Digital Library Open Source Software : A Comparative Study

Managing large projects involving different groups of people and complex tasks can be challenging. The solution is to use Project management software, which allows a more efficient management of projects. However, famous project management systems can be costly and may require expensive custom servers. Even if free software is not as complex as Microsoft Project, is noteworthy to think that not all projects need all the features, amenities and power of such systems. There are free and open source software alternatives that meet the needs of most projects, and that allow Web access based on different platforms and locations. A starting stage in adopting an OSS in-house is finding and identifying existing open source solution. In this paper we present an overview of Open Source Project Management Software (OSPMS) based on articles, reviews, books and developers’ web sites, about those that seem to be the most popular software in this category.

The purpose of this paper is to provide an introduction to NewGenLib 3.0, as well as a case study which seeks to document the experiences of using NewGenlib3.0.
It provides description on technology used and the architecture of NewGenlib3.0 along with unique account of a library's experience as well as some evaluation by workshop participants

It is found that use of well designed system analysis along with well tested and widely supported OSS components and opens standards makes it a very user friendly and reliable Integrated Library Management software which can be easily implemented in a library without much technical hand or a rigorous training program. The open source development process facilitated the sharing and collaboration that made this rapid improvement possible.

In this paper, NewGenLib version 3.0.3 U5 has been tested and used, but 3.0.4 R1 released recently has not been tested.

Abstract—This paper undertake a focus group research approach to investigate the perceptions of LIS community towards open source software adoption in libraries of Oman. The motivation of the study comes as a result of E-Oman strategy to uplift the information and communication technology services in Oman. The focus group approached applied in this study was carried out by means of inviting participants from seven institutions in Oman, to participate in a workshop about OSS adoption in libraries. During the workshop, focus groups were established. After the workshop, each group participates in responding to their perception towards OSS adoption in libraries. The results of their responses were analyzed. It was discovered that there are lack of awareness and readiness toward adoption of open source software in libraries of Oman.
