Bruce Nauman and Participation

Viewers of contemporary art are often invited to involve themselves actively in artworks, by entering installations, touching objects, performing instructions or clicking on interactive websites. Why have artists sought to engage spectators in these new forms of participation? In what ways does active participation affect the viewer's experience and the status of the artwork? Spanning a range of practices including kinetic art, happenings, environments, performance, installations, relational and new media art from the 1950s to the present, this critical anthology sheds light on the history and specificity of artworks that only come to life when you - the viewer - are invited to 'do it yourself.' Rather than a specialist topic in the history of twentieth- and twenty-first century art, the 'do-it-yourself' artwork raises broader issues concerning the role of the viewer in art, the status of the artwork and the socio-political relations between art and its contexts.

Ever since the emergence of the avant-garde in the 19th century, artists have taken creative risks, explored unknown territories, thrust us out of our comfort zones, and upset the status quo. No American artist, however, has used a more wildly eclectic range of methods, materials, images, and ideas than Bruce Nauman to answer the question, "Can this, too, be art?" His will to experiment has earned him ardent admirers from the get-go and, I suspect, just as many detractors.

El presente trabajo trata sobre la obra del
artista americano Bruce Nauman y su íntima
relación con la fenomenología. Para manifestar
esa relación, hemos elegido tomar a una de sus
obras como hilo conductor: Pasillo grabado en
vídeo en directo de 1970. Trataremos, en
primer lugar, de los montajes de pasillos o
similares en la obra de Bruce Nauman. A
continuación, recapitularemos ciertos temas,
relacionados con la fenomenología, y
recurrentes en su variopinta producción. Por
último, emprenderemos una reflexión general
sobre el estatuto ontológico de la obra de arte
en el caso de los montajes y, en especial, del
montaje del pasillo grabado en directo,
preguntándonos pues qué es y dónde se
encuentra, en dicho caso, la obra de arte.

Counter-bodyness: Bruce Nauman and
phenomenology
Abstract
This paper deals with the work of the american
artist Bruce Nauman, and its close relation to
phenomenology. In order to exhibit this
relation, we have chosen one of his works as a
sort of common thread: Lived-Taped Video
Corridor from 1970. We will first discuss
some corridor montages or similar within
Bruce Nauman’s work. We will then focus on
some recurring topics of his diverse production
which happen to be closely related to
phenomenology. Finally, we will undertake a
general reflection on the ontological status of
an art piece such as a montage and, more
specifically, that of the above mentioned
“Lived-Taped Video Corridor”. We shall then
reach issues such as what is, in this very case,
the art piece, and where and when does it
occur.

This article examines the films and videos made by Bruce Nauman between 1965 and 1970, framing its discussion of these works in the context of the critical debates on Minimalism and its associated viewing practices. It offers formal analyses of a selection of Nauman’s early films and videos, comparing their effects with those produced by studying Minimalist sculpture in the round. It suggests that Nauman used a variety of techniques to establish a reflexive relationship between his on-screen depiction and the viewer which echoes the relationship between a Minimalist sculpture and the viewer. By exploring how sculptural concerns are manifested in and by Nauman’s early films and videos, the article presents new discussions of this area of his practice while enriching our understanding of the ways in which a regime of concerns associated with a particular medium can persist after what is arguably the reductive moment of modernist medium specificity.

Quisiéramos presentar algunos aspectos de la obra de Bruce Nauman y mostrar su original relación con la fenomenología, filosofía que ha atravesado todo el siglo XX y sigue, a día de hoy, gozando de vigencia y vigor. Bruce Nauman (Fort Wayne, Indiana, 1941) atraviesa y combina varias prácticas artísticas: desde la performance, y el vídeo, a la escultura y la instalación. Todas ellas ofrecen una determinada revelación al precio de una cierta agresión al espectador. En la obra de Nauman abundan los recorridos laberínticos, claustrofóbicos, las situaciones de vigilancia y de sobrecarga sensorial, las cacofonías, las repeticiones, los contratiempos arrítmicos, los espacios inhóspitos, con formas e iluminaciones profundamente disfuncionales. Instalaciones que el espectador se ve abocado a asumir, a encajar, quiéralo o no, a contracuerpo.

Pero ¿qué relación guarda todo ello con la fenomenología? Si la fenomenología busca revelar las estructuras básicas – limítrofes – de la experiencia mediante suspensión y variación eidética, Nauman obra, con sus instalaciones, un tipo de epojé y variación sui generis que procede a toda una serie de desplazamientos, diferimientos y hetero-localizaciones. Las instalaciones, aun tomando un camino distinto al estrictamente fenomenológico, constituyen potentes dispositivos de revelación de los límites y estructuras del humano vivir. Apostamos pues por interpretar la obra de Nauman desde su íntima relación – más o menos consciente, fructífera en todo caso – con la fenomenología. Lo hacemos en la prolongación de otros proyectos acometidos por Brumaria que se han hecho eco de la perspectiva fenomenológica y le han dado voz en sus colecciones. Nos referimos, señaladamente, a la obra, imponente, de Marc Richir, de quien Brumaria ha publicado dos importantes obras (La contingencia del déspota, 2014. El cuerpo, 2015). Insistiremos en la relevancia de la distinción fenomenológica entre cuerpo vivo (Leib) y cuerpo objetivo (Körper). Como veremos, en torno a esta distinción y sus múltiples declinaciones, exacerbadas en la obra de Bruce Nauman, se juegan temáticas esenciales al arte e incluso a la política

Resumen
El presente trabajo elabora un análisis
fenomenológico de la obra de Bruce Nauman
“Pasillo grabado en directo (1970)” prestando
especial atención al modo en que Nauman,
gracias a ciertos desplazamientos perceptivos
propios de la instalación, revela determinados
límites de la experiencia que la fenomenología
trata también de poner en claro. Se prestará
especial atención a la relación entre lo real y lo
virtual y al juego, dentro de la obra de
Nauman, entre algunos elementos de la
fenomenología husserliana de la imaginación,
como la Bildding, el Bildsujet o el Bildobjekt.

Bruce Nauman and Phenomenology (II).

Abstract
The present paper carries out a
phenomenological analysis of Bruce Nauman’s
1970 work “Live-Taped Video Corridor”
focusing on the manner in which Nauman
unveils, throughout some perceptual shifts
brought on by his installations, certain limits of
experience which Phenomenology also intends
to come to grips with. Special attention will be
paid to the relation between ‘real’ and ‘virtual’
as well as to the interplay, as found in
Nauman’s work, between some basic elements
from the Husserlian phenomenology of
imagination, namely Bildding,
Bildsujet and Bildobjekt.
