Children's Nursing

The aim of this project, as set by DHSSPS, was to undertake a review of nursing services in order to ensure that they are facilitated to fully support and respond to children with complex needs and their families, and for them to work in partnership with other professions and agencies. However this review needed to take into account the wider service context and commissioning frameworks. The project commenced in November 2006. In addition to reviewing the international literature, information was gathered from 30 parents, nearly 200 frontline professionals and 30 service managers. Throughout the project, participants repeatedly demonstrated an interest and enthusiasm to produce more efficient and effective service responses to an estimated 500 children and families in Northern Ireland which to date has been ad hoc and often uncoordinated. Many inequities exist in provision across Northern Ireland. Yet individual packages can be a high expense to HPSS. A series of recommendations have been developed which command a consensus among informants.

This paper reports on the development of a new initiative, field visit placements towards and integrated and community approach to learning for nursing students. To date, limited literature exists on the potential of community field visits as meaningful learning opportunities for nursing students. Drawing on our experiences, the structure and processes involved in implementing field visits are described in this paper. Students evaluated the field visits positively indicating that they provided a wealth of learning opportunities that enhanced their knowledge and awareness of services available to children and their families in the community. The potential of field visits to promote an integrated and community approach to placements in children's nursing is discussed.

Latar belakang: Perkembangan kesehatan anak sangat dipengaruhi oleh interaksi orang tua-anak dan keterikatan orang tua-anak. Usia 0-24 bulan merupakan periode yang menentukan kualitas kehidupan sehingga disebut dengan golden period. Faktor yang mempengaruhi kualitas interaksi pengasuh (Caregiver) dengan anak dapat berasal dari pengasuh maupun anak, salah satunya adalah pendapatan pengasuh. Tujuan: Mengetahui hubungan pendapatan pengasuh dengan kualitas interaksi pengasuh dan anak stunting usia 6-23 bulan. Metode: Penelitian ini merupakan rancangan cross sectional. Subjek penelitian adalah pengasuh dengan anak stunting usia 6-23 bulan. Subjek penelitian direkrut dengan menggunakan tekhnik Consecutive sampling. Instrumen yang digunakan yaitu lembar observasi Parenting Interaction with Children: Checklist of Observation Linked to Outcome (PICCOLO). Analisis data dilakukan dengan uji Chi square. Hasil: Terdapat hubungan yang bermakna antara pendapatan pengasuh (0,001) dengan kualitas interaksi pengasuh dengan anak stunting usia 6-23 bulan. Saran: Pengasuh diharapkan mampu meningkatkan pengajaran seperti stimulasi kognitif dan bahasa, serta meningkatkan kemampuan bereaksi seperti respon yang cepat dan tanggap terhadap isyarat anak sehingga dapat meningkatkan kualitas interaksi pengasuh dengan anak.


ABSTRACT
Background: Child health development is strongly influenced by parent-child interactions and parent-child attachments. 0-24 months is a period that determines the quality of life so called the golden period. Factors that influence the quality of caregiver interactions can come from caregivers or children, one of which is caregivers income. Objective: To determine related caregiver's income to the quality of caregiver interaction with stunting children in 6-23 months of aged. Method: This study is a cross sectional design. Research subjects were caregivers with stunting children in 6-23 months of age. Research subjects were recruited using Consecutive sampling techniques. The instruments used were Parenting Interaction with Children observation sheets: Checklist of Observation Linked to Outcome (PICCOLO). Data analysis was done by Chi square test. Results: There was a significant relationship between caregiver's income (0.001) with the quality of caregiver interaction with stunting children in 6-23 months of age. Suggestion: Caregivers are expected to be able to improve teaching such as cognitive and language stimulation, as well as improve the ability to react such as rapid response and responsiveness to children's cues so as to improve the quality of caregiver interactions with children.

In May 1918, the Sydenham Infant Welfare Centre in south-east London hired a new senior nurse, Eva Grace Thompson. With fourteen years’ experience in the profession and a certificate from University College Hospital, and having worked in both children’s and adult hospitals, she seemed ideal for this demanding post at a residential paediatric institution. Within a few days of her arrival, however, a disturbing pattern of patient injuries appeared. Initially, these were assumed to be accidents. When one of the children died, however, a post-mortem revealed that the injuries had been caused deliberately. Investigations revealed not only that Thompson had been accused previously of harming child patients, butthat she had suffered from drug addiction for several years. Convicted of murder at the Old Bailey, Thompson was found ‘guilty but insane’ and her crimes were unanimously blamed on drugs. Surprisingly, Thompson then essentially vanished from public memory, despite the interwar anxieties surrounding both the professionalization of nursing and a supposed rise in drug addiction and related crimes. As I demonstrate here, a crucial reason for this ‘deliberate forgetting’ of the Thompson case was the near-obsession with ‘character’ in nursing during the early twentieth century.

This chapter describes the development of the respiratory system from normal embryonic, fetal and infant development up to adult status. It includes the development of structures such as airways, rib cage and diaphragm as well as physilogical changes .There are clincal notes on chronic lung disease, Robin sequence, and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.
