and economic development yielded a combined effect simultaneously, which is favorable for the economic point of view while unfavorable for environmental aspects. It is necessary to measure the energy, economic an environmental performance with appropriate methods. Therefore this study undertakes to assess energy security and measure environmental efficiency. Data used in this study was collected from official website of International Energy Agency (IEA), British Petroleum (BP) and World Bank. We employed a non-radial DEA technologyforassessing energy and environmental efficiency for OECD countries. Results reveal that the values of energy consumption range from 0.93 to 0.30 while GHG emission per capita values range from 24.61 to 5.28. As for energy efficiency is concerned the Iceland and Greece have the highest values 0.99 of energy efficiency whereas Ireland has the lowest value 0.34 of energy efficiency.Further analysis shows that the countries of Austria, Australia, Portugal, and Spain have the values between 0.70 and 0.80 for energy intensity whereas UK, Sweden, Germany, and the USA, have the values of energy intensity between 0.40 and 0.50. The study proposes some valuable policy implications for policy and decision-makers to make the environment more sustainable.

This technical report proposes a set of good practices to improve the energy efficiency of cyber-physical applications – making use of IoT, AI, and Digital Twins. First, the report introduces the cyber-physical paradigm, engineering reference framework, and a couple of system deployments models. Secondly, it defines three end-to-end use case typologies to be addressed (i.e. monitoring application using smart IoT systems and AI software; smart application using Edge computing and Cloud data center; and simulation applications using Digital Twin pattern). Energy efficiency practices are discussed adopting a circular value-chain model that consists of three main steps: Data Storage; Data Transfer/Move; and Data Processing/Analytics. Finally, this report offers a set of recommended practices relating to each component of the three end-to-end use case typologies.

Background: Today, increasing the world’s population and efforts of countries to
achieve economic growth, this research, aims to study the variables affecting economic
and environmental efficiency.
Methods: In the first part of the envelopment analysis of network data the economic
efficiency of European Union (EU) countries was calculated according to the input
variables. In the second part, the environmental efficiency of EU countries was
evaluated based on the two important outputs of greenhouse gas emissions and the
absorption of polluting gases. Finally, countries were ranked accordingly.
Results: Correlation analysis showed that almost all input and output variables are
positively correlated and thus meet the isotonic need. Likewise, all of them can be
selected for evaluation using the DEA technique. Also the results indicated that 5
countries, including Denmark, France, Germany, the Netherlands, and the United
Kingdom were efficient in the first stage. Besides, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Ireland,
Latvia, and Luxembourg were in the second step.
Conclusion: The results of this study showed that none of the countries was recognized
as total efficiency. Thus, none of the countries were able to operate simultaneously in
both the economic efficiency and the environmental efficiency phase.
