Doors

This paper considers the opportunities for effective humanitarian collaboration in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK). It brings together perspectives from three individuals with extensive lived experience working in the DPRK. Collectively, these authors have worked in various sectors of international humanitarian aid and other areas of engagement such as emergency response and preparedness, education, social enterprise and tourism. The paper draws from these experiences to present lessons on overcoming obstacles and harnessing opportunities in the DPRK.

There are always two sides to a door. It has two faces without being two-faced. It is derived by merging two Old English forms: the singular "dor" and the plural “duru."

To be a door is to embrace multiplicities.

To be a door is to make choices all your life. More accurately to be a door is to perpetually unmake the choice that you last made; to choose between being opened, or being closed.

To be a door is to choose without taking sides.

The article describes the results of research done, for the first time, on the doors of two churches in the town of Ruźany (Ruzhany) situated  in the Brest region of Belarus. Those are wooden and metal artefacts manufactured during the second half of the 18th century, as well as a unique example of a door assemblies from 1669 the surface of which is decorated with a carved religious text and symbols.

Doors and windows are very manipulated manufacts. They are changed both by technical and other facts. But not the whole manufact is changed, more often some small parts are changed, or something is put on it, so that we can see many steps of history on itself. This paper analizes how doors and windows have changed and what kind of maintenance has been made on them.

I serramenti sono tra i manufatti più soggetti a trasformazione e manutenzione, per i cambiamenti tecnici, più rapidi di quelli che interessano le strutture o altre finiture, e per le evoluzioni del gusto. Tuttavia questi passaggi non sempre segnano il radicale cambiamento del serramento, piuttosto si tratta di accumularsi di strati di preparazioni, tinte, vernici, di aggiunta o sottrazione di partiture decorative, di sostituzione o trasformazione della ferramenta, fino a interventi sulla forma e dimensione dell'infisso. La cultura della tutela che su elementi costruttivi ritenuti più "importanti" riesce ad ottenere più rispetto per quanto i manufatti raccontano di sé stessi, sui serramenti non è ancora altrettanto efficace, mentre il mantenimento di questi manufatti in opera presenta, alla loro scala, gli stessi difficili problemi metodologici di ogni intervento di conservazione. Guardando più da vicino questi manufatti e penetrando qualche aspetto della loro storia ci si rende conto da un lato dell'interesse documentario che recano in sé e dall'altro degli aspetti tecnici (e non solo!) di cui occorre tenere conto nel pensare la loro manutenzione. L'insieme degli infissi di un edificio storico, nella sua diversificazione stratificata, esprime della storia più di quanto non riescano a fare altre parti della costruzione. Una loro sostituzione, come banalmente richiesto da normative o da semplici usi di cantiere, può causare al manufatto un'irrimediabile perdita di identità, soprattutto se si tratta di un edificio "qualunque". Per poter parlare degli interventi manutentivi svolti nel passato o da svolgersi nel futuro sui serramenti occorre prima di tutto chiedersi come riconoscerli, e quindi come si presentavano questi manufatti attraverso le epoche. The importance of the door for human civilization cannot be overstated. In various cultures, the door has been a central technology for negotiating the distinction between inside and outside, private and public, and profane and sacred. By tracing the material and symbolic significance of the door in American Fourth Amendment case law, this article illuminates the vitality of matter for law’s everyday practices. In particular, it highlights how various door configurations affect the level of constitutional protections granted to those situated on the inside of the door and the important role of vision for establishing legal expectations of privacy. Eventually, I suggest that we might be witnessing the twilight of the “physical door” era and the beginning of a “virtual door” era in Fourth Amendment jurisprudence. As recent physical and technological changes present increasingly sophisticated challenges to the distinctions between inside and outside, private and public, and prohibited and accepted visions, the Supreme Court will need to carefully articulate what is worth protecting on the other side of the door.

Basic methods of the designs of window and door frames and fillings in the history architecture of the city of Homiel (Gomel). The article describes the features characteristic of the architactural and artisctic – as well as structural – designs of the window and door assemblies and casings found in the heritage buildings (brick and timber) of civic architecture in Homiel (Gomel). It considers the main trends in restoring the structural elements of joinery items, as well as modern techniques of replacing those with non-traditional materials. Also there are some typical decorative features of wooden residential buildings.

This paper seeks to investigate architecture as a tool for the film director to achieve his cinematic goals. It begins with a brief snapshot of the forties (including film-technology); introduces Hearst on whose life Citizen Kane is an approximate character study; and discusses the various architectural elements under separate headings (viz. palace, window, door, ceiling, stairway, space and fireplace) as they are strategically employed in the film.

A door is not a door when it is closed. It is then wall made of a different material. A door is not a door when it is open. There is a gap in the wll, the ‘door’ is redundant. So when is a door a door?

При реставрации памятников архитектуры возникает ряд проблем, связанных с устройством заполнений оконных и дверных проемов как важных частей фасада, которые вступают между собой и с целым в те или иные соотношения, определяющие в конечном счете неповторимую индивидуальность каждого здания.

Carpentry door products have got a wide variety of solutions in the past centuries in Belarus. First of all they are classified in the following positions: location and function as well as basic elements. It is division according to the material for making, wholeness of the the shield, number of wings, way of opening, construction solutions. Detached criteria of the divergence is a decorative finishing of the door surface.

У дадзенай працы прадстаўлены вынікі даследвання шэрагу аб’ектаў сакральнай архітэктуры Падзвіння, якое было праведзена з мэтай выяўлення адметных архітэктурных рысаў ваконнага і дзвярнога запаўнення і аздаблення. На падставе аналізу сабраных матэрыялаў праводзіцца разгляд асобных спецыфічных узораў і агульных тэндэнцый, характэрных для рэгіёна.

This study is based on the analysis of materials gathered during field studies by the “Student Ethnographic Society”  National Youth Public Association, and identifies and describes the distinct architectural features of particular structural elements of a traditional popular dwelling, specifically doors and windows, as well as their regional and local distinctive characteristics.  It presents the main peculiarities of their design and ornament typical of the Dzvina basin region. The text provides a review of several most distinct and interesting examples of woodworking artefacts of that kind recorded in the area.

Essentielles à tout édifice, les portes, situées entre deux espaces distincts, constituent à la fois une séparation et une transition. Elles marquent les divisions structurelles nécessaires à l'articulation et la hiérarchisation de l'espace des lieux de culte. Prenant appui sur un corpus d'étude représentatif des églises monastiques érigées entre le Xe et le XVe siècle dans le territoire de l'empire byzantin et ses environs, cette thèse s'attache, par une étude holistique et pluridisciplinaire, à examiner les fonctions et les significations des lieux de passage et de leurs décors. Jalonnant les parcours effectués par les officiants et l'assistance vers l'église et en son sein, les portes et leurs abords sont le support privilégié de décors sculptés, en mosaïques ou peints. Les images et les signes graphiques qui les composent contiennent des messages divers et contribuent à appréhender les significations attribuées aux seuils dans la pensée chrétienne à Byzance. Les utilisations et les affectations des portes sont plurielles. Elles participent à la mise en scène des services liturgiques et à l'instauration d'un ordre social au sein de l'espace monastique. Ainsi les lieux de passage sont ceux d'expériences multiples. Le franchissement d'une porte s'inscrit dans un cheminement gradué conduisant l'assemblée vers la communion avec Dieu. Il produit une expérience spatiale, temporelle et spirituelle, mais aussi sensorielle et cognitive. Cette étude raisonnée des lieux liminaires des églises byzantines propose une nouvelle lecture du patrimoine architectural et iconographique, en mesure d'apporter un éclairage supplémentaire sur la vie et la spiritualité monastique, comme sur ses pratiques religieuses et sociales. Elle remet en question l'exclusivité de la perception verticale de l'espace religieux byzantin et réévalue les normes prédominantes de la compréhension et de l'appréciation des portes, telles que les notions d'entrée principale ou secondaire et de séparation entre le sacré et le profane.

Liminal Places and their Decoration in Byzantine Monastic Churches (10th-15th century): Function, Meaning and Experience of Doorways and Passageways

Essential to any building, doorways, i.e. the areas located between two distinct spaces, are both a separation and a transition. They mark the structural divisions necessary for the articulation and internal hierarchy of space in church buildings. Based on a representative selection of monastic churches located within the territory of the Byzantine Empire and its surroundings, dated from the 10th to the 15th century, this dissertation analyzes the function and the meaning of passageways and their decoration through a holistic and multidisciplinary approach. Punctuating the paths taken by officiants and the audience towards the church and within it, the doors and their surroundings are important settings for sculptures, mosaics or paintings. The images and graphic signs displayed on and around them convey a variety of messages and contribute to our understanding of the significance of thresholds in Byzantium. The use of doorways and the assignments given to them are many and various. They participate in the staging of liturgical services and in the establishment of a social order within the monastic space. Thus, they are the place of multiple experiences. The crossing of a doorway is part of a gradual itinerary leading the assembly towards communion with God. It produces a spatial, temporal and spiritual experience in addition to a multisensory and cognitive impact. This study of liminal places of Byzantine churches proposes an alternative reading of the architectural and iconographic heritage and attempts to shed new light on monastic life and spirituality, as well as its religious and social practices. It challenges the exclusive vertical perception of the Byzantine religious space and reconsiders the prevailing norms of understanding and appreciation of doorways, such as the notions of main or secondary entrances and the hermetic barrier between the sacred and the profane.

A skimmer for removing oil spilled on the surface of a body of water has a hull which is submersible in the water and a coupler on the nose of the hull for coupling the skimmer to a towing vehicle. A surge tank is located within the hull for receiving oil and water skimmed from the surface. A funnel positioned on top of the skimmer and extending though the hull has an inlet positioned in the spilled oil and an outlet extending into the surge tank. The inlet consists of a pivotable head that is held level with the surface of the liquid by an attached float. A conveyor within the funnel controls the flow of oil and water into the surge tank. A sensor at the funnel inlet controls a hydraulic jack located between the funnel and the hull to position the inlet in the oil on the water's surface. A conduit between the surge tank and a conduit coupler on the rear of the hull is used for pumping oil out of the surge tank and into an outside conduit. A pair of doors are hinged to the inlet end for either closing the funnel or for opening outward in a spread position to gather and channel the oil into the funnel. The doors can be joined to the ends of a floating fence so that oil confined within the fence is directed into the funnel as the skimmer and fence are pulled through the oil spill. 16 claims.
