Diotima of Mantinea

The figure and discourse of Diotima of Mantinea in Plato's Symposium had a decisive influence on the tradition of women's thought and, at the same time, in the foundation of an «occult» branch of philosophy: the Erotics, i.e. the philosophical consideration of love, sexuality, gender identity, interpersonal relationships and particularly relationships of philia such as friendship. Although the Erotics did not become established as one of the canonical subdivisions of the history of Western philosophy, numerous texts and theories demonstrate its existence from classical Greece to the present day. Diotima and other women philosophers make it clear that issues of the Erotics held a constant interest in the tradition of women's thought. Making the Erotics visible as a branch of philosophy situates the contributions of women thinkers in the philosophical canon, thereby transforming it. The «voice» of Diotima represents the beginnings of this tradition which, running throughout history, sets up a dialogue with other authors who have stressed philein rather than sophia, and enable us to reconsider for today's world the concept of the erotic itself, now much more circumscribed.

La figura i el parlament de Diotima de Mantinea en el Convit de Plató van tenir una influència decisiva en la tradició del pensament femení i, així mateix, en la fundació d'una branca «oculta» de la filosofia: l'Eròtica, és a dir, la reflexió filosòfica al voltant de l'amor, la sexualitat, la identitat de gènere, les relacions interpersonals i, en particular, les relacions de philia com ara l'amistat. Malgrat que l'Eròtica no es va consolidar com una de les subdisciplines canòniques en la història de la filosofia occidental, nombrosos textos i teories mostren la seva existència des de la Grècia antiga fins a l'actualitat. La mestra de Sòcrates i altres filòsofes fan patent que les qüestions d'Eròtica són un interès constant (però no ex-clusiu) en la tradició del pensament femení. Fer visible l'Eròtica com a branca de la filosofia situa les aportacions de les pensadores en el cànon filosòfic, transformant-lo. La «veu» de Diotima representa l'inici d'aquesta tradició que, recorrent la història, estableix un diàleg amb altres autores i autors que han posat més èmfasi en el philein que no pas en la sophia, i que ens ajuden a repensar avui dia el mateix concepte d'eròtica, molt més restringit.
