Le strutture portanti in legno delle coperture delle fabbriche tradizionali rappresentano una preziosa testimonianza di attente ed empiriche " scelte ingegneristiche " delle antiche maestranze locali, capaci di trovare raffinate soluzioni tecnologiche perfezionate nel corso dei secoli. Le apparecchiature tecnico-costruttive dell'areale etneo non fanno eccezione. Se ciò ha prodotto procedimenti " standardizzati " e ricorrenti per le architetture ad aula, come i sistemi a capriate o i più semplici e meno efficaci falsi puntoni su setti murari, le emergenze architettoniche a pianta centrale sono caratterizzate spesso da strutture lignee più complesse che, seppur celate dalle volte sottostanti, meritano la stessa attenzione. Il recupero di questi singolari esemplari risulta dunque fondamentale ma si deve confrontare necessariamente con le problematiche legate alla sicurezza nei territori soggetti a rischio sismico. In questo paper, dopo un'analisi di tali presenze nell'areale etneo, si esamina un caso emblematico che ben rappresenta l'uso dei materiali disponibili nel circondario e le tecniche realizzative messe a punto dalle maestranze locali: la copertura lignea della settecentesca chiesa di Santa Chiara a Catania. Si sottolineano infine gli aspetti principali che hanno contraddistinto l'intervento di recupero.

This study proposes a meta-approach to the problem of compatible reuse, applied in Catania to the brotherhoods single hall churches, often underused or disused. After making a cataloguing and expeditious anamnesis, we have analysed a framework of needs that would consider the settlement needs in the urban context. Having inserted the data collection in the system, we performed an assessment of compatibility of reuse that satisfies the historic building protection, the reversibility of possible action, and the requirements of the new undertaken functions.

The paper presents the PhD thesis, at the first year of its development, about the study of technical-constructive characteristics of historic bell towers, with the aim to support the empirical structural analysis for the seismic vulnerability assessment of such highly valuable buildings. After a preliminary study of recurring damage mechanisms, the research aims to analyse building techniques and lability due to geometric configurations, construction stages, wrong restorations or degradations that affect the functional-static behaviour of masonry. The thesis proposes a census and a typological classification of the historic bell towers in the Etna area. The next stage will also be a detailed study of emblematic cases, compared with the same building typology in Castilla y León, in order to verify whether the method of lability investigation could be considered as valid and common. The paper outlines the empirical method principles, the main recurring damage mechanisms in bell towers and the existing literature about the study of these slender structures. Finally, this article presents the first results of the census in the Etna area and introduces an original case study that eases some considerations about building techniques and damage mechanisms.

Le torri campanarie storiche costituiscono un patrimonio che identifica fortemente i centri storici europei. Alla loro istanza storica e culturale si contrappone però una grande vulnerabilità sismica. Sulla scorta delle esperienze dei terremoti degli ultimi anni, il metodo empirico per le analisi strutturali permette di individuare qualitativamente lo stato di salute di queste emergenze architettoniche. Il progetto di ricerca vuole fornire uno strumento di supporto alle analisi empirico-sperimentali (avvalendosi anche dell'ausilio di strumentazioni quali laser scanner o termocamere), indagando le labilità insite nelle configurazioni geometriche, nelle tecniche costruttive o nelle manifestazioni visibili di degrado che possono incidere sul comportamento strutturale. Tale studio sarà applicato su casi emblematici dell'areale Etneo, dopo aver eseguito un censimento ed una specifica classificazione tipologica mai compiuti precedentemente. Allo scopo di validare i risultati ottenuti, la ricerca verificherà se, dinnanzi a tecniche costruttive e contesti geografici differenti, edifici tipologicamente analoghi siano connotati da una diversa durabilità rispetto a quella riscontrata nel territorio nostrano, operando un confronto con le torri campanarie presenti nell'areale vallisoletano.
