ABSTRACT Galactosemia, a metabolic disorder associated with the intolerance to dietary galactose due to an inherited enzymatic deficiency, is indicated by heightened levels of galactose in urine (galactosuria). In this report, capillary electrophoresis (CE) with laser-induced fluorescence detection was evaluated for its ability to screen urinary carbohydrates, particularly galactose. Neonatal urine samples with normal and abnormal levels of galactose were analyzed with galactose concentrations quantitated relative to urinary creatinine concentrations to account for variable urinary dilution. Analysis of nine samples by CE in a single-blind manner defined four as negative (normal) and five as positive for galactosuria with galactose levels as high as 146.8 +/- 5.9 mM. Galactosuria was correlated with clinical galactosemia diagnoses for four of the positive samples, while the remaining positive was associated with a patient diagnosed with Hurler's syndrome.

A novel, rapid and simple reverse-phase high performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) method for the simultaneous determination of three pesticides – mancozeb, azoxystrobin and difenoconazole by derivatization with ethyl iodide is presented.

A fatty acids methyl esters (FAME's) analysis stand ardization was made by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), using ele ctronic (EI) and chemical ionization (CI). Accuracy, linearity, detection and quantification limit, sensibility and correlation coefficient were evaluated as statistic al parameters. Results showed that the EI analysis exhibits satisfactory statistical values for identification and quantification of FAME's. However, FAME's mass spectra have + + ) 1 (M as a molecular ion and don't have common ions; for this reason the FAME's identi fication through CI is easier. The real sample was chrysalises' Bombix mori Linn sobtained from Hybrid Pilamo 1 chrysalises growth in the coffee growing region of Colombia. The oil showed both oleic and palmitic acids as main components (43,752 y 26, 300% respectively).

The search for novel antitrypanosomals and the investigation into their mode of action remain crucial due to the toxicity and resistance of commercially available antitrypanosomal drugs. In this study, two novel antitrypanosomals, tortodofuordioxamide (compound 2) and tortodofuorpyramide (compound 3), were chemically derived from the natural N-alkylamide tortozanthoxylamide (compound 1) through structural modification. The chemical structures of these compounds were confirmed through spectrometric and spectroscopic analysis, and their in vitro efficacy and possible mechanisms of action were, subsequently, investigated in Trypanosoma brucei (T. brucei), one of the causative species of African trypanosomiasis (AT). A new multi-residue method for the analysis of sulfonamides (sulfadiazine, sulfamerazine, sulfamethazine, sulfaguanidine and sulfamethoxazole) in non-target feeds using high-performance liquid chromatography-fluorescence detection (HPLC-FLD) and precolumnderivatization was developed and validated. Sulfonamides (SAs) were extracted from feed with an ethyl acetate/methanol/acetonitrile mixture. Clean-up was performed on a Strata-SCX cartridge. The HPLC separation was performed on a Zorbax Eclipse XDB C18 column with a gradient mobile phase system of acetic acid, methanol, and acetonitrile. The method was validated according to EU requirements (Commission Decision 2002/657/EC). Linearity, decision limit, detection capability, detection and quantification limits, recovery, precision, and selectivity were determined, and adequate results were obtained.
