הספר כתוב מתוך גישה ביקורתית — אך מכבדת. המחבר מבקש לשלול את דימוי החרדים כגוש אחיד וסגור ולהראות שיש בו גוונים ואף מצביע על הגורמים השונים שמתוכם נוצרו גוונים אלה, בין הרוחניים ובין הארציים. המחבר מבסס את טענותיו על נתונים ועל מחקרים מעמיקים, ועם זאת ספרו מנוסח בשפה קולחת ושווה לכל נפש, שאינה מחייבת את קוראיו בידע מחקרי קודם. הוא מבקש לתת תמונה מקיפה, יסודית ומועילה.

This essay traces R. Shneur Zalman of Liadi's use of Rambam's (Maimonides) complex and contradictory Doctrine of Divine Cognition, a concept originally sourced in Aristotle. In his classic formulation of the Doctrine Rambam paradoxically writes that although Divine Cognition appears to be a complex intradivine process, in fact, "all is one" meaning, cognition adds no complexity to the Divine. As we trace R. Shneur Zalman's use of the Doctrine, we see it re-read to ground myth and mysticism, ultimately supporting the assertion that "all is One" the metaphysical claim that only One substance exists. Rambam's doctrine becomes a linchpin for R. Shneur Zalman's monism-and many of his most central doctrines.

Megaleh Temirin (Revealer of Secrets), first published in Vienna in 1819, is one of the sharpest and wittiest pieces of Jewish literature written in the first half of the nineteenth century, and is perhaps the most important piece of Hebrew prose composed before the stories of Mendele Mocher Seforim. A sly and complex story deriding Hasidism and Hasidim, it is told through the correspondence between the beadles of Hasidic courts and contemporary rabbis, and it presents a dark picture of  avaricious frauds and swindlers whose main concern was control over territory and the souls of believers, a goal achieved by beguiling the authorities and attacking all opponents. Perl lends his book a ‘Hasidic’ feel both in its physical design and in its language, presenting a Maskilic version of In Praise of the Ba’al Shem Tov that lays Hasidism bare so that no reader will ever be able to look at that, or any other Hasidic book, in the same way again. In addition to the book’s satiric sting, which would have been enough to bring its readers a dual pleasure, Perl’s hints at contemporary people and places, hidden within anagrams and numerological tricks. With the unraveling of these clues, which also include the use of actual Hasidic sources, the book is a valuable, contemporary view of historical reality. A meticulous reading of the book may therefore open a window on the hidden worlds of Hasidism and the Haskalah at the start of the nineteenth century.


The first volume (Imagined Hasidism) serves as an introduction to the complex satirical writings of Josef Perl of Tarnopol (1773-1839). At the center of the book stands an analysis of the satires, Megaleh Temirin (1819) and Bochen Tzadik (1838), including a systematic treatment of the ‘characters’ in the central works and a discussion of the dozens of manuscripts to be found in the Perl Archive in Jerusalem. Perl’s writings are analyzed here in the fuller context of Hebrew and Yiddish literature in general and Maskilic and Hasidic literature in particular, as well as other polemical writings and governmental records critical of Hasidism. The study thus presents a complex and nuanced picture of the relationship between literature and history, between the anti-Hasidic reports and the more complicated historical reality, and lays the groundwork for further research into the genre of nineteenth-century Maskilic satire.

The second and third volumes (Megaleh Temirin) present for the first time an annotated edition of Megaleh Temirin. It is based on the first edition and the scattered manuscripts and it includes a comparison to its Yiddish translation. The book is accompanied by appendices on its origins and contents, including fundamental treatments of several passages: an explication of the encoded names, the Hasidic sources used by the author, and the variants found in the manuscripts and in the only edition of the book in Yiddish.

The editor of the book, Professor Jonatan Meir, teaches in the Goldstein-Goren Department of Jewish Thought at Ben-Gurion University. He has published several articles on the Haskalah of Eastern Europe, Hasidism, and a number of varied topics in twentieth-century Kabbalah.

A late Habad text attributed to Rabbi Yosef Yitshak Schneerson speaks of the Maskilim in the following way: "All the Maskilic writers, their students, and their students' students take every chance to disparage the honor of Hasidism and its princes (that is, Habad) and to belittle the value of their service to the ethical and financial good of the Jewish people."  Even though some Maskilim did see Habad as a particularly dangerous form of Hasidism, it is hard to accept the impression left by Habad historiography that the Maskilim saw only the negative elements of Habad -- in fact they presented the group in a decidedly and uniquely positive light -- even if their own motives in doing so were clear. The portrayal of Habad in Maskilic literature is important on three counts: first, because these images commanded a central place within the self-consciousness of Maskilim over different periods; second, because the Hasidic movement itself adopted certain elements of those Maskilic portrayals; and third, because these portrayals influenced -- and continue to influence -- scholarly understandings of Hasidism. The Article presents a few of those images who frequently appear throughout the nineteenth century.

The study explores how the meshichistim (messianics) among the Jewish ultra-orthodox Chabad (Lubavitch) Hasidim manage the rupture entailed by the death of their leader, the Rebbe, whom they uphold as the King Messiah. Based on ethnographic research of contemporary pilgrimage to the Rebbe’s court in Brooklyn, whose rituals and pedagogical framework are constructed by the meshichistim, the
study problematizes the functional assumptions and implications of the rich literature on failed
prophecies in millenarian movements, a literature heavily influenced by the theoretical model of cognitive dissonance. The case of Chabad meshichistim suggests that a millenarian group can reinvent itself through multifaceted cultural, pedagogical and ritual endeavors that are rife with internal
contradictions. Moreover, these endeavors reveal that the rupture has not been balanced, regularized or
normalized, but rather expresses the continuous complexity of life in its shadow.

How I convince my then editor at the Forward to publish a review of a book not yet translated into English is a ,long story. Let's just say that the few examples of the rich material in this amazingly original (and quite damning) work of serious scholarship, largely about Mystics Gone Mad, or Hilarious Hasidic History, she said, WHEN CAN YOU GET IT TO ME ?

These are amazing stories. 

And yet, this is a work of formidable scholarship !

Unlike "Shivkhey ha-Besht" and that massive literature of "Rebbeshi Nisim ve-nifloes" collected  by Berger in his 4 volume anthology, to say nothing of the tales of Buber and Wiesel, this strange stuff really happened.

The Philosophy Chabad-Lubavitch is a philosophy, a movement, and an organization. It is considered to be the most dynamic force in Jewish life today. Lubavitch appropriately means the " city of brotherly love " The word " Chabad " is a Hebrew acronym for the three intellectual faculties of chochmah—wisdom, binah—comprehension and da'at—knowledge.

The yahrzeit of a Hasidic rebbe-far from being a day devoted to mourning the dead-is a bona fide yontef. It is marked by feasting, singing and dancing, testifying to the supreme confidence of Hasidim that their departed leader is still actively interceding on their behalf in the heavens. There is an assumption in the title of this paper that begs the following ques tion: Was there in fact a signifIcant and sustained "Rambam Revival" in the modern period? The very notion of a modern Jewish Maimonidean renais sance implies that there had been an extended historical period during which Maimonides was not of widespread interest and his works not studied in the Jewish world, a deficiency that was subsequently addressed and remedied by this alleged "Rambam revival." In evaluating the history of the reception of Maimonides from the period immediately following his death, through to the early modern period with which we are presently concerned, a fundamental distinction must first

«Chasids of Belarus in the eyes of the police in the Russian Empire in the first third of the XIX century: the case of Berka Schneier».
The subject of the article is the history of interaction between the leaders of the Chasidic community of Belarus and the governing bodies of the Russian Empire  in the first third of the 19th century, on the background of the reforms carried out by the second Lubavich Rebbe DovBer, and the conflict within the local Jewish society. One of the major controversial issues was the funding structure for rabbis and their families. Echoes of the conflict persist in the Chabad Lubavitch tradition to this day in the form of a legend about the trial of the Rabbi DovBer in 1826 on false charges. The National Historical Archives of Belarus contain an archival file withdocuments of this particular litigation, which allows a 55 deeper insight into both the process of the formation of a tradition and the complex internal processes in the Jewish society of Belarus in those years.
