The positive predictive value of transvaginal ultrasonography for the diagnosis of endometrioma and dermoid cysts was 96.4% and 97.1%, respectively. The false positive rates were 3.8% and 3.0%, respectively. Intracranial dermoid cysts are congenital, usually nonmalignant lesions with an incidence of 0.5% of all intracranial tumors. They tend to occur in the midline sellar, parasellar, or frontonasal regions. Although theirnature is benign, dermoid cysts have a high morbidity and mortality risk, especially when rupture occurs. A 40 year old woman presented with head injury after she experienced sudden loss of consciousness. She hada history of headache, loss of consciousness; her past medical history was not remarkable. Mature cystic teratomas, often referred to as dermoid cysts, are the most common germ cell tumors of the ovary. In the recent years, transvaginal sonographic diagnosis of ovarian dermoid cysts together with laparoscopic approach have greatly improved the treatment of this benign lesion. We retrospectively reviewed the outcome of laparoscopic surgery for suspected ovarian dermoid cysts. The preoperative findings, operative techniques and postoperative complications were retrospectively reviewed in women who underwent laparoscopic surgery for dermoid cysts, between January 2000 and May 2003. In 47 women aged 21 to 53 years (median, 38.8 years), 93.6% had a unilateral cyst with a diameter of 17 to 108 mm (median, 51 mm). Clinical presentations were pain (62%), abnormal vaginal bleeding (21%) and ovarian torsion (2%), whilst 17% were diagnosed incidentally during routine examination. To review the characteristics and determine treatment outcomes of pediatric dermoid cysts. Retrospective review of the presentation, diagnosis, treatment, and outcomes of all pediatric dermoid cysts of the head and neck examined between 1980 and 2002 at Mayo Clinic. Forty-nine patients (59% girls) had a dermoid cyst of the head and neck. The median age at diagnosis was 22 months. The most common presenting sign was a palpable mass, noted in 100% of patients. During evaluation, approximately 25 patients (51%) had imaging studies. The most common location of the cysts was periorbital (61%), followed by the neck (18%; including 1 submental cyst). Various surgical approaches were chosen. In 2 patients (4%), the dermoid cyst had an intracranial extension. Only 1 patient experienced recurrence. The median pathologic diameter of the cysts was 1.2 cm. Dermoid cysts are unusual neoplasms that often present in childhood, with the orbit being the area most commonly affected in the head and neck region. Imaging studies help rule out an intracranial or intraorbital extension. With complete excision, recurrence is unusual. Significance Our review will assist both primary care physicians and subspecialists in diagnosing and treating dermoid cysts.

Abstrac t Objective: A clinical study was conducted to evaluate the clinical features, treatment outcomes and to determine the incidence of complications in children with congenital neck lesions treated at our institution between 2002 and 2012 with a special emphasis on thyroglossal duct remnant, branchial cleft anomaly and dermoid cyst. Material and Methods: In this retrospective study, the diagnosis was made by physical examination, ultrasound in most and for a potential extension of the mass computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging in a few patients and confirmed by histopathological examination in all of the children. Results: There are 73 patients with congenital neck lesions in this series. Of the patients, 39 (53.4%) children have thyroglossal duct remnant. Many surgical techniques have been described to manage floor of mouth masses, but few studies have described the approach to these masses in children. This case series summarizes a single institution's experience with pediatric floor of mouth masses. We performed a retrospective chart review of all children who presented at our tertiary care facility with FOM masses between 2007 and 2012. Charts were reviewed for clinical presentation, preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative management. Thirteen cases were retrieved: 6 dermoid cysts, 4 ranulas, 1 lymphatic malformation, 1 imperforate submandibular duct, and 1 enlarged salivary gland. In 10 of 13 patients, clinical diagnosis was consistent with postoperative diagnosis. Imaging was consistent with postoperative diagnosis in 8 of 9 cases. A 6-month-old female spayed domestic shorthair cat was presented for evaluation of a focal subcutaneous swelling on the dorsal neck at the level of atlas. The magnetic resonance imaging and surgical treatment of a dermoid sinus associated with the cervical vertebrae is described. To the authors' knowledge, a dermoid sinus in this location has not been described previously in the cat. The prognosis following surgical resection appears favorable.

To evaluate the potential role of ECG-gated flow sensitive phase contrast cine magnetic resonance (MR) imaging in detecting the communication between cystic intracranial lesions and neighboring cerebrospinal fluid (CFS) spaces. Twenty one patients with intracranial cystic lesions (arachnoid cyst, 15; epidermoid cyst, 2; glioma, 1; dermoid cyst, 1; and mega cisterna magna, 2) underwent CSF flow studies in addition to the conventional MR sequences. MR imaging was performed with ECG gated two dimensional fast imaging steady-state precession sequence (2D-FISP). Using the cine images obtained per cardiac cycle, we tried to identify the communication between cysts or cyst-like structures and neighboring CSF spaces. Results were compared with intraoperative findings, computed tomography (CT) cisternography and scintigraphy. In 14 cystic lesions, no communication was identified.
