CHILDES

The use of diminutives is a distinguishing characteristic of Child Directed Speech (CDS), and has been studied across many languages, most notably in Dutch and Russian. Linguists Patricia Brooks and Vera Kempe define diminutives as “derivational affixes used to modify word forms to express smallness, intimacy, and endearment” (Brooks & Kempe, 2012). In my research project, I continued their definition of diminutives as being both grammatically correct and incorrect words with American English suffixes, including –ie, -y, -ish, and -ling, that are characteristic of CDS, and would not normally be seen in Adult Directed Speech (ADS). Past studies have shown that the purpose of diminutives “serves to increase the availability of word segmentation cues” (Jusczyk, 1997, Echols, Crowhurst and Childres, 1997) and “to facilitate the acquisition of inflection” (Savickniene and Dressler, 2007).

This paper describes a coding scheme and a set of semi-automatic procedures for the annotation of complex noun phrases and their morpho-syntactic properties in child language data. These tools are based on the CHAT conventions of the Child Language Data Exchange System (MacWhinney 2000; CHILDES: http://childes.psy.cmu.edu/; CHAT: http://childes.psy.cmu.edu/manuals/chat.pdf). The coding scheme presented here focuses on the order and grammatical category of the individual elements in the noun phrase and their gender, number and case marking. It also provides information about the category and lexical identity of the element that assigns case to the respective noun phrase (e.g. the dative preposition mit ‘with’). The coding scheme was developed for German child language, but it can be adapted to other languages and populations.

In this study, we discuss the term child-invented form proposed by MacWhinney (2000 [1991]) for the CHAT transcription format and approached by Secco (1994) and Baia (2010). After analyzing data from a case study of a child (M.) acquiring Brazilian Portuguese as his first language from 10 months to 2 years, we observe that what Secco (1994) and Baia (2010) consider as a child-invented form should be explained as the manifestation of a phonological routine, i.e. template, and/or isolated phonological process.

RESUMO Neste estudo, discutimos o termo " criação lexical " proposto por MacWhinney (1991, 2000) para o formato de transcrição CHAT, abordado no trabalho de Secco (1994) e Baia (2010). Após análise dos dados de um estudo de caso de uma criança (M.) adquirindo o português brasileiro, de 9 meses a 2 anos, observamos que o que Secco (1994) e Baia (2010) consideram criações lexicais pode ser explicado como manifestação de alguma rotina fonológica, i.e. template, e/ou processo fonológico isolado.

Recent studies on the development of pragmatic competence suggest that preschool children are often insensitive to conversational implicatures when they interpret scalar terms (Noveck 2001, Papafragou and Musolino 2003, Musolino 2004, Foppolo et. al 2012). However, there have been no previous naturalistic, longitudinal studies to date. I remedied the lack of this data on the acquisition of scalar implicatures by analyzing 1,186 productions of some in the spontaneous speech of one child and his parents across 32 months of development, from 2;4.24 to 5;0.11 years of age. First, I conducted quantitative research in which I examined non-pragmatic (determiner) and pragmatically enriched (quantifier) production types of the token some and the frequency of its co-occurrence with of, more, and have in both child speech and parental input. The data show (a) the child is sensitive to scalar implicatures as early as 2;5.29 and produces his own scalar implicatures as early as 2;8.29, (b) the greatest total number of tokens occurs when the child is learning the polysemous meanings of some; once the child has mastered this polysemy, his overall token production decreases with age, (c) the child's pragmatically enriched usage rate is positively correlated with age, and (d) a significant main effect in child speech with frequency in the parental input, at least in the early stages of production. Second, I verified these findings with a qualitative analysis of selected samples in context and further nuanced the course of development, adding an intermediary stage in which the child’s quantifier production cannot yet be classified as scalar, but polar, in which only two binary values exist on the scale. The implications of these findings for pragmatic delay are discussed, and a hybrid theory by which acquisition occurs in a step-wise process is offered as an alternative.

In this document, we describe the transcription conventions for the Eisenbeiss German child language corpora.1 These conventions are based on the so-called CHAT transcription conventions of the Child Language Data Exchange System (MacWhinney 2000; CHILDES: http://childes.psy.cmu.edu/; CHAT: http://childes.psy.cmu.edu/manuals/chat.pdf). We have incorporated modifications and additions of CHAT for German that were suggested by Stephany and Bast (1999; http://childes.psy.cmu.edu/intro/stephany.pdf) and by Heike Behrens (2006; pc.; http://childes.psy.cmu.edu/manuals/07germanic.doc#_Ref131136188).

Andere wollen Spracherwerbsdaten genauer betrachten und analysieren, z.B. für Hausarbeiten oder für Studien und Präsentationen in Schule, Studium oder Beruf. Und natürlich gibt es auch viele Menschen im Bildungsbereich, die Unterricht zum Thema “Spracherwerb” geben und dafür Beispiele und Übungsaufgaben brauchen.

Die Spracherwerbsdaten, die man benötigt, um diese unterschiedlichen Wünsche und Bedürfnisse zu erfüllen, findet man in der internationalen CHILDES-Datenbank für Kindersprachdaten. Wer möchte, kann Spracherwerbsdaten auf der Webseite anschauen, kostenlos herunterladen oder sie mit den ebenfalls kostenlosen CLAN-Tools der CHILDES-Datenbank genauer analysieren. In der Spracherwerbsforschung wird die CHILDES-Datenbank viel verwendet. Dies erkennt man an den zahlreichen Veröffentlichungen und Dankesbriefen an das CHILDES-Team.

In der breiten Öffentlichkeit, in Schulen und in Einführungskursen an der Universität wird CHILDES im deutschsprachigen Raum leider immer noch zu wenig genutzt. Dies liegt u.a. an der mangelnden Bekanntheit von CHILDES und am Fehlen von detaillierten deutschsprachigen Anleitungen für die Datenbanknutzung. Dieser Blogbeitrag soll Abhilfe schaffen. Er ist der erste Teil einer vierteiligen Einführung in CHILDES mit den folgenden Themen:
