Despite the influence of changing demographics in Japan, the National Center Test for University Entrance Exams continues to assert an ever increasing role in the process of university admissions. In preparation for this examination, the majority of senior high school students learn from textbooks approved by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology (MEXT). This study compares Section Six of the 2003-7 and 2008-9 National Center Test English reading examination with three widely used MEXT senior high school reading textbooks. By triangulating analyses of vocabulary, reading ease/grade level indices, reading skills, and comprehension item formats, thereby expanding the methodologies of previous research in this area, the study poses the question: To what degree do the text and comprehension tasks of MEXT textbooks compare with those which students will be expected to comprehend in the National Center Test reading examination? Updating the results of earlier studies, the descriptive and inferential statistics reveal that while the vocabulary levels of the textbook now appear to correspond more closely with recent versions of the examination, further alignment of readability, grade levels, and comprehension tasks is necessary if MEXT textbooks are to support the development of reading proficiency now required.

The M.A. Entrance Examination of TEFL held at Islamic Azad University (IAU)
has never been scrutinized in terms of its reliability. To this path, the study
reported to estimate the reliability of the General English Section of this test
administered to the M.A. candidates sitting in 2011 exam of IAU. In so doing, 30 male and female student of B.A program of English translation at IAU (Khorasgan Branch) participated in this study voluntarily. In collecting the data to investigate the reliability of the exam, Consent Form of Participation, Testing
Questionnaire, and General English Questions of Entrance Examination of TEFL of IAU were used. The method of investigating reliability was based on split-half. To report the reliability results, the papers were corrected based on negative score formula. Later, the reliability was established by  pearman-Brown prophecy formula. In interpreting reliability, IF and choice distribution were also used. The results showed that in spite of the existence of the high reliability in the whole test, R in this test is under question.

This article describes a recent education reform initiative concerning English education in Japan, specifically the proposed introduction of four-skills tests as part of the university entrance admissions process. The first aim is to summarize, in English, some of the key issues and events concerning the reform. To this end, background information and a timeline of key events since 2016 is provided. The second aim is to contrast proposals made by two academic organizations, the Japan Language Testing Association (JLTA) and the Science Council of Japan: Language and Literature Committee (SCJ). It is shown that, while agreeing on a number of specific issues related to the reform, these two organizations take starkly different positions in terms of their general orientation, which, it is argued, reflects the background of the organizational members and their views on foreign language education in Japan. These contrasting positions are discussed with reference to the metaphor, to throw the baby out with the bathwater. Finally, it is argued that a number of criticisms levelled at the proposed use of private four-skills tests illustrate a reluctance to engage with issues related to the currently used university entrance exams; in other words, these criticisms are made while ignoring the elephant in the room.

El propósito de este trabajo es observar con enfoque bourdiano1 los mecanismos de inclusión y exclusión implícitos en los dispositivos supuestamente igualitarios y abiertos que regulan la selección y el ingreso a las escuelas públicas de elite del sistema educativo argentino.
Nuestro interés es señalar un clivaje entre el carácter enunciado —supuestamente gratuito, igualitario y meritocrático— que se atribuye al curso de ingreso de estas escuelas, y los mecanismos de exclusión implícitos que operan de manera embozada como un filtro destinado a preservar la naturaleza elitista y diferenciante de la institución.
Pensamos que la sociología crítica de Bourdieu —en la medida en que se erige como una referencia ineludible para el estudio de las elites sociales (Heredia 2011:279)—, puede ser una herramienta conveniente para pensar la estructura compleja de las escuelas públicas meritocráticas y visibilizar algunos procesos de legitimación encubiertos, a partir de conceptos como los de habitus, violencia simbólica, autoridad pedagógica y arbitrariedad cultural. A la vez formulamos algunas preguntas sobre los límites de ciertas proposiciones bourdianas ante escenarios de cambio como los que podrían estar afectando al sistema educativo argentino en el momento actual.

We have developed new software named GaMeTix for management of large collections of examination questions written in a variety of MCQ (Multiple Choice Question) formats. This application provides a wide scale of functionality modes like collecting and editing sets of questions, generating electronic versions of examination tests, printing examination paper sheets and exporting sets of questions in a plain text document for hard copy archiving or transfer to specific electronic testing applications. The content of the database is searchable according to several criteria using sets of filters that characterize each question. Collections of MC questions can be divided or merged together according to results of the filtering function. Examination questions can be complemented with pictures or diagrams in .jpg format. GaMeTix is a portable, freeware application that runs on MS Windows operating systems.

The rankings of all kinds are in vogue. They are supported in the belief
that human activity is likely to be measured, each individual and every
institution must advance continuously to improve its position in the
ranking. Education and research are some of the activities most affected

Assurance ... Internationally: The Shanghai rankings of universities
type, those of "Impact" of scientific journals, Test of English as a
Foreign Language (TOEFL), The Graduate Record Examination (GRE), Pisa
Testing, etc. They assume that the intellect can be "measured,"
standardized, branded with basis with a unique number that is obtained
by "Summing Pears and Apples." Then the number is used to classify "by
descending order of quality" whole institutions, academic programs,
research groups and individuals. In this text we discuss the technical
impossibility of such pretension, emphasizing the development of a
ranking to choose people who deserve to enter the University of
Antioquia and discard those who do not deserve it. Seeks to answer the
following questions: (1) The system allows an accurate ranking of the
candidates, based on the scores? (2) Does the system is accomplished by
establishing a solid border between the scores of the admitted and the
unsupported? (3) Do the alleged measurements of the intellectual
abilities are the only measurements that escape protocols of the science
of measurements?

Увод. Професионалният и житейски път на значителна част от младите хора зависи от оценката им от приемните изпити в съответните средни и висши училища. Освен от знанията на оценяваните, оценките зависят и от оценителските качества на проверяващите конкурсните работи. При холистично оценяване на кандидатстудентските работи експертът-оценител поставя оценка, натоварена със собствената му грешка.
Цел. Въз основа на анализ на работата на множество оценителски комисии е предложен метод за оценка на индивидуалните оценителски качества на експертите от комисия, въз основа на който би могло да се прави ограничена селекция, минимизираща оценителската грешка на комисията като цяло.
Материал и метод. Беше анализирана работата на 19 оценителски комисии по математика, биология и български език, оценяващи писмените работи на кандидатите за специализирани средни училища и за университета.
Резултат. Разгледан е регламентът на оценяването от статистически аспект. Предложени са характеристики на индивидуалната грешка на член от комисията и на комисията като цяло. Предложен е метод за селекция на комисията по резултатите от оценяването на всеки от членовете. Разгледан е и метод за оценяване чрез тестове с множествен отговор (тип multiple choice) като са изследвани метрологичните специфики на този вид оценителски инструмент и е предложена оценителска схема чрез тестове от споменатия тип, базирана на теорията на информацията, теорията на вероятностите и математическата статистика.
