Demolition Waste

Demolition of old structures to make way for new and modern ones are common features inmetropolitan areas due to rapid urbanization. However, very little demolished concrete is recycled or reused. The strict environmental laws and lack of dumping sites in urban areas, on one hand, are makingthe disposal of demolition wastes problematic while, on the other hand, the quarrying of raw materials is becoming dif icult. The present work presents the results of experimental investigations carried out toevaluate the effect of partial replacement of cement, fine aggregate and coarse aggregate by dif erent partsof demolished wastes on strength and workability of concrete made. For the study, design mix concrete ofgrade M-30 was prepared using IS 10262-2009. Thereafter, the replacement of dif erent constituents ofconcrete, one at a time was carried out by replacing these with the dif erent sieved fractions of crusheddemolition waste. The compressive strength at 7, 14 and 28 days and workability in terms of slump valuewere measured. The compressive strength of these mixes was measured on 150mm cubes. Test resultsshow that the behavior of recycled waste concrete The compressive strength of recycled concrete with 0%, 20% 25% and 30% coarse aggregate replacement by demolition waste coarse aggregate at 7,14 and28 days is comparable to that of referral concrete. The compressive strength of recycled concrete madeusing 5% of demolition waste coarse aggregate is almostsimilar to referral concrete. Further, the resultsindicate that still higher replacement of the constituent materials is possible without much compromisingthe 28 days strength and workability

The main objective of our project lies in find a perfect solution for the diminishing resources of cement, fine and course aggregates. Our ideology was adding metakaolin, foundry sand and demolition waste to the concrete and studying the strength properties of concrete with the variation in nominal mix. i.e., to study the strength properties of concrete (M20 Grade) for mix ratio of 5%,10%,15%,20% and 25% at 7 and 28 days. The strength properties being studied in our theses are as follows: 1. Compressive strength 2. Split Tensile strength 3. Flexural strength These properties were then compared with the nominal concrete mix.

Construction and demolition waste treatment has become an increasingly pressing economic, social, and environmental concern across the world. This study employs a science mapping approach to provide a thorough and systematic examination of the literature on waste management research. This study identifies the most significant journals, authors, publications, keywords, and active countries using bibliometric and scientometric analysis. The search retrieved 895 publications from the Scopus database between 2001 and 2021. The findings reveal that the annual number of publications has risen from less than 15 in 2006 to more than 100 in 2020 and 2021. The results declare that the papers originated in 80 countries and were published in 213 journals. Abstract The intense rate of construction and demolition waste generation (CDW) over the years should boost recycling. The use of CDW as constituents of cementitious composites has been considered a feasible alternative to dumping. This paper presents a study of the behaviour of cementitious renderings incorporating very fine recycled aggregates from two types of CDW. Only particles of recycled aggregates below 0.149 mm were used as filler, hereinafter referred as recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) and mixed recycled aggregate (MRA). The incorporation’ percentages used were 0%, 10%, 15% and 20% of natural aggregates’ volume. Several tests have been carried out, in order to evaluate the mortars in terms of mechanical strength, workability, water absorption, dimensional instability and water vapour permeability. The experimental programme consisted in three consecutive phases, in which the mortars that presented the best performances were selected for a deeper analysis of their features. The test results showed that modified mortars had a better behaviour in most of tests compared with the reference mortar (with no CDW). Mortars with incorporation of 20% of RCA and 15% of MRA presented the best performance.

Demolition activity plays an important role in the total energy consumption of the construction industry in the European Union. The indiscriminate use of non-renewable raw materials, energy consumption, and unsustainable design has led to a redefinition of the criteria to ensure environmental protection. This article introduces an experimental plan that determines the viability of a new type of construction material, obtained from crushed brick waste, to be introduced into the construction market. The potential of crushed brick waste as a raw material in the production of building precast products, obtained by curing a geopolymeric blend at 60 °C for 3 days, has been exploited. The modernization and up gradation of human habitat often results in new construction as well as the generation of construction and demolition (C and D) waste. The efficient management of C and D waste has become the main area of concern for the policy makers due to increasing quantum of C and D waste generation. Various research studies have investigated C and D waste from the viewpoint of demolition methodology, treatment technologies, and tools and techniques for reduction of C and D waste. Although, there is a need for integration of these different viewpoints and holistic understanding of policy efforts towards the management of C and D from a sustainability perspective. Construction and Demolition Waste (CDW) is a deep concern for most developing countries with a harmful impact on the environment, society, and economy. This study attempts to offer insights into the management practices of CDW and to identify several barriers that hinder the future management of CDW in Malaysia. The data collection approach includes a thorough review of all CDW related academic papers, official reports and statistics, and government legislations. This study also includes the issues and challenges of sustainable management of CDW in Malaysia with the aim of demonstrating the current challenges related to sustainability of CDW. The findings of this study will contribute substantial evidences to both academicians and practitioners towards better management and planning of policies for CDW.
